M1009 CUCV starter relay retrofit

How to retrofit the horrible factory CUCV starter relay to a common and available relay type.

Oem replacement 24v units are 45 bucks and readily available

Yes, the reason for retrofit is when the oem type fail they stick closed, running the starter until all the teeth are ground off both the starter and flexplate ring gear, and sometimes burning up the starter and wiring.

@Tactical Repair I hear that, and I could be wrong, wasn't that only on the 85 models and they fixed the relays after that? Ive read quite a bit on it, I came across your video inquiring on what I should do since my starters going out and i learned about this issue I would like to avoid altogether, mines still working good at the moment , the stories are scary though. According to the forums I guess the " doghead " mod might be the way to go - still searching thru stuff. Anyways, trade for subs? My m1009 is on my channel. I'm subscribing to you now. Thanks!

@@someonethatcaresaboutyou4526 yeah they were all bad about this problem, which is what brought about the " Doghead mod". This is just a convenient part I had available to do the same mod with. Sure, I'll subscribe.

I can’t find a harness with the small ground wire. Does that matter!

No, the size of the ground wire isn't really important. It just carries a very small amount of current to close the contacts inside the relay. Any four wire harness that supports a 24v heavy duty relay should work fine.

What is the part number on the other relay your keeping?

I have a cargo van with 6.5 turbo, I can take 12v starter off and put on 6.2 and do away with 24v system correct, or is better to stay with 24v?

Yes you can do that but it is better to keep the 24v system. If you convert to 12v you'll also need to install two standard 12v GM alternators.

@@staym925 effectively, yes. I'm on my second 30 day ban in three months for making a harmless factual statement. Supposed to agree to the new "terms and conditions " by the 26th to continue using Facebook. My ban goes past the 26th and I'm not agreeing to the new terms, so you probably won't see me on there anymore. Still on MeWe and Telegram though.

@@tacticalrepair well I'm on my 8th account, I'm leader of West Ohio MINUTEMEN militia and they delete our page 3 times, so they are clamping down on anybody who doesn't go along with their liberal bs agenda, smh, anymore I only use Facebook for buying and selling, and to use m35 and m939 groups, I've had my accounts deleted over and over, many 30 day bans, I don't bother anymore, but I will keep following you on here, thanks for all your valuable info, I worked on 900;series 5 tons in Marine Corps, but never got to soak in everything about m35's.
