M4 iPad Pro Thoughts, Why Upgrade? Logic, Final Cut, M2 Air?

Apple announced the newest iPads Pro last week (along with the M2 iPad Air, with a new 13 inch option). The new pros have a lot of interesting changes, I figured it would be fun to talk about why I would or wouldn't upgrade from my M2 Pro, and who maybe should consider the upgrade. Apologies for any rambling and gravely voice, I've been sick for a week (hopefully back to full health soon!).

After going to a MAC STUDIO from a custom PC I had built, I'll never go back. LOL. One of the greatest differences, is there is no heat coming from the MAC STUDIO. Even though I had a ton of fans on my PC, whenever I was working on it, it would make my room so hot, gave off so much heat. Love how the MAC STUDIO is a few inches from me on my desk, and there is no heat at all, and it runs all my ADOBE programs, LOGIC PRO, etc, flawlessly. Currently on a 12.9 M1 iPad Pro, still runs incredibly.

I've been daily driving a 2018 iPad Pro since release, which still handles busy Drambo and Logic projects like a champ. It's been a music production powerhouse since I got it, but I'm very tempted to finally upgrade. It'll be nice to load far more instances of CPU demanding synths like Moog Mariana and others + be able to take advantage of new Logic features that require m-series.

Me too bro. The best most future proof device I think they ever made. My battery health is still 95% on it. My 2019 mbp (worst mbp I ever had) has 78% with only 265 cycles. 2018 ipad pro is king.

I've had my 2nd gen Pro 12.9 since 2017. It's still perfectly fine for almost everything I do... almost. A year ago I was sad to see it would not support Logic. With the M4 chip and the features of the new version of Logic, I finally have a reason to upgrade. I briefly considered getting a Macbook instead, but realized it doesn't fill the same function as an iPad and I have a Surface Pro 7 for those features.

I just ordered a 13 inch ipad pro (my first ipad) I got 16gb ram so interesting you say its not worth it aha, I mostly do visual art stuff though so I know it's good for procreate layer count and resolution limit. I'm also interesting in zbrush coming out soonish which I expect will be more demanding. And yeah like you mention the new pencil is sweet for art apps.

Congrats!! Long term hopefully more ram pays off, and if you’re doing visual arts stuff like you said, there should be some impact in procreate and potentially procreate dreams as well. I hope it treats you well for years!

Goes to show, people will upgrade their iPads for Netflix/KZbin, despite iPads from 2016/2017 can run them just fine. It’s all about wanting the next best thing. That wouldn’t be a problem if iPadOS took advantage of the hardware but from 2017 and on, the iPads have been more than capable of most types of use cases.

iPadOS enforces limitations on the amount of RAM that can be allocated to an application, at least for third-party apps. You can *indicate* that your app would benefit from more RAM. I'm not sure how much it can currently allocate to an individual app, but it's quite possible you're correct that the 16gb version isn't gaining you any more RAM for say, Logic Pro for iPad, but I'm not sure. If any apps were to be able to take advantage of the full 16gb, it'd be Apple's first party pro applications. I think in a previous video about logic pro for iPad you mentioned that you don't really like generative stuff. I can respect that some people really want to put down every note they write in their compositions from nothing, but to me generative stuff is kind of like noodling on an instrument. You don't always know where it's going and a lot of it is going to be crap, but sometimes you'll stumble upon something good. To me it doesn't matter if that comes from my own playing, some sort of interesting sounds in my environment, other songs, or from generative AI.

Depending on what iPad you’re coming from gaming will probably be an upgrade. From my 1tb m2 12.9 it’s probably not a huge deal, but pre m1 or an 11 inch it would be a pretty huge upgrade on screen alone for games

@@DylanParisMusic ohh I forgot to mention that it is the 11” Unfortunately in Colombia the 12,9” is quite expensive. I don’t know what to expect from Apple. The M series has messed up the update policy. Will I get more updates on the M2 Air since it launched in 2024? Or the Pro model will have 2 extra years since it’s a “pro”.

So the crush thing and the number of people who got mad was weird to me, I didn't think it was as bad as they felt it. It's a common theme when they consolidate things to mash it together. Just seems sometimes people want to get mad about something. I have last years model, got it about a year ago to replace my 2018 model. I'm going to hold off for now. I was looking at the geekbench scores and i don't think I'd currently benefit from it enough to care.

