I’m a Data Engineer as well as a hobbyist music producer that recently upgraded from the 2016 MacBook Pro w/Touch Bar to the MacBook Air M2 (spec’d out to 10 cores, 24gbs of Memory and 1tb SSD). For me, the deciding factor was the portability even though I knew the Pro was the superior machine. I have to say that since using it, this new laptop is beyond sufficient for my workflow and the trade off on performance for a lighter and more compact form factor was definitely worth it for me. No doubt I see myself keeping this machine for many, many years.

Same. I went with a $2k-specc'd M2 Air. I know the 14" MBP has better performance and more ports, but my laptops are constantly traveling and moving, and I'll trade some performance for portability. Everyone acts like it's sacrilege to max these out (instead of going for the 14"), but that's just because they can't comprehend other people's use profiles. They just stare at benchmarks at all day, and that's all a device is to them.

The code frees-up the memory, the JS engine is meant to free that up to the system, but the JS engine actually holds-onto it instead. Then when the website requests more memory, it gets given new RAM by the system. To this end, a Gmail tab can consume multiple gigabytes if you’ve left it open a few weeks, but restarting the browser takes it back to a few hundred megabytes. I'm a Software and Data Engineer, and I use a lot of local and heavy-duty tools in my everyday. So last year I switched to an M1 MacBook Air M1. My main struggle at the beginning, was that since I never used a Mac before, and I needed to upgrade my laptop, was "do I go for the 8GB or 16GB RAM model?" so, for my current budget at that moment I decided to go for the 8GB Model with 256GB SSD, because I use another monitor so I needed the extra cash for an adapter. So, I've been working with that base M1 MacBook Air model for more than a year, and I can tell you, for the amount of work that I handle, I think is the best laptop I ever had, period, no questions asked. I typically use Parallels, and a lot of Python libraries, also lots of web pages, but the laptop rarely gets slow, and since is fanless it is quiet as hell. I use Clean My Mac very often, and typically I follow the best practices to have the battery life at its best, overall its been almost 18 months with that model and it is the best laptop experience I ever had. My only complain with that model would be that it is a bit small the screen, but that's not like a big deal. I think buying this M2 model for someone who already owns an M1 MacBook Air, would be nonsense. I've seen the benchmarks and it is not a huge improvement, but it does cost 200 USD more. Unless someone is upgrading from an older Intel laptop, or Intel Mac, this might be the one to go. I even compared my M1 Air, against a 4000 USD dollar Intel Mac, and it is almost the double faster.

What I liked is that this review didn't stick to the general benchmark trope and actually talked about when the performance hits would be observable. Secondly, goes without saying that it was very well presented. The quality just seems to be going up with every video. What I am surprised with, and it's something that's more of general trend with reviews of Apple products, is how easy reviewers go on Apple products. We're looking at a 1200$ laptop which downgrades the storage speed from its previous generation while upping the price and without declaring anything in fine print about this change to the users. So much so that most users are strongly recommended to upgrade to a 1500$ model by default. I don't see reviewers being as forgiving for a similar product by another manufacturer.

They never do such hardcore testing on Windows ultrabooks as obviously that is not what they are designed for. I did my own research due to the bias in reporting on the M2 base and found that most base premium Windows machines have similar storage speeds or in some cases worse than the 256GB M2. The Galaxy Book 2 Pro 512GB when on battery performs 33% slower than the M2 256GB! Yet where are all the Samsung bashing videos on what is much worse than the M2? Of course, Samsung gives billions away in marketing and YT creators do not want to bite off the hand that feeds them. @@andyH_England it seems like you didnt understand anything of the main comment. It does not matter how the Apple Products perform against the competitors, because that is not the point that gets critizied here. Its the fact that they raise the price for their products when certain aspects like the storage speed are lower than the previous generation. And thats the product they competing against. With developing their own chips, Apple made a really good decision and delivered perfectly last year by beating every other competitor in the market. But one year later they just released a slightly better chip for their MacBook Air and new colors for their device. Good reasons to raise the price but if certain aspects (like the storage speed) get worse compared to the previous generation, than it doesnt make that much sense to raise the price. And next year? Another slightly improved version of the M chip, and again a price raise to get the most profit out of it, without game changing improvements. But thats Apple. Dont understand me wrong i really like their products and especially the new Apple Chips and how efficient they are but for me this isnt enough to stay with them and get their brand new products every year for even more money without a big change or even a refreshing one, like Nothing now did with their phone(1). Thats something the digital world needs more, something refreshing and Nothing proves that it doesnt need to be expensive. Lets see what Apple present next year, but 2022 is a missed opportunity

I got an M1 Air about a month ago and felt frustrated that I didn't wait for the M2 but honestly the M1 is incredible for video editing, and music production (with 16gb ram)

@@biggestthreattoyourexistence which one? Thin, powerful, with good display, great energy efficiency and not for more then 1000 USD?

M1 MBA is still the best laptop (price vs performance vs form factor etc.) Apple has ever made.

M1 MacBook Air is a great laptop and you won’t regret buying it. I use the highest and Lenovo and Microsoft laptops for work every day and I would drop them in a nanosecond for my MacBook Air I could. It beats them hands down at daily tasks for speed regardless of specs. The trackpad is superior, the battery lasts a good two days of use. Trackpad gestures add a significant amount of productivity. Best speakers. All round a superior laptop to any windows laptop I’ve used when it comes to build quality and real world performance

"If you miss the ports enough, you start to scratch the paint" Apple probably: just don't miss, duh

Thank you! I’ve been holding off replacing my broken 2015 MacBook Pro and I’ve gone back and forth trying to figure out which one to get. I ended up ordering the m2 air 10 core, 16 ram and 512 memory. I really like that starlight color. I don’t do work on my laptop or anything intense, just a Mom who needs something more than what I can do on iPad and phone and organize photos and stuff. I didn’t want to regret getting base model so just pumped it up a little. Can’t wait to get it!

Brian Tong makes great videos! The Final Cut Pro render times test he did for the new MacBook Air was also super impressive

Thank you for summarizing in the end the buying decision a customer would/should make! The thing that bothers me about Apple's current laptop lineup is that the options are soo expensive and some of them are greatly needed for the base models (the starter options are way too low as is). It just adds more complication and confusion for the customer to properly choose from Mr. Apple!

If Apple is too confusing for you, there is always Chromebooks.

@@danielvillanueva3792 hehe well I waited over 5 years for the 14-inch MBP to come out and ordered one of those instantly. Just to upgrade the RAM and SSD was many hundreds of dollars extra and if you do that with the CPU & GPU now your at least over a thousand extra! Apple is way too greedy with their options prices these days...

Thats why Just Buy the Most Expensive Pro®™ The higher tier versions of air exist to make the pros look great

Nice review. Personally I’m glad the base model M2 exists as It’s more than enough for my needs and it saves me some cash.

Bro i literally just bought the MacBook Air "midnight", with 24 GB of ram and 1Tb of disk. I opted for this instead of the pro because it's more portable and slick, and i don't want to carry extra weight. I do coding and infrastructure ( i'm a DevOps ) and i already used the best possible Air M1 for almost a year ( 512Gb SSD, 16Gb RAM, 8 cores / 8 CPU cores ). The reason i upgraded is the ram, i constantly hit ~1,5 Gb of swap and need more to run container tests locally.
