I used to be a Vulcan gunner in the Army, having the breech end of that GE M61 cannon about 2 feet in front of your chest when you hit the button and let go with a burst was quite an experience, violent I can assure you is a good word to describe what it was like, your vision blurred and it took a second after the burst finished to be able to tell if you hit a static target or not because of the smoke that would pour out of it when it was firing, shooting at aerial targets didn't so much pose that problem since you were swinging the gun at the time but with static targets we learned to electrically lock out the gun mount and stand up instead of sitting in the gunners seat so you could see well over the cannon and smoke to watch the rounds impacting downrange, at night when we fired them a 3 foot flame would come out of the muzzle end and about a 1 foot flame would come out of the ejection port, I'd love to do it just one more time, I've been suffering from post ammo let down (PALD) since the last time I fired one in 1986.

@@Methylene. No, you misunderstood, I was a gunner on a M163A1 self propelled Vulcan gun, my job was shooting down aircraft (training for it anyways), I was not in aircraft, I was task with their destruction, my Sgt. Major was on one of the 5 Vulcans that was sent to Vietnam, he said they used them for convoy protection, they'd put one at the front of the column and one at the rear, when the convoy would come under attack he said that they would turn the jungle into tossed salad, harassment of the supply convoys dropped to zero shortly after they started using them, before the Vulcans were sent over there he was already in country on a Duster gun (twin 40MM Bofor guns on a tracked chassis), he said they would use those for firebase security, when the VC or NVA would attack they would cut loose with one barrel only that had the self destruct air defense rounds, then they would let the enemy move their mortars up to just outside the range of the self destruct rounds, then they would cut loose with the other barrel that didn't have the self destruct air defense rounds and to quote him "Turn em inside out".

@vikingraider19612 жыл бұрын
Interesting fact (well, I found it interesting...). If you look at the front of an A10, the gun appears to be slightly offset to one side. The reason is that the barrel that is firing is set to be directly in the centre of the aircraft, so the other barrels will be off to one side. This is because the recoil from that monster is so huge that, were it off to one side, it would cause the A10 to yaw when the gun was fired (damn thing had a recoil equal to the thrust of the engines).
@legoferrari142 жыл бұрын
The GAU-8 has to be fired in short bursts otherwise it will cancel out the aerodynamic lift of the A10 and cause it to plummet. That'd be like if a submarine's weapons were so powerful it'd threaten to compromise the integrity of the hull from pressure changes.
@andrewhamop66652 жыл бұрын
@@legoferrari14 Not entirely, the C revision of the A-10 included the upgraded avionics suite which has a cool little mode when you half depress the trigger. It essentially turns on a form of autopilot which compensates for the recoil when firing the main gun, basically locking your aircraft onto whatever you were targeting when the trigger is half depressed. Source: I fly the A-10 in DCS: World, which is a 1:1 arial combat sim.
@fischlimonade2 жыл бұрын
@@andrewhamop6665 The GAU-8 is still really inaccurate at normal combat range even with that upgrade which is why precision bombs and missiles have accounted for a huge majority of the A10's kills throughout its service life.

Maybe more spread is required, grouping is too tight. Other than that it's the sound of victory
@Niitroxyde2 жыл бұрын
It was designed to take out armored vehicles. So less spread is better, you want to repeatedly punch that armor until it breaks out. One shell probably won't be enough, but a few hundreds in a couple of seconds, definitely. Even though a plane is moving and shaking, so I doubt the grouping would actually be the same as in a firing range environment anyway. Not to mention you'd fire it from hundreds of meters away in a combat scenario, not a 50m range. You can see it later in the video when they fire it from the actual plane. The spread is much more pronounced.

What's cool about watching most of these clips is that you usually hear two sets of bursts. The first one you hear is actually the rounds hitting the ground or target. The second, quieter, smoother one you hear is from the gun firing. In most cases, cameras and microphones are much closer to the target than they are to the plane, so it takes longer for the sound from the plane to get to the microphones.

