I understand maaco and their reputation for low quality cheap paint jobs but they exist for a reason. There's a market for it. There are so many 20 year old Hondas with sun peeling paint that could use this and they would look 1000x better. It's not meant to impress anyone. I think they do good work *FOR THE PRICE* the car looks good overall.

Not just Honda. I seen a butt load of GM from the 90's that have peeled like a banana and could use a paint job like that.

@Laserlite 3000 Its well known about the Honda paint recall. And yes in cali with the sun, alot of 8th gen civics peeled before 100k miles. Some within 2 years of being new. My RBP sedan had peeling clear and crows feet at 60k!! And i work in a body shop & take care of my paint! Unacceptable. Even worse is mine is 3 stage & dark blue. Very hard to color match
@theejoeylee5 жыл бұрын
@Laserlite 3000 depends on if you know a "guy" that works at a body shop & will work on it after hrs. I saw that all the time at my shop. And you can get a good paint job under 4500, just depends on how greedy your painter is. Body work is extra of course

As a former Maaco painter at 3 different locations in my let me say a few things ..... Don’t ever pay for the “uv protection packages” we never did any extra anything at any of the 3 locations I worked at . You essentially are throwing money away . Don’t waste your money on “integrated clearcoat” it’s bs . We added a 1/2 pint to a pint of clear to the single stage paint . What does this do ? Stretches the already cheap and barely there paint for one more coat . We used an average of 3-4 pints of paint for an all over repaint . This is NOTHING if you desire any sort of reliability and longevity . At most locations if you bitched about the color change fee , you can get it waived , this is true esp in instances like the video , with multiple existing colors . We sealed every car , so a color change is a moot point , and again money wasted And last , “sanding” consists of running some 320 on a DA over heavy chips and scratches and using a red scotch brite on the remainder of the car - hardly sanding I would not recommend this for a car you plan on keeping. This is perfect for something you would like to sell, or a quick accident repair. Otherwise there are much better options. Even learning to do it yourself you can get a better job
@austinkilla_hunter73335 жыл бұрын

I've done some fill-in paint work at a Maaco type paint shop and I can attest to all of this. Get it in, get it done, get it out. I actually got a bit of crap from the shop owner for using "too much material" spraying some old big buick. It was already some cheap thin 2k urethane, splashed some cheap MS clear in with it, and I put down three coats instead of two, because it still looked shitty and had no gloss after two coats (Thanks to cheap material) I tried to explain that if they used good products, 2 coats would have been fine. I'm glad I got away from that kind of paint work. All of the painters that I talked to that do that kind of work long term have ZERO pride in their work. They don't care if your paint peels in 3 months, they don't care if they cut your trim with a razor blade, they don't care if they leave a huge run at the bottom of the door because "Nobody will see that" (True story)

The place I was at, customers have brought their own clear coat. There was like a half gallon of some pretty good Deltron HS clear, I asked about it. The owner said a customer "Gave" it to them, and they only use it on certain stuff. I had a strong feeling they took the products, but just saved them for later and sprayed the cheap shit. There was also like a gallon of some Valspar 999 basecoat (Really good stuff, not exactly cheap) Same story, apparently the customer "gave" them that basecoat. I have a feeling they sprayed their cheap colour and kept his. They were spraying some trashy "Pro star" basecoat that was junkkk.

I worked at Maaco 5 years ago, they can do good work, depends on who you get and what sort of time we were allocated to a particular car. Our painter was an awesome young 20-something who was extremely dedicated to his craft and put out flawless work on every panel he sprayed, the odd time there’d be a contaminant, it would go back out to me to be stripped then back into the booth. We put out some great finished products, again all depending on what was being done and how much you were paying for it. Keep in mind it goes through the hands of 5 or so separate people during the paint process: someone on disassembly, someone on sanding and filling (me at the time), someone on masking and taping, someone on paint, and someone on reassembly. The phrase “too many cooks spoil the repair” was sometimes appropriate.
@sfcmp70052 жыл бұрын
You bring up a good point. There are many people handling your car during the process. So that means the quality you get can be limited to the weakest link. I had my car done and feel I was lucky. I think all of the links in the process of my car were pretty solid. I am very impressed with the final product. I know what my car looked like when I brought it in. My family was very surprised as they thought it looked like a new car, and not like a ten year old car that was painted. The Maaco I went to gave me those results. But you are definitely limited to the talent of each person who handles your car. In my case I feel all departments did a great job. I had a lot that needed to be done so, I cannot complain at all. I am now very proud to drive in my car again. I even got a complement from someone the other day. They too thought the paint job was superb, and they didn't know it was just repainted.

