I have been waiting for your review and you didn’t disappoint. I use the M1 11” iPad Pro for 99% of my computing needs, the only task I need to use our M1 MacBook Pro is stacking my astrophotography subs. If I could do that on my iPad Pro, I would no longer need to use our MacBook. That being said I am going to purchase the M4 iPad Pro, I haven’t decided on which size or if I will include cellular.
@Rfhuir3437 ай бұрын
This is pretty much the same for me. However, I’ve now offloaded my astrophotography stacking (PixInsight) to a beefed up Mini PC and just RDP to it from my iPad. I also use WireGuard VPN for when I am on the move and want to access mini PC.
@CeresIsAwesome7 ай бұрын
Exactly the same problem here. I use my iPad for astrophotography, except it can't run any of the software for Photoshop from RC Astro. That, and the fact that iPad OS doesn't have a calculator when they could just port the iOS calculator is insane to me. The M4 chip would run blisteringly fast with RC Astro's astrophotography add-ons. It's a shame really -- I wish iPad OS would merge with Mac OS the same way Microsoft made Windows 11 designed for desktops or touch screens both.

This is the iPad I’ve been waiting for. For a non coder this is perfect as a computer replacement. It’s portable. It’s light. It’s fun. It’s fast. It has tons of accessories and can morph into so many different form factors. As an owner of a MacBook Pro m3 and a previous owner of an 11” iPad Pro m1. This is the update I’ve been waiting for. I went with a 1tb regular glass 11” with Magic Keyboard and new pencil and Zagg screen protector and new magnetic folio. I plan to replace my laptop with this device and sell the laptop all together. So much of what you said helped me reaffirm this is what I’ve been waiting for. Thank you Chris
@jack_26127 ай бұрын
why aren’t you waiting for wwdc next month to at least be sure iPad OS will get the updates it needs in order to even begin to replace a laptop? I’m saying this considering how much an iPad Pro costs. The price tag makes it a huge gamble right now, since it is not even close to the convenience of a MacBook Air in terms of portability vs capability and ease of use. A MacBook Air is far more complete, can perform heavier tasks when needed and has an overall better OS (well… iPad OS is the worst in the Apple lineup so it was kind of an easy comparison). I own both the devices you mentioned (MacBook Pro M3 Pro and iPad Pro M1, 11” sold for a swap with 12.9” M1) and I know for a fact the iPad can’t replace the MacBook even for a non-developer or non-pro user. That makes me curious, so I’m going to ask, if you don’t mind. Do you have a desktop? That would absolutely explain everything and I’d probably be on board with the portable experience of an iPad over that of a MacBook, but only if there was a proper desktop waiting at home, if you know what I mean. Just curious, that’s it
@zdoubleyou20737 ай бұрын
@@jack_2612 i have a work computer provided by work for work stuff, always have and always will in my line of work. Not concerned with the price. I dislike to say that as it comes off a certain type of way but fortunately for me im fortunate enough that this can be a toy if i want it to be. (i bought my 11" pro outright plus all accessories, no financing needed) I have also edited drone video professionally on an ipad pro in the past using lumafusion so i know for any hobby i get into that im interested in, the ipad pro is enough. my personal computing needs are shopping, reading, banking, budgeting, investing, lite video editing, streaming content, listening to music, and communication. my phone technically does all that. If the iphone had PROPER external display support, proper screen orientation for external display and springboard, and keyboard/mouse support, id just TB4 into a monitor or tv and use that as my ONLY personal device. there is nothing wrong with waiting, or buying now if it suits your needs. WWDC will be here next month and new software in september. I want to watch youtube on a portable OLED screen while eating breakfast before work now though :) Again, its really all about your needs and what you do. The iPad is an extremely capable device, it requires thinking about the programs as touch first, and sometimes a workaround through a shortcut or multiple apps to do what one can. There are plenty of great apps and cross compatible apps, ( drafts, Ferrite, notes, photos, Things, web versions of google docs, sheets, slides through safari, Lumafusion, FCP, Affinity Photo/Designer, Procreate, PsPortal, Xbox Game Pass) These are some apps I use and free me from needing a desktop, or laptop in my personal life. Add in Zoom and this would even be enough for me to do my work professionally. Whatever works for you! Christopher has great content on his channel that goes over using the iPad as a main device and if you're ready willing and able, try going iPad only for a day or two and see how you like it.

