In the western US we use a skeeter 6x6. It has the comfort and long range driving ability to get us to fires which sometimes require driving a few states away ~500-1000 miles. Once we get there its a great unit and takes us anywhere we need to go but bear in mind its used for small parts of fires which require water. The rest of the fire (thats REALLY offroad and off the map typically) is accessed by hiking in as a handcrew.

Short story time. Back in 06 we decided to use one of these on a raid. Good call, being quiet and nimble. Anywho, due to the area we were in, and all the shenanigans that was going on. The army decided to weld the secondary doors shut. Which left us with the drivers hatch, gunners hatch and main hydraulic door. Whole squad smushes into the back of one of these. We hall ass down the road to raid a "high value target" or so my co thought. We get to the location. Hydraulics have shit the bed. The main door wont open. Someone has to go out the gunners hatch. Which isnt big enough to get out with your weapon and or armor. So out I go. Residential neighborhood 3am, standing on a 12 foot tall winnebago no armor or weapon. When I hear from the darkness in an iraqi accent "hey yall need some help?" Yeah sure why not. This raids already gone sideways. Takes about 20 mins to dismount everyone. Guy asks "what are yall doing here?" Oh were checking out the neighborhood, have to talk to some people. "who" I gave him the guys name. "oh thats me, yall should come in for some tea" Turns out our HVT was a really nice local farmer who was up checking his livestock. Shout out to army intel and the mechanics for hooking us up that night.

Quiet en nimble? Compared to what? You should check your driver. He probably forgot to disengage the ramp lock. The hydraulics are so weak you can just push the ramp open without using the system. With two guys pushing you can snap the cable.

That was my first time dealing with anything armor related. When raiding the harbinger of death. Brushing up on the mechanical system of the truck wasnt priority. It was wake up, we have a raid, get in truck, go. You are suppose to giggle over the hilarity of combat. But seriously thinking about it. Im glad the dude turned out to be nice. The whole ordeal was such a gigantic shit show. Had he actually been the harbinger of death, and or had an rpg or efp set up. We would have been splattered all over the front yard, or mushed in the tank.

@@TheSpartanPaul Glad you all got out safe. That's the most important outcome. Yes with the M113, you need to revv up the engine to get the ramp cable taut, and then release the catch. Rehearsals are a must for Armored Infantry. I am surprised you were allowed as infantry to mount up and conduct an Armored-assisted ops without rehearsal. The combined mistakes could have been fatal.

If they saw a plt sized convoy leave at 3 am, expect a raid. Why they picked the worlds loudest armored Winnebago, is beyond me.

Onto a burning launchpad or surrounding wetlands? As a former M113 operator and platoon commander, I have fond memories, even done some drives through bushfires. But for rocket fuel rescue purposes, these aluminum hulls might get very hot quickly unless clad. The air intake is also not modified should it enter a low oxygen high temperature zone. There is no central CO2 fire extinguishing system visible, which are standard on most export M113, and the external activation box on the driver's side is empty (no trigger visible). There are no periscopes for the crew at the rear, something also standard in a lot of M113s. This can be dangerous should the crew need to decide to open the rear door or main hatch in an emergency but the commander is down. Hinges not modified for high temperature expansion, and no mallet or sledgehammer for emergency opening assist. No newer swim skirts installed, no trim vane. No tow cable, which is inexplicable. I hope they have done some field testing in the prescribed conditions?

@@jonathanerickson1543 in case of the Shuttle, you basically prey/hope that it can get high enough to do first the separation (from the boosters and external tank), then evacuation procedure. A traditional oldschool human-rated rocket has something called an escape tower on top of the crew module/cabin. This little unappealing rocket-on-a-stick (with a capsule underneath) makes a dogfight in modern jet fighter look like a funpark ride the whole family can enjoy, as it has to be able to outrun the main rocket at any time during launch, so acceleration upwards of 10G is expected. Soyuz had several instances where this system worked perfectly. Modern traditional-style rockets with crew have this rocket integrated with the capsule and it's just as brutal on the acceleration.

