Congrats you are the first pointing out the importance of enough RAM, even if you will probably start memory intensive tasks later and you will not upgrade the machine then, you have to look a bit into the future, the future versions of the programs will for sure not become more lightweight, on the other hand you will use your machine for quite time (e.g. 3+ years) because otherwise the loss of value is to big. Therefore you have (especially as an intensive user) to take the stress on the SSD into account as they are soldered on (SSDs degrade quite fast, its the nature of flash memory), in my opinion the weakest point in apples product policy to not use standard NVMEs (if the soldered on would have double the performance to socketed exchangable ones it would be another discussion , but the soldered ones are slower then e.g. samsung 980 Pros) and the pricepoint of a 2 TB NVME is around 200$, so the uplift from 1 TB to 2 TB is only 100$ (appr.). For RAM the price policy of apple is also infamous, but due to the close connection to the CPU/GPU unavoidable.

I absolutely love how you put this comparison together in such a real world practical view. As a photographer this is so helpful. One test that I selfishly would love to see is how upgrading from 30 to 38 GPU would effect the new Lightroom Denoise AI processing which I believe uses 100% GPU. When this LR feature came out it took my 2018 Mac Mini over 10 minutes to process one 48mp picture from my Nikon Z7! I just got my new Mac Studio today with the base 30 GPU configuration and the same 48mp image took 20 seconds to process which is a big improvement. What concerns me though is that while Denoise was running on my new Mac Studio my GPU was at 98% which makes me second guess my decision not to go with the $200 upgrade to the 38 GPU unit. I have a feeling the 38 GPU configuration would make a real improvement here and would tip the scale in favor of upgrading. Have you done any tests on this after you made this video? Thanks again for putting out such great content.

For now it uses 100% GPU, but once the bug with Apple NPU has been resolved it would move back there. what the reason to compare photographer Apps for m2 MAX, if it worth way more less power of your Mac for work VS videoWorking as PR AE Davinci and so one, with tonns of layers on timeline, online playback, and a lot of things that really needs this power of MAX chip)) for photo things you need way more less power

Run on sentence, thoughts, and type - really difficult to understand. From what I gathered, photo app does use GPU so showing the variation is important. You might not care and postulate this question but my community of pro photographers do. And the power of the MAX SoC is really just more GPU. Some video app takes advantage of this well, others not so much. And to over simply photo need for a huge swatch of creative pro is just short sighted at best.

32 GB is the minimum but if you can budget it, 64 GB will give you more head room especially with brush usage and etc. If you keep your machine long-term then get 64GB if not then 32 GB should do. Also get the base M2 Max SoC not the one with the extra GPU.

But if you get a 2nd-hand M1 Max and it's release date was around Oct '21 when macOS 12 (Monterey) was released, whereas M2 Max was released around Jan '23 after macOS 13 (Ventura) was released, so there's the risk that in the future Apple might say they'll stop providing updates to users with macOS 12 or earlier. For example I have a couple of old MacBook Pro's from late 2013 and Apple won't let me update to a version any later than macOS 10.15 (Catalina) from Oct '19. That's one of the reasons I'd be hesitant to buy a 2nd-hand one even from the official Apple store, plus the unlikely but still possible scenario of it been hacked through the supply chain somehow.
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
When it comes to M1 Max, there's just one gen regardless of release date and one can upgrade the OS on it. 7 years is about the time frame for the OS release. I hear what you are saying but MBP 2013 that gen has been capped at Catalina for sometime now. Second hard or getting it from apple or not has nothing to do with it. Sure M2 may last an OS or 2 longer, but that is just logical since it is one gen newer.

