PCs have traditionally been cisc based x86 and configurable. Mac silicone computers are good if the apps are available. Windows is the most successful and widely used OS ever, doesn't mean it's the best, but for money, performance and availability it is ahead. Will MacOS ever beat it? My job entails a lot of large software builds, integrating software written in multiple languages and complex docker container compositions.I used to always pivot around a static workstation I kept in my office, always using that as the main workhorse and re-syncing anything I did on my laptop(s) back to that. But not anymore. Since I moved up to an apple silicon laptop, that quickly became the main workhorse for everything. I soon only used the desktop machine for backing things up and eventually got rid of it for even that in favor of an actual remote backup service. Having this much portable power means I can do my builds anywhere. Anywhere I am is my remote office, even when connectivity is poor. That's a huge value add for me.

The ironic thing for a a lot of Mac users is they are starting to feel they really don't need this much power. Some are still on M1 Pro, Max or Ultra systems and feel they do 100% of everything they need them to do. While this extra power is amazing and mind blowing there are also very few apps and tasks that really take full advantage of it. The important take away from all of this is that really there is no longer an advantage or disadvantage of either platform. Both are equally capable in the right hands. One does some tasks better while the other other does other tasks better. For the most part however they are both within spitting distance of each other.

Apple did this before when they worked with IBM and Motorola to make the PowerPC CPU, which was a.RISC chip. @kurt9395
@kurt9395 2 ай бұрын
@@kencollins1186 It was a bit more complicated than that. The problem was that each member of the AIM coalition had different priorities. Motorola's main focus was CPU's for cell phones which was big for them at the time. IBM's bread and butter was their server business with their PowerPC RS/6000 series. Apple was the only one using PowerPC for consumers, aside from game consoles, and given Mac marketshare, they couldn't drive the design changes that would benefit them. Intel, for their part, responded to the RISC threat with what was frankly a marketing gimmick, i.e. stretching instruction pipelines to enable higher clock speeds since most people back then associated clock speed with overall CPU performance. Annoyed that AIM's priorities were elsewhere, Steve Jobs reputedly told the CEO of Motorola, "I can't wait until we don't need you anymore." which sounds like classic Jobs. Fun fact: Apple was an early investor in ARM Holdings and used an ARM CPU in the ill-fated Apple Newton.

Thanks for this review. I have been looking around for reviews and reading lots of people comments about previous M3, M2 and M1 Macs for 3D work like Blender, Maya , Houdini and while the majority of people agreed that for rendering these M based Macs are incredible, many comments pointed out that the viewport experience of actually working with complex scenes wasn't as good as their PC machines with RTX cards. Since most of the reviews only focus on the rendering aspects of these new chips, I am wondering if it would be possible to do a test of navigating inside of a heavy scene of any of the major 3D software's. Many of the comments from people are from the past few years, so it is possible that new updates might have fixed the performance, specially with softwares like Blender that gets updated often in contrast to other softwares releases. But it would be great if we can get tests that also showcases the overall experience of how snappy the viewport is with heavier scenes. Specially since these machines are quite expensive. I really would like to make sure I am making the right purchasing decision over an Windows based laptop machine like the Asus proArt 16 that I have been eyeing for some time. Thanks for all your work. Cheers :)

If you go for cheaper case, motherboard, power supply, memory and ssd you can save around 400-500. With Mac, you get also a screen, keyboard and mouse pad. And portability. Its actually really not bad, And power usage, its awesome.

Honestly, I don't see AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA competing with Apple M4 CPUs in terms of power consumption. Reducing power consumption in any of the Intel/AMD CPUs and AMD/NVIDIA GPUs would meant detcreasing performance. Put in a couple of Apple Studios with M4 Ultra CPUs and these Macs would smoke even the fastest CPUs/GPUs when it comes to setting up a Blender render farm. :)

Not only that. Compare the die size of M chips with the chips of Intel, AMD. The difference is very very huge. Apple can earn money through software sides but Intel and AMD can't do that. That's why Intel and AMD didn't compete with m series chips with power consumption because they have to increase die size which is not economical for them.