The Voschod had an ejection seat (the vertical landing speed was a bit too...fast...so the kosmonaut would eject and land separately) and it had this rather unwanted quirk where if you didn't assume the correct position...it would tear your head off. The Shuttle had ejection seats, but only for the commander and pilot. Those were later removed. If it was out of courtesy for the 5 other crew that didn't have them or to just save weight is anybody's guess.

remember back in the late '80s. Growing up in a quiet village the army used to do some driver training with M113s on the road along the local canal (which for hours at a time would see no other traffic). Several times over a 2-3 year period one would go off the road and end up in the canal. Amphibious my ass, those things would sink like a rock, and require 2 armoured recovery vehicles to extract from the water (which luckily for them wasn't deep enough that the entire thing would be under water, the crew could get out through the top hatches and didn't drown every time). No, those things definitely didn't float, and also didn't drive submerged to any of the nearby boat ramps to extract themselves.

I'm probably overlooking something but would these even, well, work? I feel like if there was a significant issue during the launch of the Shuttle, the crew are basically done for. There's no launch escape system, no quick abort system, the rocket is huge too which means they've still gotta go down hundreds of stairs / an elevator and to top it all off, the M113's are 0.9 miles away... If there was a fire, it's in one of two places: areas with fuel or areas with crew. Both are a devastating scenario. If the crew did somehow escape the fire (how? The Shuttle wasn't designed for that), they've still gotta get away from thousands of tons of extremely flammable chemicals whilst being hundreds of feet in the air. I suppose that an alternative emergency would be one of a health nature. Maybe one of the astronauts has fallen ill. The M113's could probably be justified here but I think it still seems a little silly. Using them in the first place implies you want to be protected from massive debris or a potentially huge explosion... neither of which the M113 will protect against. If the Shuttle exploded as or shortly after the APC's arrived, they'd be vaporised. Nothing would protect you there short of maybe a nuclear bunker. The only place the M113 might be perfect is in a small area that's close to the launch site but not too close. For example, if they're leaving the site after successfully evacuating the astronauts... but that seems like an absurdly unlikely scenario and one which already requires an almost impossible sequence of favourable events beforehand.

The M113 is made of aluminum. Aluminum APCs really, really don't like being on fire. I've seen one literally melt down onto the tracks like a guttered candle. Admittedly that was an ammo propellant fire, but solid rocket boosters are made of essentially the same compound as tank shell propellant, anyway. An SRB explosion would send giant flaming chunks of highly nitrated solid fuel raining down as projectiles over a wide area. It's more likely the M113 was the fastest available vehicle in the 1960s that could carry all the astronauts at once and PROBABLY survive if it got far enough away from the stack before it blew. A bus would be no faster and would burn easier. Can't very well send 5 Jeeps. Guess we'll use 1960's technology APCs.

I was a technician on one of those. One night, me and my mexican migrant worker partner got drunk and we took this tank for a ride, just to have some fun, we crashed a little bit into the rocket. Some days later, they lauched the rocket and exploded everything, including half of entire nasa staff that was close. Luckly, we were far away.... Its crazy how a random event can happen and kill you, stay safe people.

The M113's are alright & fun to drive, but the M577's have much more room in the back...lol

A better option for space would have been to use M577's. When we were losing US troops in Iraq I always wondered why we didn't just scatter all of the older 113's around the country and use them as armored pillboxes. At least it would have given our guys some protection instead of selling them by the pound to the scrappers!

It's funny because the shuttle didn't have any useful abort system and later in it's life had none at all. They would have been there to put out the fire but not a chance they would ever help the crew.

It was truly an honor to be selected as her operator. Climb a 60% incline with a full load of H2O, 1000gallons. My hotshot crews quickly grasped the earnestness when I explained that anywhere that they could walk without needing to put a hand down or out, we could carry water to them.
