I won't replace my 8GB M1 MacBook Air until Apple releases the base MacBook Air with a minimum of 12GB RAM, 512GB storage, and a 90hz refresh rate display edit: some people are pessimistic on what I said. Base 2015 MacBook Air has 4GB RAM, 128GB storage, and 1440x900 TFT screen before it get last security update at July this year. It's very likely to get those minimum specs if we replace the M1 Mac at the end of OS support, probably at 2029.

Unless you are a 3D/motion graphics designer (which isn’t that many of you) the m1 will do everything you need. I’m a graphic designer and the M1 chip in my iMac with 8gb of ram runs all the adobe suite programs with no issues for me. If you’re using it for more intensive tasks, like 8K video rendering or something like that, then get a MacBook Pro. If you do get a M1 MacBook, make sure you get the 16GB/ model. If you need more storage, consider your iCloud storage account. Sites like Amazon and WalMart still sells them.

I came from windows laptop which was with higher specification ( more Than Euro 2500) but MBA 3 beats it in my usage . I mostly use it for presentation , research , social media and movies . Just upgraded from M1 to M3 Air. The speakers are so much better in quality and loudness. Although the older model had a better speaker placement. I'd say it is worth it just for the new design. Don't forget that Apple has $100 education discount so these prices shown can be actually lower.

Here are my two options M2 13 inch - 16GB/512SSD M3 13 inch - 16Gb/256SSD Should I prefer the latest chip over having extra SSD ? FWIW, The M3 version is $100 cheaper. I disagree in the conclusion The M1 MBA preferable in the 16 GB version (used or new or refurbed) or wait for the M4 as the M1,M2,M3 have the unfixable hardware bug. I personally prefer the wedged old-school design. Yes the M3 has the clamshell mode BUT you have to open the device for reaching the powerbutton, i hope they will change this so the device can be started without opening when used stationary e.g. on my Monitor with built in KVM. if i compare the prices from a used M1 (which are not significant cheaper than the Bestbuy offers) to a brand new M3 the real question is is the M3 twotimes better than the M1 NO, it is not faster, it is not more efficient, it is not safer (same hardware bug), if i resell my used M1 if the M4 is available i will loose less money instead of reselling my M3. What is a real changer in discussion for the M2 and M3 there is the 15 inch version which was not available for the M1.

Keeping it plugged in when it’s full is usually stressful to the battery. That 80% max thing, are you talking about how new iPhones let you set the battery to only charge to a certain point, so you can avoid the final 10 or 20 that are the most stressful to the battery to do? I have my macbook air m1 with base specs (8gb) and I am using it for everything. My daily work is done on it, mostly word documents, PowerPoint, excel and web surfing. Usually I also play Civ 6 from time to time (from an external ssd) and I do video editing in DaVinci Resolve (2 - 4 times per month)... And it has been incredible. For the money I paid for it and what it gives me, it is an excellent slim quiet computer that does everything that I want from it. Can it be better...I guess so...Do I want a new one, sure why not, it will do the same things...Do I need a new one, absolutely not,this is the best laptop that you can get for the money, and there is no second place.

You can get a refurbished M1 MacBook Air for around $550 right now and that laptop is more than good enough for most people. I’ve even played No Mans Sky with minimal lag and my girlfriend plays the Sims 4 with thousands of mods with no issues.

@@AbeM. you’re right, I see that now, I am surprised too that I really like the midnight color, I expected I’d like the gold one but to your point their new gold (starlight) is more of a silver, the old gold color is gone. That is a shame, I really enjoy some incredibly atypical yet really earnestly done colors for laptops. Silly thing, but it really adds to the appeal of the laptop if it’s a unique and interesting color like gold. Starlight looks like any other laptop. I ended up having to get a gray mb1 16” mbp bc it was the best setup I could get within my budget, and the gold was only available in the 13,” the midnight only avail in the airs. Yes, no problem for most cases. I work with heavy (60 gb or more) files from my Sony FX3 camera oftentimes 5-7 streams simultaneously at 4K 60fps on my Air M2 with 16gb ram.

Oh and it was the 16” screen, M1 Pro 10-core. I feel pretty good about this choice since I’m going to be using it for making video, editing photos, and producing music. My old laptop is a 2016 12” MacBook retina, it can’t even take osx updates anymore bc it’s “obsolete” and no longer supported. So for me, this is a huge step up.

I have a question regarding battery temperature which is not spoken about in most videos I have watched. I recently purchased an M1 MacBook Air in August 2023, a fantastic machine with excellent performance and timeless design, however seeing as your personal M1 MacBook Air is just over 3 years old and still has 90% battery health, as one would expect under normal use (With a battery manufacture date of May 2023, mine is at 89% battery health with 80 cycles). I am looking to maintain a healthy battery for as long as possible. While plugged in and with a full battery, I during sustained processor and graphics intensive loads, iStat Menus displays battery temperature increasing to ~44 ℃ until thermal throttling of the M1 kicks in, reducing CPU heat and therefore bringing battery temperature down to 43 ℃ until the task is complete. Watching your "How HOT Will Your FANLESS M1 MacBook Air Get?", I saw your battery temperature climb to a max of 44 ℃ during sustained load. Now while those temperatures are within spec of lithium-ion batteries, seeing the different chassis design of the M2 and M3 MacBook Air, I am curious to know how battery temperatures compare in similar scenarios and while the external laptop cooling pads you tested did not have a dramatic effect on reducing processor temperature, I am curious to find out how effective they are in reducing battery temperature.

It’s interesting to hear yours has aged that quickly. I don’t do anything more intensive than coding and web browsing with my M1, so after nearly 3 years of almost-daily, it’s still at 95% battery health.

All the “difference” are meaningless in everyday use, and that includes coding and photo editing. The only thing that makes a difference is 16gb memory. So the time is wasted to talk about minute differences such as design, thunderbolt 4, 2 display, 3nm, nobody should care because it makes no qualitative difference whatsoever.