An interesting effect going on here with the A10s cannon. Since sound travels at the speed of sound and you can hear the bullet splashes hitting the ground before hearing the sound of the gun firing is proof that those rounds from the A10s cannon are travelling way over the speed of sound since the sound from the bullets hits our ears before the sound of the gun.

My grandpa told me about one of his experiences in the Vietnam War when he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army (the only story he has ever told me, he doesn't talk about about it to anyone) when he was captain of a patrol boat, and had been ambushed by VC forces. He called in Puff the Magic Dragon, AKA a C-130 gunship mounted with a 20mm Vulcan, 40mm Bofors and a 120mm Howitzer. He said the targets were only a hundred yards or so away when the Vulcan started singing, and as the plane flew overhead it rained 20mm casings down on them and their boat. A couple soldiers were injured by 200+mph shell casings (the shells not having enough time to decelerate to terminal velocity from the plane's 3-400mph velocity), and there were were dents and dings all over the boat afterward. He said it was needless to tell everyone to take what cover there was. The ambush problem was solved though, a plane with a gun in its side flying circles like a predatory bird is kind of hard to avoid lol. Shitty situation, awesome gun.

@leosypher99936 жыл бұрын
No, its ment as an anti material round, not for sniper, in its class of anti matirial rifles its actually very small, but modern warfare doesnt need large anti matirial rifles like in the world wars, so the .50 bmg makes for a light versatile anti matirial rifle that can be carried around, but people seem to worship the .50 cal due to what they think it a HUGE round, but it really isnt, there was a rifle that shot the same rounds as this valken. For an example of a good sniper rifle, take a look at an m40, or even better an l96, 7.62 nato, a round that packs a punch and is managable enough to be accurate, and not give away the sharpshooter's position, plus you can carry more ammo
@leosypher99936 жыл бұрын
All of this and a 20mm can be a 1 hit mutable kill if aimed properly
6 жыл бұрын
.50 can hit an engine in a car and knock it clean out, it can hit an engine of a small aircraft and take it out. It's main purpose is not for killing humans. There's a reason why so many people in the military use a .223 or 5.56. That's all you need to kill a human in 1 or 2 shots. .308 and above are for greater distances and typically used by snipers.
@panthera81156 жыл бұрын
Depends on the enemy, when theres a enemy with good armor, i would prefer 7,62mm. But yes, 5,56mm is more than enough for most cases and the best ammo at the moment for our soldiers.

FYI last time the Air Force publicly disclosed the price of the rounds used in the GAU-8 it they were $137 a piece - meaning emptying the magazine (about 14-15 seconds of total firing time though you can't fire bursts longer than about 2 seconds because it will stall the aircraft) costs about $160k.

the sound is delayed because of speed of sound, how do you not know this? Also, the first sound is the shells hitting the ground and the humming sound after is the gunfire. However, note that this will also happen with most autocannons that have supersonic ammunition.

The scariest thing is that you won't even hear it until it's too late. I can only imagine the fear felt by the enemies knowing that thing is up in the sky

villen that's the point ;-)

villen the crackles you hear first are the brass exploding on the target, than obviously the sound of the warthog from where it came from comes after. The world's a scary place when you're fighting. Won't even hear it before it's too late.

Martin L, the Warthog is pretty slow compared to most jets, too. It was designed to loiter over a battlefield. It can take quite a beating and keep flying. It is at the end of its service life. It was used in the Gulf wars and worked well. I suspect it is harder to hit than you expect because it flies so low for much of its work.

But what if we loaded it with #2 gauge shotguns shells with buckshot loaded? Think of the possibilities....

JJP 007 THE GREAT MEME WIZARD Oh my... Just imaging how well that would work against infantry. They would be swiss cheese.

Bryce Peters Indeed. Pity dragonfire shells are to short range for use... hmmm.... delay activation using a proxi-fuse so the magnesium doesn't light till it is within effective range of the target?

JJP 007 THE GREAT MEME WIZARD Well, magnesium does burn hotter when exposed to water, and humans are about 70% water.. Interesting ideas. Would need some testing.
