Presentation: It is man who makes religion, through and through: he projects on an imaginary God the qualities that are his, even if it means carrying them to infinity, or he expresses in an illusory way his desires or aspirations. Religion is therefore a reflection of the man who ignores himself, a "waking dream" in which he alienates himself since he disposes of his own essence and turns away from realizing it in his earthly life. In addition, it mutilates him concretely through its prohibitions. Man, according to Feuerbach, must therefore get rid of God, become to himself his own God and practice the love of other men. This magnificent lesson of atheistic and critical humanism is more relevant than ever at a time when religion is making an extremely dangerous public comeback. However, it must be extended into a policy that fulfils it: it is to Marx that we must turn.
