Markie was one of the worst characters I'd ever seen in a movie. She literally spent the entire thing complaining and was just a terrible friend in general. She forced her best friend to go on a vacation with her instead of letting her do something she legitimately wanted to do. She got mad at Olivia for getting a dare (that she didn't even pick) to sleep with her boyfriend. Why should she even care? It was revealed earlier that she was a constant cheater, so the fact that she was mad at Olivia made her a hypocritical idiot. I just wanted to slap her every time she was on screen. I was annoyed that she was one of the few people that lived. Even with the dead father plot line, she was too terrible of a character for any sympathy.

I love that the movie “Smile” took the concept of a creepy smile and actually made a good movie out of it. The filmmakers’ instincts here weren’t wrong- weird and uncanny smile is scary in the right circumstances.

I agree, and the fact it gave it an R-rated tone to fit in well with the brutal psychological horror setting unlike Truth or Dare. Hell, I think Smile did an amazing job to give us the audience the view of the protag’s paranoid mind when facing the smiling entity, even have it surprise us at unexpected moments. It gets to the point that we don’t feel “safe” once we’re looking the protag’s eyes.

The characters and story were so strong that the hokey cult movie climax felt a little dopey and took me completely out of the whole thing. Another good example of a horror film where characters clearly felt greif instead of just acting like nothing happened is The Witch.

I was thinking that but I don't think it would work. the order is Demon, Olivia, Maggie. The next possible combos are 1. Olivia (truth), maggie (forced dare cuz the demon picked truth already), demon (truth cuz unless forced, will always pick truth to avoid being dared to stop.) 2. Olivia (dare), Maggie (truth or dare, doesn't matter), demon (truth), Olivia( if maggie picked truth, she would be forced to dare, and if dare was picked she can pick truth and force maggie to do a dare.) I thought about them doing this but there isn't a way for them to win unless they can trick the demon to technically lie, or reveal the truth that will help them to survive this game. Other than that, they can just kill themselves and end the game there since if they're both dead, the game will probably end.

Pretty interesting arc Brad went through even if it ended tragically. Even if she could aim the gun at Olivia again to reattempt she was pinned down by the guys and there was no real way for her to break free so the demon possessed her and made her kill herself.

I mean, to be fair: considering this movie started with "Oi! Make a movie based around Truth or Dare!.............that is all" I'd say it's actually not that bad. Oh it's definitely not good, there's been LOTS of better movies to come out of Blumhouse. But seriously, they were given literally a title and told to make something out of it. Given how very little they were offered to work with when they were told to make this movie, I'd say the get an A for Effort purely because they were able to make any semblance of an actual story/movie out of this. But that A for Effort combines with my original impression of this movie to average out to a B-. Above average based purely on the whole "making something from nothing" angle. Before this video told me the behind-the-scenes story of how this movie came about, I had given it a solid C. Just as James said: "meh all around."

I think what they were trying to go for with the ending is Olivia’s altruism hitting its limit, and her finding that she couldn’t go through with what she needed to do. I’m not saying it was handled well, but I think there was a solid concept there

I think that there is a much smarter ending than sacrificing millions of people. by her making the demon enter the game as a player, they could have used that to force the demon into a dare that could seal it back up since now that it had a turn, it was part of the game in more than just the one asking truth or dare... oh well.

I was thinking that but I don't think it would work. the order is Demon, Olivia, Maggie. The next possible combos are 1. Olivia (truth), maggie (forced dare cuz the demon picked truth already), demon (truth cuz unless forced, will always pick truth to avoid being dared to stop.) 2. Olivia (dare), Maggie (truth or dare, doesn't matter), demon (truth), Olivia( if maggie picked truth, she would be forced to dare, and if dare was picked she can pick truth and force maggie to do a dare.) I thought about them doing this but there isn't a way for them to win unless they can trick the demon to technically lie, or reveal the truth that will help them to survive this game. Other than that, they can just kill themselves and end the game there since if they're both dead, the game will probably end. With the order they have, the demon will never be forced to do a dare.

I don't think that Olivia's arc is to choose to be selfish over the needs of everyone else - we're shown she does that from the beginning. She could back out on her friends after they sabotage her Habitat trip, but she doesn't. She telegraphs being a good person in the original round of Truth or Dare, but as it goes on we see that at almost every turn she acts in her own self interest over being honest to help out the situation. Nobody who was truly selfless would have even had the idea to share it to everyone to effectively send the world spiraling into madness. It's not the best movie, but I think it's internally consistent with its logic and that's not the worst thing to be able to kick back with and enjoy on a lazy afternoon.

Yeah, I found her to be similar to the main character of Unfriended, where she puts on a very selfless facade and acts affronted by others' bad choices. But in the end we find out her morality isn't so strong and she's only gonna look out for herself. I still don't really like the movie, but I think the characterization makes sense.