@@jack_2612 What are you doing on your mac that you can't on your iPad pro? Especially as a non coder and even as a coder there are work arounds.
@jack_26127 ай бұрын
@@unbornG4 why would I want a workaround just to use a device that is double the price of a base MacBook Air? Anyway, the iPad is just Netflix and notes in uni. Ok the MacBook I do everything else, from notes to assignments to research to watching twitch and yt, browsing and even some gaming. I bought the M3 Pro because I had an Air and I did not see a way I could last 5-6 years with it, but I wanted a Mac that could last me that long. Plus, I can’t stand 60hz anymore and the Apple pricing for upgrades is… well you know. So by the time I spec up a 15” Air to have 512 and 16 gigs of ssd and ram respectively, while getting the base core upgrade to 10 if I’m not mistaken, well I’m already well over 2k by miles. I live in Italy, which means the markup I get… I get it on every single upgrade, not just on the device itself. An iPad Pro 13” for example is 1600 euros. Now, I won’t go into detail about how iPadOS is nothing like having a full desktop OS, but just for giving an example I recently took an English certification exam and if I didn’t have a MacBook I could not have taken it remotely from home. The iPad was specifically listed, ironically, as an example of non-compatible device for the exam. It’s a niche case, but throughout uni I’ve had plenty of problems when I was trying to go iPad-only and it felt like I was trying too hard to do something that didn’t make sense trying to. Like… getting a MacBook is way cheaper and is way better in any way, so yh I have an iPad for the Apple Pencil and for that it’s great, but for even the most basic computing or multitasking it’s trash. In conclusion, before you jump at me about the “not needing a MacBook Pro”, you’re right. I don’t specifically need it. I’ll be studying in a Master program starting in September and I will be learning coding, data management and so on and I will work in IT in the future, so I’d rather have a device I can afford now (quitting my job in September so I won’t be able to afford it down the line, not immediately at least) and keep it for 5-6 years instead of settling for an Air. On top of that, as I said, a 15” specced up would have been as expensive as MacBook Pro. So yh, that’s my reasoning about the whole iPad thing. At least for now, maybe wwdc will change everything lol
@zdoubleyou20737 ай бұрын
@@jack_2612iPad may not work for you. But it works for many others including the creator of this channel who is an iPad primary and only device user. Also, I and many others can afford the iPad as a toy even in 1tb configs with 2000 plus price tags and all accessories paid upfront. Apple is seen as a luxary brand. Not everyone who has a car has a Mercedes, Lexus, bmw etc. I can use iPad as my Main primary and only device both professionally and personally. Or it can be a toy. Same as a MacBook. It’s all about what you do. Everyone has the choice to buy whatever devices they want for wherever their use cases are. Some people can afford whatever they want. Others are on a budget. Apple has something for everyone. Use what’s right for you and be happy you have something that works for the tasks you need it for. Enjoy your devices. 5-6 years is always going to be tough to keep any device. There will be something newer and better every year. Just be happy with your choice and enjoy the device. Upgrade as needed or desired depending on finances and value and have fun.

Hello from someone who absolutely relies on the ultra wide rear camera for professional work! (20:08) I do architectural surveys where space is always tight but photos always need surrounding visual context. The iPad has been my sketching and data-collection tool. When the iPad Pro came out, it also became my main camera, replacing a cumbersome DSLR with 24mm lens, which previously replaced a GoPro, and the results have been breathtakingly superior! The 0.5x (ultra wide) is far easier, quicker, more convenient in one device. And seamless zoom back to 1.0x and beyond (telephoto) produces crisp clear photos & videos like a true pro. Amazing low light performance, too. It’s one heck of a critical feature that I cannot upgrade to the M4 iPad Pro for the lack of it! Without ultra wide, I cannot do my work!