The hardest thing for some people to understand is that the upgrade may not be meant for you. I have made beats plus, mixed and mastered music for over 20 years. I have also been a professional photographer for 13 years. As a musician this is not a necessary upgrade as a photographer it most definitely is and I can’t draw to save my life but I’m sure this is a hell yeah upgrade for them. So always put things in perspective. Should macOS be on the iPad yep ever since the M1 chip but, it should only be on the iPad pros as far as I’m concerned. That would justify the price point. Either that or we need desktop developers figuring out how to make their desktop software for iPadOS and they can’t say it isn’t possible. Affinity Photo for example is more Photoshop than Adobe’s Photoshop app so it can be done.

​@@DylanParisMusicI'm an artist and I want to get it, but all the artists that I've talked to says besides doing 3D sculpting digital painting doesn't use very much processing power at all. So you don't need the 16 gigs of RAM. And that was my dilemma. Hearing you say that you don't need very much processing power. I might just get the 8 gig version. I think I'll wait until next month when they announce their updates to their software at that event. Because I don't want to like spec this thing out if I can't use it for stuff that I do on my PC

Artists absolutely hate AI. I hate it myself because I'm an artist. It's just unethical that they scrape the internet and take people's work without consent. There are programs that can protect your work like glaze that puts like a filter over your work before you post it so AI can't use it and it poisons The AI. So it makes really bad art from your work. Or it can't register it and it makes something completely different.

Yes i think the 2024 air is better value with that current preschool looking crippled OS. My 2015 12.9 pro is still trundling along with its limited use...

Yep the AI is lame and not for me however I do like the sound quality of the new instruments that come with the AI and the chroma distortion plugin is nice. To call it logic 2 on the iPad is a bit of a Joke. No other functions or workflow enhancements have been made which is sad. Stem separation may be handy but only if you like to use other people music which is not really moral

More than capable apps. User needs to develop their approach and design their workflows in the ipadOS system. I have flows that work significantly better in iPad and flows that work better on Mac. Many people try to correlate to desktop and should really focus on the benefits of this environment. There are many.

@@davesnow the apps can be capable in some cases but more so than not they’re let down by storage management Or the support isn’t there compared to desktop counterparts. Final Cut and Logic Pro released for iPad and with a lot of the features they’re missing they’re unusable to justify spending that kind of money on a tablet. I have separate workflows on iPad and have always advocated their use but we’re now on iPads with m4 chips that the laptops don’t have and yet they can’t get full logic and Final Cut suites on them. Especially being subscription apps. The logic app is the reason logic 11 looks more like 10.11 because of the development to get both out at the same time and to promote the iPad m4. It’s ridiculous.

@@RobnDob I use primarily for business productivity and use side by side apps constantly. Reviewing one document while writing in another app. My other use is editing photos with Lightroom. I much prefer doing that on an iPad than on a desktop with a Wacom. I have a multitude of Shortcuts setup that make many of my workflows so much faster than a desktop. I do video calls on an iPad. I consume content on an iPad and iPhone. If I have a long document to edit, I prefer a desktop. I don’t edit a ton of video, but have done so for family videos. I prefer desktop for that. You have to know your use case. Computing devices have different use cases. iPad is extremely capable in many respects. It is not a desktop replacement just like a desktop is not an iPad replacement. It doesn’t fit into everyone’s workflow, that’s fine. However, the idea that it needs to become MacOS is misplaced. Macs already exist. I want to see evolution and great tie ins between the two, but I don’t want to see iPadOS become MacOS. The file system works for me 90% of the time, can use some more evolution to be sure.

It all depends on your use case. The iPad is not a laptop and it can do some things BETTER than a laptop and some thing’s a laptop can’t do at all. It’s kinda like listening to people who don’t like using Apple devices talk about Apple products or vice versa about Windows. Ram can and is use more in the Newest “real” AAA Games on highest settings will use around 12g Ram from what I’ve seen on other KZbinr testers and Procreate Layers for artists. But i agree, i wish more Developers would allow more usage. Possibly just in app settings like games do.

@@DylanParisMusic lol me neither. I couldn’t believe it, ran my 2018 ipad pro (got it January 2019) on coconut, its was like 95.8% battery health. I literally use every single day. They made that thing future proof. Thinking about upgrading my 2019 macbook pro tho. Only 256 or so cycles and it has like 78% battery life. Bogus. Hottest macbook pro I ever had, thing gets hot watching KZbin videos. Takes forever to render. My 2014 is better lol