I take new, pre-primered panels to Maaco, just one at a time usually. Practically impossible to screw up, no overspray to worry about and quick as hell.
@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism3 жыл бұрын
I recently learned how to paint cars myself. After doing two of my own, I have major respect for what Maaco does for under 1 grand. Yes, I did the repairs and body work myself, to a level far and beyond what they do, but it took many, many, many, many hours, like 100+ hrs to get it right. Yes, I used base and clear and better than the cheap single stage they use and yes, my materials ALONE, cost more than their whole paint job cost, but unless you have a nice classic car that you care about, most cars that need a paint job are 15+ years old and beaters by then, so for those, a Maaco paint job is better than driving peeling clear coat or surfaced rusted panels around. A "real" paint job is going to cost you thousands of dollars or it's going to cost you hundreds of hours of work yourself and hundreds of dollars in materials. Then you need to learn all the grits to use for sanding, when to use them, what materials to spray, how to mix them, how to spray them, then how to wet sand, how to buff and wax and all those tools to make it happen. For what you get for under a grand, dollar for dollar, It would take a multi thousand 5 grand plus paint job to equal the value. The car has to be worth that too, not just a regular, common daily driver.
@thardyryll Жыл бұрын
Well said. Yours is the most insightful and accurate comment here. The flaws in the car shown in the vid are trivial compared to the overall appearance. Not having seen a Maaco job in years - they and competitors were horrible - this one is amazingly good. As for doing it yourself, you are exactly right. My minivan was rear-ended 10 years ago and I lucked out: insurance totaled the van (a ‘99 Dodge). They gave me $4,600 (the van had cost me $1,500), I bought it back for $600 and fixed it for $800, including paint, supplies, a used rear hatch and $200 to a body shop to pull the bumper area back into shape so the hatch would properly latch. Yes, I cleared $3,200, but the job was a huge amount of work prepping, sanding, masking, spraying primer, base, pearl and clear coat. A Maaco single-stage doesn’t involve all that, of course, but the result in this case is actually amazing - and probably a better job than 90 percent of those done in a house garage by a first-timer.

You are so, so much nicer than me. There's a big difference between paying someone $500 to paint your car and paying someone to overspray like crazy, do really iffy prep work and manage to miss noticeable areas. I don't necessarily have a problem with Maaco's work. They're a low-rent outfit that does a low-rent job, and if you just need the thing to be one color so you can dump it on Craigslist, that's what you'll get. What I have an issue with is Maaco pushing the idea that for $500, your car is going to look good as new. What they should do is say to everyone who wants that special, "Look, in order to give you that price, we have to literally drag guys in off the street, put a paint gun in their hands, give them $10 an hour and tell them to try not to paint the driver's seat, so you'll get your $500 paint job, but it's gonna have overspray, missed spots and iffy prep work." But, I mean, if they told you what was really going on, no one would go there, so...

Aside from that have only replaced one power antenna ($89) in the past 29 years!, those 4-bangers go 300-400k easily all day long. I have a funny story about a crown vic. I was at a car wash getting my truck clean when a relatively stock looking Crown Vic rolled up but sounded like a monster. My friend who was with me thought it was straight piped but I knew there was more to the car than just loud pipes. So I went over and asked the driver what he had done to it and with a grin the stretched ear to ear he popped the hood. Supercharged 5.4 GT500 motor swap, Custom Intake, Custom exhaust, and just an amazing amount of detail like chrome and paint matching in the engine bay. Said the entire build costed roughly 20k and said the most expensive part was the paint job. It was a special blue like Shelby Blue or something but that car was done so perfectly it looked almost factory.

I have a 2006 Grand Marquis that I want to get repainted the original color. If it doesn't rain tomorrow I think I will wash it and take it to Maaco to get it started. For what you paid you can't complain. Maaco paint jobs can be pretty good or pretty bad..... 2 years ago I had my 2011 CV fixed, had the pass. rear quarter pulled out, rear bumper cover replaced, hole in trunk fixed, half moons on doors fixed front bumper slots fixed. Car was about 1/3 repainted in matching silver. $1800. by a small town body guy. I'm very happy with it and it only has 82,000 miles and 1690 idle hours on it today. Auction price was $2400 out of Washington State. Now the PROBLEM, Washington State DOL Totals and takes back the titles on many cars that are slightly damaged including police cars. I took the car and brought it back to Minnesota figuring no big deal, but it was!! Two years later I think I have the problem solved here in Minnesota and I'm looking forward to having a Minnesota title soon. If a car is on a website from Washington State and it says Totaled, title returned to state, leave it alone no matter how good it looks. I did get tabs and was able to drive the car legally in Minnesota, I hope to have a legal title soon!!
@glenngoetz30544 жыл бұрын
It was soon after my original post that I did finally receive a clean Minnesota Title for the car. It did involve pictures as it was when I bought it and pictures after I had the body work done. I also had to get more documentation from the City of Bellevue Washington on the history of the car. Thanks to Paul Bergeron, Fleet Administrator, and the Bellevue legal team for getting this to a point where Minnesota would accept it!

However my car was white so that helps, but I live where it is 100+ degrees most of the summer and the car was never in a garage so it held up to well for the abuse.

I had my 1965 Chrysler painted at Maaco in 1994, after an accident repair (welded new qtr panel on). I did all prep work myself (sand & fill). I got the better 2-part polyurethane for a half-off winter special, $250. No extra charges. Looked fine w/ no noticeable runs though I did find a hair in the paint (must look close). Paint still looks fine and shiny 28 years later, even after parked outside 6 years in Atlanta (mostly indoors or covered since in sunny CA). Paints have gotten worse since due to environmental regs, so your results may vary. Had to repaint 2 doors after 2 crashes (driver's door - I beat out & body filled, used door for right rear after big buck ran into it). I had noted the paint code used and bought matching base-clear locally and painted those doors off myself. One door I painted off-car horizontally to avoid runs but mistake since the metallic flakes settled differently so appears a different color in strong sunlight. Stuff will happen to your car, so will never be perfect after the first week new.
