How to set your timing up on a M104 engine, in this particular video we will go through every step you need to do when mounting your cylinder head and everything regarding timing and camshafts.
The engine we have in the video is a M104.992 and it is a 3.2L, note that the timing setup might differ from some other models of the M104 engine.
If you have any questions or opinions let me know below and I will answer them as well as I can.

Thanks alot. Ever since I replace my w 140 with m-104 engine head gasket I got total engine lost power especially when I use AC high fuel consumption and the overheating but as I watch that your video I discovered that I made a wrong camshaft timing and I correct it everything is normal now

Auf dem Stirndeckel gibt es einen Stift zum fixieren der Gleitschienen, die kann man nach außen herausschrauben. Wenn man den vorher rausholt, kann man den Stirndeckel wesentlich besser ansetzen. Nur als tipp. Den Stift im nachhinein natürlich wieder einbauen.

BRUUTT!! Yeah it is very common to do it, because everything moves a bit after a heatcycle. But make sure you wait until the day after so its completly cold

Sjukt bra guide måste jag säga ! :) har dock 2 frågor 1 varför roterar du motorn till 30grader sen tillbaka när du monterar ? 2 vad har hänt med ditt grenrör (offtopic) :D?

Tackar! 1. Vid 30 grader så kan man rotera kamaxlarna fritt utan o ta i någonting. 2. Grenrörets coating har släppt pga nån kemisk reaktion till waterwettern

Good stuff, I love it! I'd turbo my M104.995, but i get lost when it comes to what to use for tuning. What are you using? Diff between .992 and .995?

Isaiah Brooks thanks man, you mean what ecu I am using? The difference is that most .992 has oil nozzles for the pistons when most .995 dont have it.

hi there, this was quite the video i was looking for. now i found a m104 engine, 3.2lt with manual trans, driveshaft and diff for dirt cheap and i was wondering, will this fit into a w208? i was thinking a single turbo, aftermarket ecu and injectors, but everything else stock, like pistons etc. does anyone know how much abuse (safe hp always though) these things can handle stock?

Teo Jeo check out our playlist hammer and spanner episode 6-7 for more info about the engines. I would say 500 whp is pretty safe if you have it tuned well. Dont know if the w208 has front or rear oilsump, my w209 has rear sump so either you buy a rearsump setup or go drysump like i did

Man I am building a Turbo M104 here aswell and I am installing a standalone ECU. Do you happen to know which teeth the trigger wheel is aligned with the #1 cylinder TDC. I have a later model M104 with stock 60-2 trigger wheel here.

Hi there I'm about to mount the cylinder head on my m104 2.8L motor. Is it really necessary to re torque the bolts as I've done numerous head installations and none required me to do so. Thank u so much

Vishnu Vardhan Kalainesan It is of course my opinion that you should do it but there are probably as many people who say its not necessary to do so. But i think it sounds pretty reasonable to retorque it after a heatcycle when the material in the gasket has changed a bit

I like the 2.8L and i think it can go to around 550whp on stock, maybe 750 whp with forged rods and more with pistons 🙏🏻

This is a super clean and informative video. I wonder where can I buy the head bolts? And how are the head bolts (studs?) different from the ones that came off of the car?

@@yl7277 anytime bro, the benefit it that they can be tighten harder which puts bigger pressure on the headgasket which makes it withstand more power. Also good to reuse because they are studs instead of bolts

When rotating the engine after resetting the timing and setting the tensioner, how much force did it take you? I am building a new engine and it feels awfully tight after I set the tensioner. Much tighter than any other engine I have spun over by hand. I am concerned that something is wrong but when I remove the tensioner it spins easy. Any tips? Thanks!

Did u reset the tensioner? Push the actuator through completly and then insert it from the back until the first click?

Yup. Tensioner was brand new as well as the chain and guides. Just measured with a torque wrench and it takes about 70-75nm to spin the engine.

@@drewisweirdTV ok, thats really hard to say.. but no sparkplugs in? Made sure the chain is centered on the guide? (Not on the guide edge? Easy to happen) can u move the chain up and down between the camshafts?

No plugs in, chain is centered and everything is lubricated. I’m going to double check the torque on my camshaft caps to make sure they are not over torqued (borrowing a friends digital torque wrench) but I don’t think that would significantly affect rotating force. There is no play at all in the chain once I set the tensioner.

Wow...I replaced the timing cover gasket and then started the engine, heard a noise in the upper engine and cracked the cam gear shaft on the intake cam....what did I do wrong ?

Are all the 300 sl cars just terribly weak. I just got a one owner 60K Immaculate car but it is just terribly slow. Is it just me or the 300 sl engines ? Thanks

Amazing job! Where did you get those torque specs for the head studs? Also do they apply to the head bolts if you use them instead of studs?

Thank u! The specs are supplied by the manufacturer of the studs (ARP) the stock bolts have a different spec

Jockewiie jag gillar arp bulten för de är beprövat och de är pinnbult istället för rena bultar, är därför lite snällare mot blocket vid flertslet omdragningar

@@TeamLovetap it does have the marker I just found it , it’s a separate piece you have to act attach it with a 10mm bolt.

why the head bolts are need to be retorqued ?

Because the tension changes abit after the first heat cycle, thats why we retourqe it to make sure it hasnt lost pressure on the gasket

@@TeamLovetap Thank you for the response. I'm going to replace head gasket on M104 but just regular one not like your enforced engine. Do you recommend to retorque in my situation?

@@biopump2000 yes i do, run it up to running temps and let it sit for a while, then let it cool to the next day and retourque it

It might be possible but it wouldnt be worth it, risk damaging the head and the valves
