It's nice to see a video that's this professional on KZbin, usually you gotta watch four different guys doing this in their basement with a hammer and a block of wood just to learn how not to do what your doing.

I was thinking the same thing throughout the video. Job well done as only a Marine can do unless it is an Army guy doing it (Go Army.) So many firearms videos are of such poor and inaccurate quality they are a waste of time. Well done Tonyben.

I carried the M14 in Viet Nam when I was in the Marines until they took them away from us to issue us those damn M16 which we liked because they were so much lighter, but hated because of all the Jams we had. I had to tear my rifle down hundreds of times in Nam. Whenever we got into a firefight or got it dirty laying in the dirt. Never had a problem with the M14 Great rifle. I own the M1A now. Still a great rifle. Thanks for sharing.

+philip Anninos My father and uncle (Pararescueman and marine infantry respectively) hold the same opinion of the the M14/M1A vs. M16/AR15. We all own both platforms but primarily use our M1A's in competitions (my dad actually prefers his Garand). Personally, I love my M1A but while I served and as a contractor I've carried an M4 (save for when I would be assigned an M249) and haven't had any issues. That said, I tend to be extremely meticulous with my upkeep and cleaning so I'm sure that's helped me in my case.
@MarkBrown51506 жыл бұрын
Same thing with me, no warning just "Here take this new weapon with you" Eventually I got used to it but still missed my M14 - wish I still had it! My M1 Garand is very similar to the M14.

philip Anninos your right a bunch of my older construction buddy's were there with you they said the same thing about the M16 they loved the M14, I have one its beautiful but I live here in the communist republic of California so I had to remove the flash hider because it made it an assault rifle. So now I have to install a muzzle break so it doesn't look like shit. Thank you for you service in south east Asia god bless you and all the US troops world wide then and now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I was at Parris Island, 50 years ago, we were only allowed to field strip our m14's. What you did was the armorer's job. Back then, we had to field strip our weapon blindfolded. You'd be surprised what can be done that way. I found your video very informative, Thanks for doing it.

Great work. Your M1A videos are the best. Thanks for the spent .30-06 case/extractor removal tip. I'd have never thought of that. I bought one of those M1/M1A bolt disassembly tools from Brownell's years ago and use it on my M1A and several M1's. It makes the job a piece of cake. Bought a similar tool for my FAL's, but the FAL tool is flimsy compared to the M1/M1A tool. Of course, nothing is easier than AR-15 bolt disassembly. All you need is a punch or the firing pin. Taught my daughter how to do it when she was 7.

I know this is an old video, but I just wanted to add my thanks. I could not get the trigger group out of my M1a loaded. This video pointed me to the mag catch pin (at 5:45). Sure enough, it had drifted out far enough to keep the trigger guard from rotating forward and releasing.This is a new rifle, not a well worn action, as suggested. A quick press on the side of the pin with a flat screwdriver, and my rifle is now apart. Thank you for saving me a trip to the gunsmith. AR

I have been looking diligent for another M-14 as the one I used in boot camp. I do not know the MOS of my drill instructor was, but he showed us how to completely strip down our M-14, including the bolt and trigger assembly. We also took our weapons into the showers with us twice. Once when it was issued by the armorer, and after being on the riffle range before the final dress parade inspection. I have talk with army friends and why they did not receive as much detailed instruction on there own issued weapons.

@tonyben39 жыл бұрын
Glad it helped you. It's actually much easier and faster to clean an M14 than an M16. All the carbon builds up in the gas cylinder which only requires cleaning every 500 to 1000 rounds and you don't even need to break the rifle down for that. You should only detail strip your rifle once a year or so.

Just got my scout squad and the previous owner took all of the grease off all of the contact surfaces....... I had to manipulate the op rod charging handle with a few taps of a hammer, but finally got it field stripped and greased her up real nice. Will probably be getting the sadlak piston, NM spring guide and NM op rod. I plan on shimming the barrel soon too. What do you have to say about unitizing the gas system? Thanks again.

Great video. I'm working on my first ever M1, and this helped a ton. My only issue is this was bought as a kit and came completely unassembled, and the barrel doesn't clock with the receiver correctly. It's like an 1/8th off. I've shimmed AR's on occasion, but these don't look like you can shim them, plus, the clocking is off far enough that it would take a shim like a 1/4" thick. What's the fix for this, or do I need to really bear down on turning the barrel? I know with the ARs, you shouldn't have to apply much torque to get them to line up.

Mr. Ben I have been very reluctant to take my action out of the stock since it shoots unbelievably well. However, I purchased the rifle used and have been worried about the condition and cleanliness of the weapon under the stock, since I don't know the history of firing conditions. After watching your video on the proper lubrication, I decided to replace the grease and clean. All I have done at this point is take the action out of the stock. I then noticed the op rod guide is at an angle and my op rod is very misaligned with the gas cylinder. The rifle is a stock( as far as I know) SA supermatch with stainless Douglas heavy bbl and McMillan stock. When I took the super tight-fitted action out of the stock, I also noticed the rear lug and glass areas had a coat of oil on them. That was very surprising considering the extra tight groups. The gas cylinder is not unitized or shimmed either. With the op rod guide crooked, I am dumbfounded by the weapons performance. The op rod even has a slight bind to it at the rear, but I can't see it rubbing anywhere, except maybe the track but that would have some wear marks anyway. My question to you is, what do I do now? Do I continue to strip the weapon fully and try and tap the op rod guide into alignment or what? There is NO roll pin in the guide. Thanks for your amazing videos. And thank you for your attention to this matter. Semper Fi, Matt in Georgia