If I had only a 9.7 iPad, I might consider the M4 Pro. 5:05 If you have AppleCare, how much is cost in USA to have an Apple-authorized replacement of 2024 standard display, and then nano texture? Might be more economical to purchase matte protector if nanotexture costs are higher than for Apple’s standard glass. 9:58 Glare is a problem inside from lights. Reduced glare in-person is dramatic. 11:08 See jerryrigeverything, he did scratch tests on nanotexture with a variety of things. Really surprising some usual suspects did less damage! I cringe: he does these tear ups. 19:44 Can you use your iPhone as the Facetime during a video meeting? 21:39 In the iPad mini, i just saw the camera has a scan document option. Is that not sufficient? 24:19 the charging magnets in the pro pencil are further apart on it and those on the iPad. 25:40 on m2 pro and apple pencil 2nd, in some apps you get the hover preview showing onscreen brush location and the brush shape, even when i twisted the pencil. So, whatz’s the difference between its hover preview and that of the Apple Pencil Pro? 30:59 use case for “lap” not so much if I was mostly pencil-centric. 31:55 magnets positioned in different spots on back of iPad is also why the m2 pro not going to stay up on the new M4 keyboard.

Thank you for the good review! I love my M1 iPad Pro and don't have any plans of upgrading any time soon, but it is very nice to hear what other people think of it. My only concern about getting the iPad to replace a laptop is that you can get such an advanced MacBook for the same price as the iPad Pro that it doesn't seem logical to use an iPad instead.

You can click anywhere on the previous Magic Keyboard without issue. It literally isn't thing. I am more concerned why/if or how come the previous keyboard is not "listed" as compatible with the new m4 ipad Pro. The previous keyboard just needed the three prongs on the back to connect to charge, the magnet was just to secure it, right? Will the new m4 ipad pro recognize the old keyboard? if the rear metal connection prongs on both devices make contact with each other, will it work?

The previous magic keyboard works with the new m4 13” ipad pro. the magnets are misaligned so it does not stick to the keyboard, but the keyboard, trackpad and charging work. I just tested now. updating ipados now.

No.. I think I’ve finally decided to get the M3 MacBook Pro. I’ve got to stop waiting for the next newest model. I’ve been without a computer since 2013 but definitely it’s time to make the plunge. I’m just scared to purchase. Your videos have helped a lot. Thx.

Very happy with this review. It’s what I want to have as installation in my car. Paper like is perfect. Hope that the installation is not to difficult or to expensive. I am open for all suggestions to have it fixed. iPad Pro 2024, 11 inch m4

Love this review. Personally? I’m gunning for the 256GB 13” IPad Air as that more than enough power and storage. It’s enticing, but I don’t need that M4 as that’s way too much power for me and I know deep down I won’t use all the features Pro, it’s like I edit hard 4K videos or photos. I just think that the iPad Air is more realistic for me to utilise as for organising my day to day and life and doing productive things👍🏾. Great review by the way. I’m subscribing.

I loved taking ultra wide pictures with the iPad Pro to capture a room and sketch up on the photo to iterate on room design. Yeah I can also take a photo with another device but having it right in there just more convenient.

Your review is the best. When will YT reviewers actually do research on how people use iPads? Most people are not rushing to make YT content with their iPads and comparing the device to MacBooks. So tiring.

The geekbench score is insane! Am I right in thinking the test doesn't discriminate between mobile and desktop? Fantastic review Chris!

29:50 that's very weird. I can click anywhere in my old Magic Keyboard with the old trackpad.

The very top shouldn’t work on the old one.

Interesting thoughts on the screen. Some other videos have said its "better" but "not life changing"

Is that little microphone on the screen next to the front camera already underneath the glass itself? I can’t remember I immediately had a screen protector put on it, which ended up not having a cut out for the front camera or microphone. Just kind of wondering if the microphone is exposed or already under the screen itself. Can’t find any up close pictures that I can tell from and I don’t want to peel my screen protector off to find out.

Awesome review! Been watching your videos for a while. Thanks to you, I use the IPad exclusively for work. Just got my new Pro 13 today! As someone who is streaming and recording gameplay, what editor do you suggest for IPad and do you feel its worth editing on the Pro 13. Keep the videos coming! Thank you!

Hi, how do you use AI functions in Adobe Lightroom? Because there are no noise reduction or super resolution available on mine. Really not gonna use another app for another function etc etc.
