And others might play over their inherent 'capacity' as well. Ma long is quite simply the best, most clutch player we have ever seen. Its absolutely incredible Hes won everything imaginable. 3 Straight top events. Triple crown winner. Been on the national team since he was a young teenager. I love Waldner, Liqin, Kong, Wang, but to me, Ma Long is the best.

Ma Long literally began his career when Ma Lin, Wang Liqin, and Wang Hao were at their peak. He’s also the last Chinese to play against Waldner in an international competition. He was in the CNT long before Xu Xin and Zhang Jike were even heard of while at the same time he’s still in better shape than Xu Xin and Zhang Jike.

Ma's game is just too tight, he gives you so few loose balls to do anything with and is so aggressive. Plus with superior footwork he's just almost never out of position, you really have to be great for consecutive games to even have a chance.

Having initiative is still important, it's just that countering is way more effective than it was with the celluloid. Ma Long opening with spinny loop on barely half-long or even short balls is very hard to deal with especially when you know he's ready to rip 5th or 7th ball right away.

The only player in my opinion that can potential deal with the beast mode Ma Long is ZJK in his prime. ZJK's amazing backhand drive and his physical game near the table were what gave Ma Long so much trouble. ZJK and Ma Long are the two best players I've ever seen.

@@david0ade They can give the normal ML some trouble but not the beast mode ML. Liam is too tall and lacks the agility. Harimoto lacks of the pace control and squats power. Even one of the other best backhand players like Dima lacks the speed of covering. ZJK was almost perfectly built for a strong backhand player. He was a powerful player with good speed and techniques.

Interestingly, Ma displayed a much broader style with more variants instead of only topspin attacks. That was the key in the 2nd set and resulted in Hugo losing his confidence almost completely afterwards. Although Hugos style heavily depends on dominating the opponent, he invited Ma to drive the game. And Ma drove it with his mental and, finally, physical strength. It’s still a long way to go for Hugo to beat Ma Long in a World Championship game. Especially if Ma adds even more variants into his portfolio like all legends did who managed to play on a world top level for decades.

Ma Long took care of a potentially very difficult opponent, who when he gets hot makes incredible shots. He made it look easy but it wasn't. Ma spun the ball slowly when needed, dialed down the power. When Calderano gets a bit desperate and starts shooting wildly at times, Ma has it won, as Calderano will go for balls he has no chance to make, so a freebie point.
