M4 iPad Pro Initial Impressions: A Photographers Perspective

I picked up the new M4 iPad Pro to replace my M1 iPad Pro. This video is initial impressions of the new M4 iPad from a photographers perspective and how it plays into my workflow and use for travel. Is the jump from M1 iPad Pro to an M4 iPad Pro worth the cost? Is it worth it to pick up the iPad for photography?

I understand you when you say it’s really cool using the apple pencil and your fingers to interact with your photos. It brings out that human element Apple is so keen on bringing out. I use my M1 iPad Pro and use touch for the majority of the time using it. It feels so natural and everything is elastic. The giant 13’ screen can turn into a full size keyboard, a number pad for spreadsheets, piano, guitar, game controller for games, sit down outside and read a book, scroll 📜 a book on Apple Books or turn the virtual page. I bring it with me everywhere I go. I take notes and drag images into notability. I’m learning cursive handwriting and calligraphy. It’s awesome.

You definitely don't need to, you might just want to. You're holding more than enough power. I have a 2021 m2 ipad pro and now the 2024 m4. Tbh I don't need the 24.

Also you can buy 240W USB C Cable, 40 Gbps High Speed Cable to transfer files faster from camera/card reader to Ipad.

Welcome in 2012. I choose hybrids back then exactly to be able to edit photo in Lightroom and then in Capture One Pro on a tablet (with pen to draw mask and move sliders precisely). Strange as a photographer to not have wanted to use a tablet since the last 10 years and force yourself to do it on a Mac. Tha tis quite serious limitations without much benefit...

The real issues is that all the accessories are not compatible so you need to rebuy the keyboard and stylus and this is a 450-500€ additional so 2500€ for the upgrade. That is a very expensive update.

That is very true, I never have used the Magic Keyboard or anything and all of ever used is the pencil but it is an expensive update for someone who uses all the iPad accessories

GOOD VIDEO. QUESTION HAVE YOU USE EXTERNAL SSD HARD DRIVE TO EDIT PHOTO VIDEOS? CAN YOU IMPORT DIRECTLY TO SSD DRIVE USING THE IPAD AND HOW DOES IT PERFORM? THANK YOU

Thank you! I have not as when I use lightroom it imports directly to the cloud storage. Im sure there is a way to do so I just have not figured it out yet, and if lightroom doesnt allow it maybe a different photo editior will do it. If I figure someothing out I will most likely do a workflow video about it :)

WoW ! H@ppy Birthd@y Young-man! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I haven't had experience of those M-series CPUs in either iPads or MacBooks. Currently, I'm still using the A12 iPad Pro for casual photo editing. I'm also interested in tryout the latest M4 iPad Pro to edit my Sony A7RV. I suspected that M4 CPU do give a "speed-bump" of photo-editing process when compared to previous M3/M2/M1. Wondering, does M4 iPad Pro's RAM configuration also need to be maximized in order to beneficial the overall photo-editing performance? Also, Sony A7RV's RAW or JPEG are relatively huge, does M4 iPad Pro's capacity able to handle it properly and smoothly? Thanks.

Thank you 🙂 So far it has been able to handle anything I throw at it and even when I edited photos from my A7RV on my older iPad, the new one definitely has a difference. I plan on making an updated review in a few months since I will have used it extensively by then.

@@Dan.gibson.photographer yeah it's annoying. You also can't mask the background automatically which is weird lol. You can mask the subject and sky, but not the background. It doesn't make sense.

@@duvalpenny100to mask the background select the subject when masking and then just invert the mask. For the Denoise feature that may be to intensive but it’s possible they’ll add it in the future but you can use the built in denoise feature it works pretty well

Not taking away on the iPad's, but even though it is has m4 chips what ever power they have the apps for my just don't work. Mouse support is awful, trackpad is okay. I would take less powerful chip on MacOS any day over an iPad.
