M4's are also particularly impressive next to M3 because they nerfed the bus width on M3, and M4 has the old layout but with way faster memory. Some context on the Geekbench ML benchmark: The Geekbench AI CPU test uses the AMX units on the Apple Silicon CPU. This is an accelerator used to speed up matrix operations, which is useful for the multiply-accumulate operations used heavily in AI inference. While the Geekbench AI NPU and GPU benchmarks are self-explanatory, I believe out of the CPU, NPU and GPU benchmarks, the GPU benchmarks carries the most weight. Although NPUs are very power efficient, they are still not as powerful as the GPU for actual heavy workloads like LLM inference, so LLMs usually still run on the GPU for maximum throughput, making their score the most relevant.

I think I can explain the performance compared to the M2 ultra: Although the M2 Ultra has TONS of cores, in order to utilize any of that the software it's running has to be built to handle that many cores. So if the software can only utilize for example 16 cores, then any number over that no matter how large will offer no boost. In fact, since in a lot of cases it's easier to have a HIGHER core speed on smaller dies, sometimes the cpu with LESS cores can win in certain apps. Where the M2 ultra would shine in that case is being able to handle other tasks while simultaneously rendering at full speed and still being able to handle other tasks without any slowdown provided there is enough RAM to also handle both.

Others have noticed that with the regular M4 Mac Mini vs M4 Pro Mac Mini. The Pro version doesn't run as hot.

So you mention towards the end of the video the best value for money is the binned version of the M4 Pro but then go on to highlight the scores of the M4 Pro, is that on purpose?

I have no idea how the M4 is the same or faster than my M1 Pro that has done everything I have asked of it for the last three years of video editing without a hiccup, but that's super cool. Just picked up the base 14" M4 512GB as a secondary and smaller laptop to my 16" M1 Pro 1TB. Sometimes you just need a smaller laptop! I'll check back in a few years when it's time to upgrade to the M6 or M7 pro, after Sony gives us an 8K FX6 III or something, then update my M1 Pro. lol Crazy times!

luke, can you test power efficiency? your channel is pretty cool as is, but another thing to make it cooler and stand out from the hundreds of youtube cinebench test channels is using a kill-a-watt and measure how much efficient/power hungry the chips are in normal workloads and under stress

3:00 I’m sorry but it’s not too hard to discover why M2 Ultra GPU underperforms so much in Blender & Cinebench. Both of those take use of hardware raytracing improvements from M3 series onward.

I feel like I understand the lackluster iPhone release now. They were laser focused and on something worthwhile.

Mac mini is the most impressive since you get the 10 core M4 for a low price. The iMac just gets the 8 core unless you pay extra. I’m interested to see the Studio get the M4 upgrade. Right now it makes no sense with the old M2.

When you're done with all the M4 hype.. please do a video about the delusional resale market ( eBay ) trying to sell older model at current model prices..

The fan noise comparison to the intel days isn't "apples to apples"...so to speak, because the performance increase is lightyears better between the two. The reality is that you are only going to hear that fan when you are pushing the SOC to the absolute limit for an extended period of time, which most users are unlikely to do routinely. This is a laptop running extreme video workflows on battery power better than the vast majority of high-end workstation machines with discrete graphics and liquid cooling....seems like our expectations may need some calibrating.

I got a M4 MacBook Pro and I for sure would rather hear the fan than thermal throttle. I'm upgrading from my M1 Air and it does not have any fans. You might laugh but honestly there is this game on Roblox called Greenville and it is very graphic intensive game ( it's a car driving game I play it since I'm in love with cars ) but my M1 Air would thermal throttle and start lagging with like 20 minutes of gameplay. Now with the M4 MacBook my game hasn't lagged and the Mac only gets warm. The fan run around 3k rpms and don't get any higher than that so I downloaded a fan control app so it runs at max speed so then the Mac stays cool and no thermal throttling.

Why adjust our expectations when the M3 Pro is extremely quiet? He's comparing it to last year's model.
@blingkey2 ай бұрын
@@teh_hunterersure it is, but it’s also not as performant and the fan profile on the M3 also allows the machine to get hotter which inevitably will have further performance fall off.

With visually intensive tasks, anything possibly beyond 4K resolution in most areas of work and play, the greater the trade offs would be for each chip type (base, pro and max). It is not a bad thing as it has improved the overall means in how they are regulated in terms time, content and intent compared to how they were before (for example, from Intel to Apple Silicon or gradually from 2018 to now). A milestone for this improvement is from the new Mac Mini M4 / M4 Pro, compared to its previous models, either from a design or component based standpoint. The only question I have is if an M4 Max counterpart to the MacBook Pro now were to be in development and considerable release, would there be absolute silence or the most minute whisper of air that could be heard if left on standby mode, for example, if you consider not only the design but the possibility of performance cores taking some time to focus on visual intensive tasks and their real time activity, similar to iPhones and iPads with screen time, and regulating performance, fan noise, etc. around that? Also surely it is a means to follow up on, at least as an adjustment or notification that I know most Apple products since Intel chipset 2018 MacBook Airs have or are capable of showing in some way.

Can you try running a local LLM on the M4 vs M4Pro? I suggest LM Studio with the following models: - Llama-3.2-3B-Instruct-4bit (MLX version) - c4ai-command-r-v01-4bit I really want to see how well the 10-core gpu holds up to the 20-core.

I still use my M1 pro laptop and its killer! Ill probably wait until the M6 MacBooks come out especially if theres a huge re-design with OLED displays
