Hey Josh. Writing out of a bit of desperation here, grateful for any guidance you can provide. I'm theoretically near the end of an S52 swap and manual conversion for my 1993 525i. I used the S52 from my old M3 and obtained an LSD. I'm stuck, however, at the driveshaft. I located and obtained the driveshaft for a 1991 525 manual car, having been told this would be a direct fit, but it is not. The splines to engage the LSD are different. So, my question for you is, what driveshaft did you use? Seems like yours went in without modification. Thanks in advance for any guidance.

@@jaywebster3616 I used a complete transmission/ diff swap from a 92 525i, zf transmission. What year/ model is your LSD from?
@jaywebster36162 ай бұрын
@@m3nameisjosh464 I suspect this is going to be the issue. Trying to figure that out today. I'm using the transmission from my M3, the driveshaft lines up no problem on that end, so betting that we acquired the wrong LSD. Been looking to modify the driveshaft, but seems like finding the right LSD will be easier.
@jaywebster36162 ай бұрын
@@m3nameisjosh464 OK, so I confirmed that my LSD is from a 1991 525i manual. And I confirmed the part number from my driveshaft is also correct (1991 525i manual). So, something is just off making my life hell. :) I decided to swap out the flange on the LSD. Seems the easiest route at this point. Thanks for the quick response. Your videos are life saving.

@@jaywebster3616 that is very weird. Make sure when putting on new flange you tighten the same amount on the pinion nut otherwise you will destroy the diff
@jaywebster36162 ай бұрын
@@m3nameisjosh464 Agreed, super weird. Makes me think that maybe someone swapped the flange before. I've read about the flange swap and the dangers, agree with your point.

The reason why it calls to torque to 140 ft lbs then loose and retighten to 89 ft lbs is because the initial torque spec seats the driveshaft flange on the splines. If you put it to 140 ft lbs and slap it in the car you risk damaging the output shaft bearing or that new seal you installed. Also make sure the input shaft bearing don’t need to be replaced within a few months, it’s a horrible sound and requires full disassembly of the trans to replace it. And regarding the power steering system it calls for dextron atf for me so correct me if I’m wrong but Im thinking you can use dextron in it. Also is 80w90 too thin for an lsd? Mine don’t chatter or lock up or anything and I use castrol 80w90 with lsd additive
@m3nameisjosh4642 жыл бұрын
I assumed thats why it calls for that torque sequence, glad i followed it. Ive had a zf with a bad input bearing, not fun lol. But lots of people run 80w-90 in lsds. Im sure it doesn’t matter much, but bmw did call for 75-140 so stuck with that
@funnypranker342 жыл бұрын
@@m3nameisjosh464 I did some research on the oil weight. Bimmerforums members say running 75w90 or even 75w140 (which depending on the application is the specified viscosity) of any brand of gear oil noticed low speed chattering and lock up when the oil is cold when the diff reaches high mileage. Running 80w90 or thicker made the chatter go away. Hopefully yours don’t chatter or lockup at low speeds when winter comes around. My friend has this Nissan sports car he ran a 250 weight gear oil in his aftermarket clutch based diff because the clutch based diffs chatter a lot when you don’t have thick oil in it. I think the e34s only have a VLSD so the thicker fluid allows the diff to work better under higher temperatures and locks up more aggressively and possibly harder
@m3nameisjosh4642 жыл бұрын
@@funnypranker34 been running 75w-140 in my 500hp turbo car without any noises or issues so decided to stick with it. I have heard of people experiencing chatter with certain brand fluids and stuff. We will see!

Hey. I just came across your channel and idk if you’ve talked about this on your channel before, but im looking to buy an e34 525i in the range of 1992-1996 and Im wondering about vanos and non vanos. What would you recommend and why ? Especially since Im interested in slapping down a turbo on it later down the line. Also wondering about the transmissions (only manuals) ? Is the ZF better or worse ? Would appreciate all the info, you could share.

Watch my how to but an e34 video! As for vanos or non vanos either one is great. Non vanos is a stronger engine but vanos helps with boost. Zf is the best transmission, only came in 91-92 525s. Getrags are not good for power
