The most useful rundown of the chips yet. Thank you! Based on what little we have, can you speak on the power consumption, heat generation, and fan noise? Having used the M1 Air for nearly a year, as a musician, I am ecstatic about the complete lack of heat and fan noise issues. My previous was a 17” MacBook Pro, which fried two graphics chips. Not to mention the M1 SSD is 10x faster than the 17”, and the MacBook Pro’s are 2x faster than that!! My understanding is that the Max chips come with a beefier cooling system. Are Max users going to experience higher power consumption along with related heat and fan noise? Thanks again for your comprehensive review!!

Wondering if the RAM chips are 16GB modules only. Note they are stated as 128Bit bus each, so combined in parallel, gives you the total throughput, just like a GPU. The mem perf is stated as "upto - 200GB or 400GB", so wondering if its upto based on your config. If they only use 16GB modules, then 16GB config would only be 100GB; 32 would max out at 200GB; only a 64GB would actually hit the 400GB bandwidth 16X4 or 128X4 for 512Bit bus.

No they are not hyperthreaded, these are real physical cores.

Firstly, Hyperthreading is basically a special case of Simultaneous Multi-Threading, SMT (which is indeed hardware thread and NOT software thread) with static partitioning. Secondly, cores and threads are two different things. That means we have 8 physical cores and within that there may be some form of SMT.

It's probably physically disabled. Intel did the same. They test the chips and if it has a defective core, instead of dumping the chip at a loss they sell it as a lower spec (i3 instead of i5). Or if the leakage is high, they underclock it to keep the TDP.
@ne0tic
@ne0tic 2 жыл бұрын
M1 Pro is one chip, M1 Max is another. They don't manufacture different variants of those. Some cores are either dead or they disable them. For example with an M1 Pro, lets say one performance core is dead, they will then disable another one, maybe two GPU cores are dead as well, it then becomes a perfect baseline M1 Pro chip :)

Thats the same power envelope of the retiring top end intel 16" mpb and that machine could keep up nicely. @@FernandoAES yes but how many applications do push that much? If we talk about exporting videos, apple has dedicated encode/decode engines. If we talk about CPU based rendering, GPU utilisation will be minimal. In ML workloads (covered under several articles on M1, search ML on M1 macs) the work is done by the ANE and GPU combined, again, not possible to hit 90W. In games, for example, even running CP2077 on the benchmarked MSI GP66 leopard gives 95+ GPU usage and 45-50 CPU usages In worst case, you’re looking at 75W.

I'd suspect its more to do with the software perspective. They want developers to be able to reliably target a 16-core neural engine, the M1 also has the same number of cores, meaning its capability would be shared across all of their devices. (A14B, M1/Pro/Max and A15B all have a 16-core ANE) One notable difference is the clock-speed, which means the OPS differs. But theoretically if developers target a 16-core ANE, these devices may perform better without additional development effort. Getting technical, ANE and many other ML accelerators / NPUs perform memory and arithmetic operations on multi-dimensional matricies using DMA (Direct Memory Access). The number of cores refers to the number of 'pipes' that can 'start' their operation at a different memory address on large matricies. The number of neural engine cores has always been a power of 2. (2/8/16)

If you look at the die charts from anandtech, the neural engine is very small.....The biggest components are the gpu cores, followed by the cpu cores, so they are more likely to get damaged, The neural engine is also too important.....if it gets damaged, the chip gets thrown out.

What will you do on the daily? You will not notice a difference unless you're doing something demanding in terms of multi-core, like rendering a video. Prime focus of these chips are the GPU and dedicated processing blocks for video (en/de)code and higher RAM options. CPU won’t be as fast, but honestly, for video editing that macs are most popular for, you already have dedicated IP blocks. Even then, if 8+2 is claimed to be 1.7x faster than M1, that still makes the base 6+2 cpu on 14”mbp 30% faster than M1. In GPU, that 14c unit would be a whopping 1.7x faster, not as good as the 2x faster claim for 8c GPU, but still impressive enough considering the overall package - 1. Build quality 2. Speakers and webcam 3. 3K120Hz miniLED screen 4. Battery life

How could they menage performance as good as 3050 Ti for this little power usage i don't know, it sounds too good to be true, but if these claims about GPU performance are true, all other competitors (nvidia, AMD and intel) are basically dead. Because yes, you can't game on a mac, for now, but what if you could...
@HeyItsHades
@HeyItsHades 2 жыл бұрын
everyone doubted the M1 when gave their numbers. The reasons why they can preform so well with little power usage is 1) arm 2) SOC vs regular modular components 3) vertical optimization. Apples M1 Max is equal to a rtx 3080 for graphics and they showed that the M1 Pro & Max are 5 times faster than the i9 that was in the top level 16" MacBook last year. Also, because they have unified memory all that memory (up to 64GB) can be used by the whole system (which means including the graphic cores). Further, because of an SOC design there is no coping of information between the CPU, RAM, GPU, & storage which significantly speeds up everything. And the RAM is up to 400GB/s which is multiples times faster than any modular RAM today. Remember, Apple is achieving these speeds in laptops. On battery power. Thats not something that possible anywhere else in the entire market. Imagine what they are going to do for the Mac mini Pro, iMac Pro, and Mac Pro where they dont have to worry about battery power at all. Every company should be scared. For a long time its been all these other companies calling Apple out on their BS but Apple just basically gave the entire industry the middle finger. I know Macs cant really game but that is mostly due to gave developers not making games for the Macs because of power limitations. With these new SOCs, metal, and steam being focused on other markets besides Windows (linux) I bet in a year or two we will see a majority of triple A games on Macs and they will preform so much better. And all that ignores rosetta which transcodes x86 into arm (without developers having to change anything in their code) and most apps actually performed better even though they were being transcoded than they did on x86 (and those results were only with the M1 & Rosetta 1). Now we have M1 Pro/Max and rosetta 2. I remember watching the videos of the M1 where windows ran better being transcoded than it did on native machines. Which I just find hilarious.

@@HeyItsHades with the kind of extra CPU overhead that M1 Pro and max have, it’s very much possible to use a VM like parallels or crossover to play windows games just fine. M1 struggled because there weren’t as many high performance cores and the RAM was limited to 16GB so that maximum you could dedicate to the VM was 8GB. Nowadays, “recommended” RAM for most games is 16GB. Paying for VM once (even if 100$) is much cheaper than getting a new custom pc with similar hardware (including the peripherals and monitor to match the MacBook) If people can use one $3000 laptop for needs which previously required them to have a $3000 pc build, and still need a laptop for on the go usage (which could, again, cost anywhere between 500$ to 1500$)
