Ducati Multistrada RS vs. BMW M 1000 XR

The standard versions of these bikes, S1000XR and Multistrada V4 PP, are the best supersport tourers made. It seems that the RS adds too many compromises and cost for the relatively minimal amount of extra power and sportiness. The M1000XR’s inability to accommodate the S’s excellent paniers and top box (just soft baggage) moves it from being a multi-day mountain road muncher to a comfier (and compromised) version of the S1000RR. Both were created to make a point, but ultimately are pointless. The standard versions make far more sense for their purpose.

@@SP-xd8gs I haven't ridden the RS, but was just looking at the claimed power which is about +20hp over the PP. It's still way lower than the desmo in the V4 S Panigale. In contrast, BMW gives you essentially the same shift-cam motor of the S1000RR in the M1000XR.

Picked up my MXR on Monday. All the parts for the factory Panniers came on Tuesday. Theres a few things to change out. (Carrier, passenger foot pegs, S lower pipe, S rear license plate holder) but its an easy bolt on and its all factory. The rear subframe of the M is identical to the S.

For $1k you can put the S1000XR tail section which solves the luggage problem. Just bought the M knowing that was an issue but there is a solution without sinking another $17k for the Ducati.

Great idea? After considering the facts involved, I don't think so. In many countries this would be an unapproved and unauthorised interference with the homologated design of the motorcycle. How do you get it through tech inspection? Maybe in my country, it wouldn't pass muster. Because this won't be homologated, who's gonna insure it? If you insure it as a proper M1000XR (de facto you will be lying) and crash, then the insurance company can very quickly find a reason to exclude it from benefits, or refuse to pay. And the worst? The rear of the M1000XR is probably not designed to deliver/change loads, so eventually when you load Top Case on it you take all the risk. As a load bearing component, is the M1000XR frame at all identical to the S1000XR? On the Ducati V4 RS it is not, as it doesn't count the Top Case on the tail, but it can at least fit side panniers. Whereas on the Ducati V4 Pikes Peak it is and the frame is tailored for that. Question: is the sum of the above worth USD 1000? Yep: the fully configured new S1000XR is much better for touring. But I'd much rather take the V4 Pikes Peak personally. Unless the potential buyer insists strictly on the BMW brand. Anyway, I agree with the observation about price: a much higher price on the RS is a no go.

@DucatiDiaries 900 MI, K&N air filters but I left the carbon traps in, drivability is so nice I didn't want to risk playing around with air control of the mass air meter, with two giant throttle bodies there's no loss of any air, first two weeks it's been one update after the other when I get in the car in the morning, last week a warning flashed across the screen for 1 second that it entered in engineering test mode, car felt soggy actually for that Drive, another morning I had yellow and purple gauge cluster, other than that car seems nice, amazingly smooth and quiet at 100 mph, they could easily put a Lincoln badge on this car, the sport mode and track mode and normal mode are completely different,I floored it yesterday only saw a 7,000 RPM but that was in normal mode..... I think the car is faster than my older 21, it definitely has more torque it goes without having the downshift..... active exhaust is nice, it's really a very nice car that they worked hard to refine...

Not only is the Ducati way more expensive but the service will be a lot more expensive in the Duc
@hewlett62
@hewlett62 28 күн бұрын
About service: flat out this is not true, it depends on where you live and service > the reality? I have both a PikesPeak and a fat BMW K1600GT and the prices (hourly service rates) are a bit more expensive just at BMW. Also, home oil and oil filter changes are very easy on the Ducati Multistrada V4 PikesPeak, but more difficult on the BMW due to the "dry" separate oil sump system. Rather, I would see a bit of a problem with the Ducati V4 RS in that it has a desmo and therefore there are shorter service intervals for valve adjustments. Working on a desmo requires a more experienced mechanic and more careful work. The engine on the V4 PikesPeak Granturismo has its first major service at 60,000km. Service requirements (and therefore prices) especially on new Ducati Multistrada's with Granturismo V4 series engines are simply more favourable than anyone thinks.

Your friend is correct, don't let slower drivers in front of you dictate your Ride, Slower traffic Riders need to Warp away from Cars. Adaptive in Motorcycles is useless, cause you'll constantly be switching back to manual control. In cars, it's perfect, in Bikes, it's a gimmick .

I have a 200 mile round trip to go help my mother. Unfortunately, 98% of it is highway. The adaptive cruise control kept me sane on those rides. I viewed it as fun to use, safe to keep on (if someone jumps in front of you, the bike will immediately slow down), and a way to relax during those long rides.

I think this is a layman's opinion, which can be said by someone who hasn't experienced it in practice and therefore hasn't used the adaptive system on long journeys. It's really practical on a long trip and oddly enough quite fun.

@@hewlett62 I been riding Bikes over 40 Yrs, and if you’re going to let another vehicle in front of you dictate your “Long Rides”, then you have more patience than most Riders. Why would you stay behind some idiot in a car when you can just warp away and be rid of the traffic around you. As stated, normal cruise is a must, Adaptive is a waste, plus it’s just something else to fix on your bike “when” it craps out. 👎👎
@hewlett62
@hewlett62 28 күн бұрын
@@elithegreat6463 Of course. You've been driving for 40 years? OKAY. So? On a scooter, around town on your daily commute? All right, great. How many miles have you ridden on a motorcycle with adaptive cruise control, which is primarily what we're talking about here? Zero? So what qualifies you to say, definitively, that adaptive cruise control is useless? You forgot to add that it's your opinion, then that would be fair. But you're making a blanket statement. Others obviously have a different opinion that they don't impose on others. With this logic of yours, you could, for example, claim that you have been using a Nokia push button phone for 20 years and a modern touchscreen phone with AI is useless. For you it is, for others it is not. On driving: if I drive say 800km a day, why not drive 200km sharper, fully manual, nobody dictates my pace of driving, to use your dictionary. How about another 200km when I want to take a break and let the adaptive cruise control go at 130km/hr on the motorway. Others (according to you idiots) are also driving 130, so who is dictating my pace? Nobody, mate. When I want to pass a truck, I put on my left turn signal, the adaptive cruise control senses it and I pass smoothly, no jerking, no breaking. Plus, the blind spot assist in my mirrors (rear collision radar) gives me info that overtaking is perfectly safe. Smooth, smooth, everything at ease. and then for the next 200km, full manual again, and the speed and dynamics I want. No dictating the pace by anyone else is out of the question, which of course you would know if you had the awareness and especially the practical experience of how it works in real life. After all, if someone calls another driver in front of them an idiot, then there's not much to explain. Have a nice day and both wheels down on the ground.
