Magicplan allows you to connect a Bluetooth laser and quickly tighten up your measurements to 100%... it's designed to work really well for contractors, estimators, insurance adjusters, etc. As well, you can drop notes, standard images, and 360 panoramic images into rooms. One great thing for contractors is that you can quickly drop line itemed services in and build accurate quotes on the spot using the area, etc. info pulled directly from the floor plan.

For an Architect, do you recommend iPad 12.9 or iPad 11 inch?
@DavidTomic3 жыл бұрын
I have the 11 inch as an architect and it's perfect. 12.9 is just too big for all day site meetings, basically a laptop at that size

Hey David -thanks for this mate, great video. I don’t think the Scaniverse AR thing is gimmicky. It’s probably not all that helpful to an architect’s workflow, but i can imagine how handy it will be for decorating interiors or some task where you want to scan an object and place it in a room or next to another object that’s elsewhere for a visual comparisson.

Hi David, Great Video! I'm wondering if any of the three apps are good for commercial application, since commercial retail area are usually bigger with higher ceiling level with open ceiling style.
@DavidTomic3 жыл бұрын
Not really because lidar tops out at about 5m, the closer you can get the better the results.
@ethanwang35103 жыл бұрын
@@DavidTomic I see, so for retail space that has ceiling level 15ft and lower it’s fine, the accuracy will drop down for anything higher. Does the square footage matter, for instance for a 10000sf plus space, does it just take longer to measure up, but the accuracy is there?

Have you re-visited any of these apps? Tried soooooooooo many and they are all pretty bad. Was hoping to get more out of the lidar function of this ipad, but it seems the software to use the lidar is all still in its infancy.

From memory it was exported as a pretty typical file type so you should be able too. Maybe not as an actual point cloud but as an object as a minimum

They can be exported as FBX which can be imported into twinmotion today. Archicad 27 which isn’t out yet will support FBX import.

To be fair to Magicplan (which I have used but am not associated with in any way), you didn't seem to be using it correctly from what I could see in your video. Also, so far as accuracy is concerned, it allows you to bluetooth in measurements from a laser measure, so you can get the overall shape by scanning and then update with laser measurements. See 'LiDAR Scanning a Fully Furnished Apartment on an iPhone 12 Pro' for usage example from Magicplan. I'm not an architect so have no comment on applicability for that purpose. Thanks for the video!
@DavidTomic2 жыл бұрын
Valid comments, Bluetooth adapter kind of defeats the purpose of the built in lidar though.

Can you resale polycam measurements if you were able to take 1 actual measurement on site? So you can hopefully get more accurate measurements other than the actual measurement taken?
@DavidTomic3 жыл бұрын
Not to my knowledge, no.
@LiDAR3D3 жыл бұрын
You can rescale a polycam 3D model in a CAD tool such as Blender. But there scale is accurate so there is not need for that. The things to look out for is drifts and distortions that are prone to happen in areas with reflective surfaces such as tiles and mirrors

What about a full house measure up? Not just a room? Quicker to just use a laser. Tech is not there yet.
@LiDAR3D3 жыл бұрын
The LiDAR scanner is much faster than using a laser. We tested this by letting a floor planner pro compete with a first time lidar user. Even if you have years of experience in floor planning there is no way that anyone can measure more accurately and faster than a LiDAR scannner

Nifty little thing to do if you already have the lidar capable iPad, but I'll stick to using my leica disto laser bluetoothed to my 'redstick pro' app. Its super accurate, quick, can model in 2D/3D, and even directly export to archicad. Only con is I dont have the 360 image.
@erikleypoldt82753 жыл бұрын
The app is $400?
@michaelcook94143 жыл бұрын
@@erikleypoldt8275 Yes, although an iPad pro is around $1500+ / Archicad licence is $9000+ / Leica disto is around $600+. In the grand scheme of things $400 for a specialised app is a drop in the pond for an architect/ consultant. This is just a setup that works with my current equipment (and that I trust to be accurate) I would love a Leica BLK2GO but $60,000 US is a bit out of my budget. Ultimately we all just have to be comfortable, adept, and professional with the equipment that we can best afford.
@ab-hx8qe3 жыл бұрын
good video and I appreciate the effort but stop saying you get exact measurements and the app is great, to then in the next cut talk about how its not at all accurate. I cant think of a single scenario where a scan would be useful for architectural purposes with that much error. I see this being something that could have applications for digital art or modeling but just lacks the precision needed for anything architectural. Good luck with the next video.
@DavidTomic2 жыл бұрын
Valid feedback. Eventually the lidar system on the back of your phone will be highly accurate and that day will be game.changing
@JavierOropeza083 жыл бұрын
that accuracy is not great...I was really looking forward to getting one of these for the same reasons you seem to be using it for. But after this video, I think I need to wait a few more years for the tech to improve. If you cannot trust the scans for dimensions, then I see no point in scanning a room. Sure i get a 360 kind of view in 3d, but that in itself is not that useful. I actually use a 360 camera (not lidar) that I use to take photos of all the rooms in lieu of traditional photos, so the usefulness of the 3d scan is even less for me due to the 360 photos. When I go measure a house, it sucks. I always want to get out of there as soon as possible. A lot of times its hot, or gross, or you feel like you are in the way, so if I have to scan all AND THEN measure all, I will probably skip the scan every time. Now if the client has an ipad pro, and wants to scan each of their rooms, I can use that to study the project before going out to the site. I would take scans over just pictures. But even then, the usefulness of the scans will be very minor. Thanks for the video and look forward any updates on lidar stuff!
@DavidTomic3 жыл бұрын
Glad you were able to take a conclusion from this video. I do believe it will be an amazing tool in the near future, maybe a dedicated lidar scanner will be more effective, but ill continue testing until I find a good end result to save us all time and money in the field!

@@JavierOropeza08 I have had a few Blk live demos and its impressive and works very fast.The thermal heat loss over the scan looks great. Have not got to use the data tho. I am normally an android rather than apple user but the prospect of a personal Lidar scanner for hobbie projects is exciting.