Thanks for the awesome content. This is perhaps the only video that speaks specifically about 30 vs 38 GPU. I've been working from a 3.1 GHz Intel MacBook Pro 15 2TB ssd since 2017. So that means a "future-proof-lifespan" of 6 years. At the time it was almost the best machine available in the Apple lineup. Now i'm taking my time to choose my next laptop ion the hope of hit future proofing until 2030. I'm planning to do heaps of Final Cut videos, so speed and time saving means a lot. So, based on that, what do you think about this configuration: M2 MacBook 16 Pro Max 30 GPU , 32 RAM and 4TB ssd. Thanks for the awesome content.
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
It is a good config, however, I would audit your memory usage now. You probably have 16 right now so either way going to a 32 is an improvement. For me long-term use I would bump the memory up first and then the SSD, so I might trade 4TB for 2TB and bump the RAM up to 64GB. However, if you don't feel that you need this, what you have configured will do just fine.

Hi, I have a question. It’s so important because no one here on YT speak about the 14 inch MacBook Pro M2 Max 32ram 1tb with 12c CPU and 30c GPU but all speak about the 38c GPU version thermal throttling. So you have tested the 14 inch with 30c GPU, it’s better for the thermal throttling problem? I want to buy a 14 inch M2 Max 32ram 1tb 12-30 as I found it in super discount, at Apple it costs 3799€ and I found it at about 2889€. So it’s a big deal. Yeah maybe a 14 inch with M2 Pro 64 ram and 1tb could be better for keeping it for many years and for the thermal problem, as I want to use it for learning Adobe suite, video editing maybe with DaVinci Resolve and idk maybe some graphic design, UX/UI and programming, but for this specs i’m forced to configure it at the Apple website so more money than the deal I found. Idk. Thank you so much for a possible response and sorry if I’ve made some mistakes writing this but English is not my main language ;)

No worries. What others don't tell you is that it take quite a bit of work and pushing the computer hard to thermo throttle the machine and it is by design. Let me put it this way, if the size fits your needs and workflow, you can get it at a good price. Then I would jump on it. Thermo throttle or not. Don't worry about that. It might just run slightly slower for a short duration of time but in real world practical use, you probably rarely run into that issue. Other than long duration exports.

@@ArtIsRight thank you so much! You’re amazing. Yeah i think 14inch is the perfect size, as i don’t know if one day i will bring this with me, the 16inch for screen size its obv better but idk, the weight i think it’s too much. I’ve also found at the same price a 16inch M1 Pro 16ram 2tb but i think m2 max with 32ram and 1tb it’s way better, even with the compromise of the 14inch size ony.

SoC spec wise Max is better than Pro if you can use it, 32 GB is better than 16GB regardless of if you can use it or not. SSD space, you can always hook up external and expand, you can't expand RAM. And 14 or 16 just choose the size that you can travel with.

Hi I am a beginner user fpr MBP and I am a beginner for Video editing and photography, I want to purchase the MBP so my inquiry which MBP between this 2 model Apple M2 Pro 10-core CPU,16-core GPU and and 16-core Neural Engine 32 unified memory 1TB SSD storage or Apple M2 Pro 12-Core CPU,19-Core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine or 32 unified memory 1TB Ssd Storage. Or to save the money I can get the highest specifications by buying the old model as Apple MBP M1 Chip Pro or M1 Max.also my question is the 10-core CPU 16-core GPU slow speed. Hope you can recommend which model should I buy. Tks
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
I see, so first, I would recommend getting the base M2 Pro, the extra 3 GPU cores for $200 will do very little to justify the price increase. You are better off using that money to upgrade RAM. This said, M1 Max compared to M2 Pro, it does come really close. There are some advantages in the MAX with more GPU cores at a lower price point and it is still a solid machine today. So I would say, if you can get an M1 Max for a good price over the M2 Pro, go for it. Either of these machines, you can't go wrong.

This is NOT apples to apples. It just is not. The tiny 14" gets super hot so thermal throttling will absolutely affect the results. Otherwise, some good info still.

This is not accurate. Max techs testing is absolutely not indicative of real world scenarios. I push 6k timelines in a pro setting and have never ran into thermal throttling exporting 15-20 minute interviews. This is on a 12/30 14" m2 max

It would, most web dev does not requirer as much system resources as photo or video and the base M2 chip are extremely capable.
