Great video. Although i7 its a middle performance proc for x86 team. M2 max is the best processor (in laptop) you can get from Apple (and expensive) so it would be more fair to compare it with i9-13900hx (best of intel) and 7945hx (best of AMD) (and both are cheaper than m2 max mac *in EU). This way, you would compare all the flagship of each company.

For me personally, It comes down to - can I use the real Visual Studio 2022 or not. And since the Apple version of Vs2022 is just a faint copy of the "real thing", I have to stay on Windows a while longer. Yes yes, I know I can use VS Code - but as a 100% MS developer, Vs2022 offers a lot more than Code. For instance there are no scaffolding in Code. I did really think MS would get Visual Studio 100% on Mac this time - but alas no! Maybe Rider would work - but I have a MSDN license through my employer - so Rider I'd have to pay for myself.

On the mobile rtx4090=4080, whisper generates text every second with the python version. So with the microphone audio input keeps up pretty good. Whisper same code on the 2018 Mac i9 16 threads takes 30-60 seconds delay for text. Unfortunately the amd vega 20 not supported. But maybe would not help significantly.

It would be much more interesting if the tests are done with the m2-ultra and the 13gen intel i9 (13900kf or 13900ks) on desk PC not laptop. I have made similar tests on m1 ultra and 13gen 13900kf, the results turn out that the intel machines run much faster in all cases than the apple m1 ultra machine. So the conclusion is quite clear: if the performance is what we need, we should use intel desk PC. But there still some interesting things, that the PyTorch performance (CPU) can be comparable to the intel machines (desk PC not laptop) in some cases with small samples.
@akin242002

I came to similar results. M2 Pro Macbook laptops are faster unplugged for non-GPU tasks. Plugged in or a PC desktop, high end CPU PCs are faster. With Radeon or Nvidea GPUs, they are faster too.

@@AndriiVozniak WSl has great integration between linux and windows, but is limited otherwise. I fear a lot of workflows, specially those center around containers, are better on linux native. However, the nvidia drivers are problematic to say the least ( currently ). so is a mix bag. as an example, i am trying to find the actual code that @AZisk ran here since i suspect that there might be a weird issue in the results, i want to try to run them natively on windows and see what i get. This of course is for curiosity purposes as Alex has always been very thorough on his tests and videos. We are getting to a point in tech that we are saturated for options and so many different possible configurations can have an effect.

So what you are basically testing here is pure core speed, the programmes are only active in the CPU/SoC. No I/O to the SSD. IMHO this is a very limited test, it doesn't say a lot about real world performance when you are for instance compiling a big stack, editing video or photos, doing data mining, etc etc

thx for your interesting videos. LEt me add something here comparing speeds of Mac M1/M2 vs intell/NVIDIA or AMD architectures. If you use the laptop for any kind of AI/ML at least for now you better stay with Intel and NVIDIA. I personally use Pytorch for ML and although some of its functionalities have been ported to Mac Metal most of them dont, so in a project you cant use the GPU hardware acceleration on Mac compared to NVIDIA, and we are talking about speed differences from 10 to 50 times. I know plp will say that you dont use your machine for training models or any complex models but anyway we are losing A LOT of performance on this area. HOpefully in the a few years this will change, but for the moment Mac doesnt have the level of performance that a n Intel/AMD/NVIDIA laptop provides for AI and ML

Intel+Nvidia laptops are for full on performance, professional tasks, compatibility and gaming, even video editing 13th+rtx 40 has significant advantages in most tasks now. The main issue is the battery life and higher chance of fan noise even in light tasks, mainly due to intel's falling behind of TSMC in advanced lithography. It's exciting to see intel pushing to catch up TSMC in lithography. MBP is for efficiency, zero noise on medium load tasks and fantastic battery life, but still very poor support in those very specialised tasks like specialised engineering software and lots of research environment (like in my PhD project all the researcher either stick with intel+windows/linux or buy intel macbooks, that physics code just cannot compile on apple silicon no matter how hard you try.) Also even though apple silicon definitely can run some AAA games, the issue is that the performance is still poor and not stable (compared to the theoretical performance of apple silicon GPU), the 1%low fps is poor and there are many stutters due to non-native graphics support, so the AAA gaming experience is terrible for MBP pricing.

even though I use python, the performance is just so horrible for anything intensive. as a wrapper for C/C++ code it's fine, but too many fortune 500 companies have drunk the koolaid. I see lots of companies using python for ETL IO intensive batch jobs. The performance is just horrible, but lots of companies are doing it and paying Azure lots of $$. I'm hoping Apple keeps improving metal support for tensorflow and pytorch. Once they get the neural engine support beefed up, it should close the performance gap.

My desktop, i5-13400 with DDR4 memory is faster than my Macbook 14 M1 Pro (base model) by a mile... Windows 11 is becoming one of the best OS to develop on. Apple started a battle, but know it is falling behind. Do not get me wrong, I do love my macbook, it is an incredible notebook for the price I got it for (1599 + taxes), but a debloated install of windows 11 pro is awesome and it is kicking mac os but. Intel CPUs are really impressing me at them moment. But as a mobile unit goes, the macbook is still the champion.
