I feel like Ma is such a realistic villain. Driven by trauma she begins to enact her revenge. She doesn’t do anything that doesn’t make sense, she keeps her daughter home in fear of her suffering the same trauma she did at her age. And she just wants to have a normal high school experience so she gets it in with the teenagers at the local high school pretending to be one of them. This movie made me cry and it wasn’t undeserved it was so tragic seeing sue-Ann fall down a dark path due to past trauma inflicted upon her at to young an age.
@CarassiusAu11 ай бұрын
Honestly, it would’ve been somewhat a bittersweet/wholesome story if Ma had just normally partied with the kids and kept it at that
@msjkramey10 ай бұрын
@@CarassiusAunah, that would have just been a different type of thriller. I have a younger sibling that is still in high school while I'm almost 30, and it would be creepy af if I tried to party with him and his friends. This woman is old enough to be their parent so that's even worse. I went to a house party once the summer after I graduated high school and the dad was home hitting on drunk kids. Absolutely disgusting behavior
@NotoriousFoxxx5 ай бұрын
I see opposite. Its so ridiculous to me. Unrealistic as ever
@Emma-fr9id4 ай бұрын
Honestly, it's what makes her so UN realistic to me - I was intensely bullied during my school years in many of the ways that Ma does in this movie (blackmail, psychical bullying, coercion, mental bullying, sexual assault) and I can't imagine ever wanting to do that to someone else. Let alone graduating to straight up torture/murder. On people who weren't even alive at the time! If you've gone through stuff like that, even if you're the least empathetic person in the world, doing stuff like that to others just feels so distasteful. I hate that whole "hurt people hurt people" shtick - because myself and a lot of my friends chose to do the opposite, precisely BECAUSE we had been hurt. It's still a good movie, but if I think too hard about Ma's motivations the whole thing falls apart for me. (plus it's like not even revenge bc the kids weren't the ones who did it to her)

Fun Fact: Octavia Spencer only said yes to being in this movie on the condition that her villain would be given a sympathetic backstory and at some level they gave her one which doesn't condone her actions but helps you understand them. Arguably The core of the story is about how the past sins of the previous generation can negatively affect the current one. And also acknowledging that parents aren't perfect people. The real tragedy of the titular MA was that she never really grew up mentally after what happened to her, and fearing that her daughter would have the same troubling high school experience (And admit it, most people's high school experiences sucked and every parent's worst fear is their kids repeating their past mistakes or screwing up their lives in some way), it makes sense why she'd want to shelter her own child but was too stuck in her head to realize how much the world and by-extension people have changed. But at the end of the day, most of these adults who were killed were terrible people who either never really respect the privacy of their kids or never regretted their past actions enough to be mature or better people, thereby making them easy to hate enough to see them die with a small sense of wish-fulfillment.
@CYMotorsport Жыл бұрын
You couldn’t confidently say the movie is about past transgressions. The film isn’t sharp enough to address it as a payoff. Your conclusions are mere educated assumptions. Key word educated. Hence my frustration. I think you’re right, but I’m not giving the film credit for that. They chose to not address it. The set up was superb. But it’s clear to me atleast that this movie’s third act had a straight razor taken to it. The trouble with that is it rests on its laurels so to speak with a very clever 1&2 acts hoping we don’t ask questions and just fill in the blanks. But there’s no real way to cleanly write that. It’s a bad film imo bc the character isn’t written to reflect complex emotions and negotiate how you could possible take a position on how rape justifies murder. Im being crass to cut through but you indeed need to walk that tight rope. To say the movie is “about that” lets a pretty poor 99 minute off the hook when it just as well could have been a pretty phenomenal 115 or so minute movie.but those 10-15 minutes were the most important part. A good contrast imo is something like The Orphan. Not perfect but my point is to address your set ups of a painful backstory, your character is going to have to be capable of such sick shit. Hence the ham fisted strip nude scene. I do think Scotty was aware the character does not display what would be required of her to later be aligned to actions she’d have to take to satisfy the payoff of acts 1 and 2. In the orphan we see a character who literally doesn’t even blink dishing out violence. Even Ma’s kills are removed of anything too personal and up close. An injection, a car, etc. and if the objection is well she’s meant to be a “normal” person not a clinical sociopath, I’d say 1. I’m not even so sure about that clinical part but 2. It would be the most unbelievable aspect of the whole film then to expect the audience to believe she’s a well balanced individual who also kidnaps, sexually assaults, and murders . For someone with such convictions to hatch this plan, she sure struggled to really do anything to anyone not already written in a way that felt easier to ignore the whole revenge theme. You proved that exact point already stating how the adults were written in a way you’re okay with them dying. Thats my point. It wants its cake and to eat it too and for that it gets nothing - as deprived as this script was from actual 3rd act meat & potatoes.
@msjkramey10 ай бұрын
@CYMotorsport you can "function" and still be dealing with trauma, still be dealing with revenge fantasies. I was 14 when I was r*ped and I became su*cidal and constantly fantasized about provoking the guy into killing me so that I didn't have to end it myself and he would also go to jail. Meanwhile, I was also a leader in my community and I earned a prestigious scholarship, but it was also the beginning of the end. The longer I didn't address it, the more the cracks began to show. Never did the revenge thing, but I did start drinking really heavily, lost my scholarship, and tried to end it all more than once. Ended up in a coma for 3 days and I almost died, which was traumatic in itself. I had to relearn how to feed myself, how to walk again. You'd never know any of that looking at me, but I have to deal with that every effing day. But tell me all about how r*pe doesn't feel like it justifies m*rder. (I don't think an eye for an eye is okay, but I know how it feels to want it all too well)
