Sci-fi version of nature vs. nurture; the only problem is that both sides conflict with the goal: Being a girl’s friend and protecting her from sadness and loneliness, which are not possible all the time. The concept of making the doll a protector who takes her role too far, but is still so child-like that she enjoys it and wants to dance gives it an eerie element of fun. The doll’s ability to articulate herself at an adult level is startling all on its own, and her running on all fours 😳 with, “It’s nice to have a friend,” is perfect!
