I liked that they didnt go too much into race. Speaking from someone who used to be the token black girl, it gives a little bit of dimension into why they treat her they way they do. Maybe some fellow token black people can agree, sometimes you questioned your friends motives when they did something out of pocket. It made you wonder if they treated her that way because she was the only black girl, or if it was just because she was awkward and nerdy. I liked that it wasn't blatantly in your face.

The most disturbing and scariest part of this movie is how this could really happen!! Kids just want to party with no thought of their safety. There are some real dangerous people out there that would take advantage of kids like this. “MA” brought back that 80s horror/slasher film with a 21st Century twist. I haven’t seen the vengeful killer from High school since “Prom Night”.

This film was fun, but man that trailer gives away so much of the film. I'm also realizing how much cinematography can elevate a simple premise. This film and even the Intruder would have benefitted from being shot and edited in more interesting ways. Thanks for the insight and the laughs.

I love that it doesnt need racism to sell this....To be honest I am tired of real life racism and I dont need my movies getting bogged down by it too. Even talking about racism often separates us into groups of color....It never leads anywhere good. So in my opinion I am glad they dont really care about the racial shit. They are focused on a story plot and not a political view.

Haven't seen the movie (prolly atteam it) but i knew there would be some racial elements/themes in it. I know this may sound a bit too deep but i always felt this was sort of a twisted subversive take on the mammy stereotype looking at the trailer alone. Like Ma(mmy) not seeming to have a life of her own, no relationships always around white people and not looking like what majority of society considers as physically attractive

Before I watch the review, I want to say I'm glad Octavia is getting roles that aren't usually played by Black women. But it's not realistic. I don't see some young white kids hanging out with a middle-age Black woman. If she was influencing one person, okay, but a two or three I don't think so. I think one of hem would've said, why you want to hang around an old ass Black lady. Somebody would've been racist in the group.

The racial issue fitted well because we can assume that that was part of the reason Sue Ann got bullied 30 years ago but nowadays it's not that relevant, the black kid in the group is just another kid. I think there is a contrast between Sue Ann's generation and this new generation. The innocent girl is not that innocent, the popular girl is not that popular or mean at all, the good looking kid is not a jock or a douche... so it feels out of nowhere because Sue Ann still holds that resentment without realising times have changed.

I disagree with little bit on this. Because the movie was entertaining; The overall tone of it was creepy and dark. kind of disturbing. AS much as I loved Octavia Spencer's performance in this movie. She's great at vibe that she's not the one you wanna double-cross. She comes nice, sweet, and her intentions my seem innocent. But you can really tell that something dark and sinister lays waiting beneath the surface. They kept hinting at that something more terrible happened besides the blow incident. I feel disappointed they didn't explore that more, nor give any explanation on her daughter and husband. But disappointed she did all this and only killed one person. yeah, It's not a low matinee. It's a low rental for me. Even with the great performance of Octavia Spencer for me. It was still lacking a little bit in some areas to me and so it's a low Rental.

People think the idea of community is more democratic. It isn’t. The less amount of people who have thd ability to have power the more reactionary and tribal. That’s why small businesses actually suck you have little musolinis running small shitty little businesses all throughout the country. They could be co-ops. People think the ussr didn’t have markers. It did. It’s just that the ussr has a central plan. Anyway point is small towns are reactionary right wing. Big cities are far more inclusive the bigger the better. That’s why it’s the federal government that right wingers hate so much, it’s the power to enforce rules for everyone not allow places like Alabama to continue being disgustingly racist cesspools for example

Couldn't tell if this was supposed to be a comedy or not. Cause these teens are almost caricatures of teens in horror movies

Ok: so first off, the main draw to this movie is its trailer which when seen by any horror fan in particular will have them queuing to see this. Now, the premise to this movie set up brilliantly in the trailer is just extraordinary and the potential of OMG! what is this crazy Ma character capable of? - goes into overdrive again heavily fuelled by the trailer. Now, theres no other way of saying this but this movie is an incoherent shambolic mess. The horror elements and the gore elements are just thrown in there for the hell of it without being plausible embroidered into the movie. What motivates Ma to do what she does is a bit far fetched. Wot? She got pissed off just because of that? Really? It would appear that the script was written over-night, I mean the writing & the way things are just willy-nilly thrown in there kind of beggars belief. Its like someone puts a whole load of ingredients into a liquidiser but the lid wasn`t placed on properly & then when the ONswitch gets turned on, the shit goes everywhere with us the viewers going WTF! The writing & execution of this movie is such an incoherent mess, it beggars belief.I can`t believe that before its release, Octavia Spencer didn`t call an emergency meeting, thump her first on a boardroom table & demand re-shoots or someone to fix this movie because after-all, she is the face of Ma. This movie is really an insult to remarkable exceptionally talented actress Octavia Spencer turning her into a cartoonish laughable charter having her do crazy bad-ass stuff just for the sake of cheap laughs. As I said, the premise of what could`ve/should`ve been a edge of your seat nerve-jolting terrifying movie turns out to be horror for the sake of horror, gore for the sake of gore turning Octavia Spencer into a cartoonish character along the lines of the house-keeper in those Tom & Jerry cartoons And it screams the question How can this be? with supposed experienced talented writers who write movie scripts for a living in Hollywood. There is also some plagiarism elements from other movies in there also, mainly Fatal Attraction where Diana Silvers returns home to find Octavia Spencer sitting down having tea with Juliette Lewis, identical to when Michael Douglas returns home to find Glenn Close having tea with his wife And three plagiarisms from Steven King Misery also where ornaments are moved, a police man calling to the door and a guy restrained on the bed. Now, the character development in this movie is fantastic: this movie really takes its time and effort in developing those characters even the supporting cast And superb exceptionally credible performances also by everyone including the supporting bit part cast, and the chemistry between the high school kids is superb also. Alison Janny delivers a hilarious bit part cameo. Luke Evans is bit part extremely credible But a standout has to be from Juliette Lewis. Back in the 90s Juliette Lewis was labelled a Shit for brains actress who only got movie parts because she took her tits out, I was completely and utterly gobsmacked at just how extraordinary amazing Juliette Lewis was in this movie; I mean My God, she totally went for it. This movie is entertaining in a ludicrous comedy horror sort of way but its just extremely disappointing that its gonna end up being nothing more than a flash in the pan forgettable movie instead of a horror classic it potentially could`ve been if a bit more thought & effort had gone into it. [5/10]

I don’t know if it’s cause I’m not a Horror fan like my friend that dragged me to it, but this was a straight Comedy film for me. All the way through.
