Widely acclaimed as one of the finest actors in the history of Indian cinema, he is considered a cultural icon and holds a matinée idol status in the Kannada diaspora,among whom he is popularly adulated as Nata Saarvabhouma (emperor of actors), Bangarada Manushya (man of gold), Vara Nata (gifted actor) and Rajanna (elder brother, Raj) . He was honoured by Padma Bhushan Award in 1983.

Infact Dr.Rajkumar was the original composer to the song 'Naadamaya' from the movie 'Jeevana chithra', also This 'Maanikya veena' a sanskrit song from the movie 'Kavirathna kaalidaasa' When 'Kavirathna Kaalidasa' film's song compositions was going on, Director MP Renukasharma, Dr. Raj's Younger brother SP Varadaraj & Music Director M Rangarao selected to compose this sanskrit song. In this movie all songs are sung by Dr. Rajkumar only, when this song composition came to compose.., Dr. Raj told to M Rangaroao I have an idea, I will sing once, if it's okay you can record. Otherwise you compose in your own way, Then Dr.Raj sang in front of Music Director M Rangarao, After listening Rangrao hugged Dr. Raj very tightly.he became overwhelm because of his tremendous music knowledge & he touched Dr.Rajkumar's feet. Rangarao said what was in my mind that you have sung it now. Its really very good, everything is perfect I will record this your version only. This is true story behind this great song. He was a village rustic who marries a princess... wedding arranged by the minister in her father's court to cheat her. She realises that he doesn't know to read and write... asks him to pray to Maa KaLi... who writes OM and he becomes a poet and Shyamala Dandakam is Kalidasa's very first peom.
