I spent weeks living out of the command post edition of the M113 and recall seeing one at Cape Kennedy during one of my two visits there. The MRAP is cheaper to run, requires less maintenance, and is a newer vehicle. The MRAP also drives like a truck--not like a tank--so training is minimized. It isn't perfect--the MRAP has a rear door instead of a rear ramp, and staggering up that ramp in a bulky space suit was easier than squeezing through a door at the top of a short ladder--that first step from the ground is a long one. As for that astronaut rescue system, what an amusement park thrill ride that would make! It's not economical as designed, but imagine bailing out of a rocket, getting int the basket, zipping to the ground and then climbing on a "tank" to escape being incinerated. Amusement park designers, take note!

Yeah, a Boxer, Striker or Piranha/LAV would probably have been better, since they are closer to the ground than an MRAP.

Ah, my favorite US armored vehicle. I have my master's degree in driving and maintaining them. I would love if you guys did one covering the variant I had the the most fun with: the M113A3 OSV (OPFOR Surrogate Vehicle) which came in two main variants, the T-80 and BMP-2. I can provide help and reference pictures if needed! It has the weirdest combination of equipment - a modified Bradley turret, Gunner and Commander sights from the M-60 Tank and of course, the M113 chassis. They are used in huge numbers by the OPFOR forces at Ft. Irwin.

It's hard to beat the M113. It's a bare bones battle taxi; but it's very reliable, easy to maintain, and cost effective. As a replacement, I don't know what could match it. Certainly nothing wheeled, given the extreme fire environment it may have to enter.

A shame that the true APC role is obsolete; any APC mounted infantry coming up against IFV mounted infantry will be in serious trouble. Still a good chassis for support vehicles for second tier militaries around the world, competitive with its contemporaries around the world for such roles.

When a large asteroid lands in Russia they literally use thier main battle tanks for the initial reconnaissance because the NBC protection of a tank combined with its array of optics allows for them to observe and investigate in completely safe from potential hazards.

With the losses the orks have suffered during Tsarina Putin-escu's failing invasion of Ukraine, there soon won't be any MBTs left suitable for Meteoritic/Cometary Impact Investigations.
