Tip for rusted screws - use Kroil penetrating oil. Sometimes it works magic.

Every Spanish Mauser I have seen has had rust pitting under the wood. I had an otherwise nice M1916 carbine that even had it. That is a lot of rust, but they have been in storage for a long time and this is the bottom of the barrel for bolt action surplus rifles. Sadly, the hay day of surplus is over. You would think that if they are going to spend 3 months putting in dowels, they could clean it up a little or at least not drill into the action or glue the upper hand guard to the stock.

Yeah, sadly you're right, but there are a few short live spurts here and there. But of course those surplus rifles now are more expensive.

Glad to hear at least you have a good bore. Thanks for posting this, I love these kinds of projects. Haven't tried HL yet for this very reason. I'd almost try it if they would not do any of those 'repairs' and just send it how they have it.

You'll be able to get the rust off but you can't do much about the pitting. I agree that it looks like it is probably shootable but it will never be cosmetically right below the wood.

These "repairs" are one step up from Bubba, and it's a small step. Who the heck glues the top handguard to the stock?!

I agree, thanks for the tip, yeah I would have much rather they left the upper handguard as it, I'm sure it was probably loose but it beats the alternative of being bubbafied.

Dude I would keep that stock it's numbers matching and nothing wrong with it in your other video you said something about a crack if that's true just epoxy it back and do a little sanding. And just get you a handguard . Also look into the boiling method it'll convert that Rust back to Black oxide
@The_Casual_Collector
@The_Casual_Collector 2 жыл бұрын
Nice thanks for the pointers, I may look into doing that, I could use the spare stock with it while I work on repairing the original one. Curiosity question what is the boiling method you're talking about?
@gumshoe2273
@gumshoe2273 2 жыл бұрын
Boiling converts the red rust into black rust, which can then be carded off with 0000 steel wool. Its basically reapplying the original rust blue applied in the factory. Repeat as many times as necessary to get it cleaned up. Several good KZbin videos about the process. I would recommend looking at Mark Knovak's Anvil gun smithing videos.

Rusty as a curiosity question what is the "typical" condition of the m1943 Spanish Mausers you guys have for sale at $98 each? Just wondering what I could expect if I ordered one, I know when I asked a couple of weeks ago, there was no "hand select" option, is that still the case?

This is why you always need to disassemble your surplus rifles. They need maintenance.

Thanks for showing us how not to remove the top hand guard that some idiot pined to the stock and the fact that these rifles have no Cosmoline on the inside, nor were they stored in a hermetically controlled building.

Just got my order from them, the Spanish mausers were by far in the worst condition of all the rifles. That being said, the Swiss K-31 looked great, and the other stuff looked good at minimum(when’s the last time you saw a Swiss rifle that didn’t?). Still need to do a full tear down and cleaning. So hopefully things go as I assume.

Is that the 8x57 js ?
@The_Casual_Collector
@The_Casual_Collector 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Howard, from what I understand, it is chambered in 7.92×57mm ( 8MM Mauser ). Here is a really good article explaing what you are referring to and how the 8X57 J differs: www.americanhunter.org/content/behind-the-bullet-8x57-mauser/ According to their article, "The 8x57 is also known as the 7.92x57mm J, 7.92x57mm JS, the 8x57mm Mauser or plainly as the 8mm Mauser; they are all describing the same cartridge, bullet diameter aside." From what I've found the original bore diameter of the mauser was .318 which is what the Gew 88 used. In 1905 the Germans adopted the "s" bore diameter of .323, which is todays standard. More good info:www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/mauser-8mm-confusion.852722/ For what its worth, my Spanish mauser was made in the 1950s.

@@The_Casual_Collector thanks. I bought one in cape town from a friend who did much the same As you. Your rifle was the closest to mine ive ever seen. I sold it to another friend. I remembered in the 70s when i helped iron out the dents in the stock with brown(slightly wet) paper and a clothes iron. Its quite amazing how they get smooth again We never had the internet to get the full history. But at least it got a second lease at life Nice job

I just veiw it like a casino. probably gonna loose your money, but you might get a lucky break. saw one guy had a solid good+ no4 mk1 for around $300 after replacing some bits and bobs. and he got an Iver Johnson 32S&W revolver for $45. can't beat that. said timing on it was good, lock up was good, and action rod wasn't warped, an overall good revolver. for less than $50. I was thinking of sending some money off to the gun casino....

@@acester86 the economy must be great...there are people that have, and are still willing to risk, hundreds and perhaps thousands of dollars for trash...good luck, but I don't have that kind of money. Weird thing about it is that people who have been screwed by these clowns are still willing to do business with them...much like a battered wife who believes her husband will change. These bums need to be shut down. I made 1 mistake with them, and will not make a second. To each his own, I guess.

@@stoegerstewie8351 I got a m43 spanish mauser. The bore was good...the only good thing about it. Searched 9 months for a stock, as the one that came with it was dry rotted and split. The firing pin was broken, and the bolt carrier was cracked. 10 months after receiving it, paying for a serviceable bolt and bolt carrier and a decent surplus stock and spending 300.00 extra dollars, it is good to go....NEVER AGAIN!