Unfortunately the most used and professional 3d apps aren't available for MacOS: 3ds Max, Solidworks, Ansys, CATIA, Alias, Creo, Inventor, Siemens NX, Revit and D5. Many CUDA based renderers weren't converted for Metal. I think that for "heavy" compositing and video editing the Mac Book Pro is the best laptop available now but for 3d I would buy an Asus ProArt because you can plug an external gpu through the Thunderbolt port and leave the internal gpu working only for the display. I don't think you can leave a Mac Book Pro rendering for 24/7 days without melt fans, keyboard and ruin the battery. My Threadripper/Xeons/Nvidia cpus/gpus never reach 75°C while rendering 24/7. For video editing a Mac Book Pro M4 PRO is enough, the MAX version is not for 3d.

Ok, it's great for creators and I believe it. Has apple fixed the problem with how they solder in the ssd? I have heard of numerous reports that mac books will brick over time. They are built so that there is one part that has a high failure rate, and since there is no SSD protection, full battery voltage is sent to the SSD destroying all information on it. It won't even turn on since the part that is shorted has drained the whole system and destroyed the bios within the system. Not good. Until Apple releases some kind of notice that they have redesigned this, they could manufacture the best CPU in the world and I wouldn't buy it.

I can't stand Mac users sometimes. When it comes to specs, they’re quick to start trash-talking without really understanding the differences between macOS and PCs. But when I talk to PC users, they usually admit that Macs are good just with some 'buts.' Meanwhile, Mac users often trash PCs like it's some kind of competition. I don’t understand where they get that mentality; maybe they feel like they’re elite or something.
@nuxxdk
@nuxxdk 2 ай бұрын
Curious… in my experience it’s more often self professed PC users bashing on Macs for being “overpriced for their spec” - Mac users typically are just enthusiastic about their own choices seldom overly concerned with PC hardware at all. I actually can’t even recall anecdotal evidence of Mac users boasting about specs - because we all know Macs are more expensive spec vs cost wise… Mac users typically boast about battery life, usability/trackpad and real world performance figures… which are not “specs” but utility.
@kencollins1186

We get that mentality because Windows users rarely used Macs, Mac users used MacOS at home and Windows at work, so they knew what they were talking about. Ironically, Windows is a MacOS knock-off, since MacOS (then called "System") was two years old when Windows came out.

I have seen the opposite almost daily for well over a decade. Most Mac users I know pretty much keep to themselves. They tend to not be spec nerds that search for a fight. I'm not saying there may not be some out there but statistically if you look at the percentage of Windows users vs Mac users it kind of accurate to think they may be more negative Windows users bashing Macs. Just based on the sheer volume of users and how many of them are into the technical aspect of building computers and getting the most bang for the buck. A lot of Mac users may not even be able to tell you what the heck is in their machines. If you ask them they just say something like the 2019 one or whatever. What I have noticed for over a decade is just the fact that people are na coffee shop with a Mac seems to anger some PC users. Just seeing that Apple logo seems to trigger anger for whatever reason. I think they feel the users are being arrogant and elitists just by being there. It's a lot of very strange negativity. Hey I use both and it's all pointless toxic consumerism at the end of the day. People should care more about their own lives and future and not what gadgets and tools people use. To each their own.

That is the biggest problem with all newer Apple products, it's fucking amazing until it isn't. I mean for regular people not much difference, but for someone who knows their way around a PC its a problem, while chance of RAM dying is low it's never 0 and being able to replace it yourself for like 1/10th of Apple price is nice. Amazing what they did, but they took away the little repairability that was left on laptops, puff completely gone. The rest will follow their lead and soon absolutely nothing will be left that you can upgrade yourself. What you want to upgrade from 8GB RAM to 16GB? That will be 1499€.

