CUCV - Doghead Starter Relay mod

This is the starter relay mod by Doghead at Steelsoldiers.com. Apparently, the original relay has a bad reputation of sticking, causing starter run-on and melted wires or worse. This is a preventative repair. The new relay has a quick distinctive pop.

So that relay provides 24v to starter solenoid. I bypassed by connecting the two purple wires together. Switched starter to a 12V also

I was thinking about taking a 6.5 and just mocking up all the equipment on to my 6.2, I can't imagine it being that different. I just don't want to blow up my motor

Have you had good luck with the doghead relay ? I have a ,M1009 with the original still on it haven't had trouble yet knock on wood just hate to cut wires .

mine fucked up and I didn't have a wrench with me when I finally got one cable off it went to 12v and started melting the wires I had to break the solenoid to prevent it from melting my system put in a heavy duty relay and month later it did the same thing, what relay did you use ford fender mounted??

matt dugan The relay I used is NAPA Part number 7018601. I think it was originally designed for a tractor. I put a link in the video description to the Steel Soldiers message board that discusses this relay and will likely have more info than I do. I'm not sure what you mean by the "Ford fender mounted".

I think a relay for starter motor is not having high capacity current. It’s just enough with 10ampare .

If you have 28mt new starter, this mod is necessary. My relay was fucked up then starter motor also fired up

If you didn't change relay and kept the original in would it start?

Yes. It would still start with the original relay. The consensus according to the Steel Soldiers message board is that this mod is an upgrade. Preventative maintenance. The original, as old as it is now at least, can stick, causing the starter to continue running and potentially fry itself and melt wires.

@@jacklope1 I had this exact issue. Starter was stuck cranking after I turned the engine off and I burned up a few fusible links. I still can't get the truck to crank when I turn the key.

What voltage readings are you getting on 4 different terminals on the new relay?

Why did you need to replace the relay?

According to the consensus in the Steel Soldiers forums, the old factory relay has a tendency to stick causing the starters to keep turning, potentially frying them and melting the wiring if you don't get the batteries disconnected fast enough.

Could a guy just replace the old one with same part # ?

Blake Parker I guess you could. The part I used was $8.00. The factory part I'm sure costs more and still is made in a way that could allow it to stick at some point.

Yea, I hate changing things from factory. Do you know anyone that has successfully turbo charge the 6.2?

I don't know anyone, but the Banks turbo kit is made for the engine.
