I thought the ball needs to be thrown vertical up from the non-serving hand. It looks like Ma Long directs the ball towards his body. I guess that is legal.

Serves are very good. Low and spinny on the initial bounce. But I notice that the spin doesn't hold. If you notice, on certain serves the ball starts to turn but doesn't complete the turn and simply continues to bounce off the end of the table. That means the spin isn't holding up and the ball becomes no spin. That also means the spin isn't as strong as it seems to be from the service motion. Then again, he could be doing it on purpose to fool the opponent.

Consider though that the ball is served low over the net, and is returned after the second bounce, not after the fifth or sixth bounce.

The smaller turn simply means there is more side spin and less "corkscrew" spin. Side spin is still there, so it will bounce crazily of the rubber. Side spin=effect. Corkscrew=trajectory

It is because of the plastic ball... All new ABS type have a really grippy surface... The consequence: the ball lose all spin on the first baunces and then totally lose the spin... Therefore the first baunces, with spin ,have a heavy curve and jumps very high(Spin get converted in speed)... I tested it with balls like dhs D40+ and nittaku Sha ... (Both chinese Abs I guess) the old dhs 40+ or nittaku premium 40+ don't have this property...

I've been studying a lot of serve technique n stuff for the past months and recently thought a lot about this kind of spin although I didn't know the correct term for it yet. I just thought corkscrew is a different name for topspin + sidespin so I never explored it more. But this makes a lot of sense. I've been explaining it for myself basically that you can put on topspin in two different directions on the ball or two diferent axes. The one is straight forward so the axis of the ball goes from yourself to your opponent in a straight line. (side spin). The other axis is in a 90° angle to the former, so basically along the net which ML does (corkscrew). I think Ovtcharov does it too just in the other direction with his backspin serve cuz it's the same mix of top + sidespin again.