So this comparison is kinda weird. Towards the end of the video, an M4 Max is 10-22% slower than that of a desktop equipped with an RTX 4070 in Blender. Am I the only one to notice that the 16core M4 Max is minimum $3999? And we all know that if you spec it with 64GB of RAM & 2TB SSD, you're looking at about $4900 after taxes. Building a PC with an RTX 4070 should cost around $1600, and that's what we're comparing?!? Also, did we totally forget the inherit value of x86 processors compared to ARM? (Such as, gaming, compatibility, servers, etc.) There are so many things that this video doesn't really address, and I find it upsetting that the audience watching aren't given the full scope of the picture, while on top of everything, having comparisons that favors the Apple chips. Disclaimer: I applaud Apple for their new chips. They're great for their use case scenarios,. They're power efficient. Their SoC is top-notch in the industry. However, when price is in consideration, they are slower than the competition, yet costs a lot more. They're slower than a 4080/4090, and Nvidia is planning on releasing the new 5080/5090 very soon. Why is this fact not considered in the comparison? I have no idea, but it just seems weird to me that we're comparing the recently released M4 Max chip against the RTX 4000 series GPU, which was released in Oct 2022. And not even the top of line RTX4090, which would be similar in price point.

Wait but how? I agree AMD 9000 and Intel 200 generation hasn't been all that but "X86 is dollar for dollar now about 40% behind risc/arm"?? In what world? You can build a 285K or 9950X system with an RTX 4090(which is 2 years old at this point) for much less than the cheapest M4 Max, not to mention the flexibility of upgrading parts seperately.

@ Sorry, my bad. I mean production cost and performance. Wasn’t clear with that. Apple can make an M4 for about the same price as a 9700X. Yes they choose to charge much, much more for it. But that’s because people will gladly pay for it. If it came to a price war Apple, have a load of margin they “could” sacrifice. But they don’t need to at the moment. Worse. X86 could not reach the raw performance of M chips if they wanted to. And definitely not at the power and thermals M chips run at. I maintain that unless a miracle occurs…X86 is doomed. Windows will increasingly support none X86 formats going forward.

Apple doesn't use ARM chips. They licensed the ARM instruction set and designed their own silicon around it; hence the name "Apple Silicon." If other manufacturers switch to ARM chips, without creating a system on a chip, they will still be behind. I have heard two rumors: one is that an M5 chip is impossible and the other that M5 chips are in the works. I'm betting on the latter. If there ever are M5 chips, they will be stupendous.

Their chips don't struggle with gaming, they are not made for gaming. Or should I say, there is no games made for them. As you can see in benchmarks, they are very capable chips that would beat even the best from Intel and AMD if they had compatible software. Because Apple use a completely different architecture compared to Intel, AMD or Nvidia. Every game has to be rebuilt for their architecture which is very costly for game companies, and since there isn't many gamers on Mac, it will probably not be worth it.

I feel like, what Apple created is really a small supercomputer for AI. The unified memory is a game changer when it comes to fine-tuning and loading huge models. And it is ridiculously cheap for that purpose. You can basically buy 128GB M4 Max for about 5k. So about 96 I think GB for VRAM. This is more than H100 GPU from Nvidia and for the price of a single H100, you can buy 5 MB Pros. So we are talking nearly 500GB of combined VRAM which is absolutely insane. So for the price of just $35k, you can run a 70B parameter model at full 16-bit precision. In comparison, you would need about $225k in H100 GPUs to run the same model. Sure, it would be much faster but also nearly $200k more expensive

I love how the convo shifted of Apple laptops vs. Windows laptops. Now we’re hard comparing Apple laptops to high end Windows desktops, and that will continue. Sorry to say, but that this comparison even exists is a reason to buy a Mac with a Max chip. I bought the M4 Max / 128GB / 4TB and I regret nothing, literally nothing. I have a high end windows desktop as well, and screen switch with it via KVM. I pick up my laptop and take it to work, I bike with it in a bag. From what I understand, GPUs in PCs and laptops have different specs because laptop GPUs typically run at lower TDP, clock speeds, and core counts. For those saying PCs will become obsolete, that's not the case-because Apple isn't designed for AAA game. I use a 4070 TiS in my PC primarily for gaming and editing, and a Mac for work. For laptops, I agree that Macs are better for productivity, but for gaming, I prefer PC over Mac.

And now with the M4 chips we are seeing even bigger gains in performance while still only using a fraction of the power as the competitors. It sucks that we can't have this chip in anything other than a Mac though. It's the biggest limitation with these chips, they are limited to MacOS and if your usecase or workflow doesn't go well with MacOS you can't use it.
