Note: There is a sizable group of ex-whaler fans who are Devils fans. SW CT is essentially part of the NY area so when the Whale ceased to exist, we couldn't become Ranger Fans because the rivalry was too heated and what's the point of being an Islander fan if you're not from LI. So alot of us became Devils Fans. They were on our local TV and the small city vibe was similar to the Hartford Whalers. Plus they won Cups and hate the Rangers as much as we did. It all worked out.

Compared to elsewhere around the world, the origins of professional athletics in the US/Canada is mainly rooted in the entertainment business. While much of the North American landscape did start out with amateur clubs, many saw the opportunity to organize it and turn it into a financial opportunity. Sell a product, entertain people, make money off of it. Certain business metrics go into it, and if the owners decide it’s in the best interest of the league from a business standpoint to move the team, they’ll do it. This is in contrast to the sports world outside where the majority of sports has stayed true to the club origins of teams around the world. They kept it about the game, the club, the traditions, and the identity of the surrounding community. That being said, these videos may make it sound like teams are moving all the time at a moment’s notice, but obviously saying a team has moved years after the fact is a much quicker process than a team actually moving; it’s a complicated matter on why a team would move, and most leagues understand it’s a very drastic measure that they are very reluctant to take given the impact it could have on a team’s current community.

I am a 65 year old Mets/Giants/Knicks fan. My dad was a fan of the baseball and football Giants. When his baseball team moved to SF, he followed them in the sports pages and by watching Mets games on TV, because he was an NL guy who didn’t care about the Yankees and the AL. He rooted for the Mets to knock off the Giants rivals because they were an expansion team and no threat to contend for the pennant. So I grew up watching the Mets and became a Mets fan. I became a football Giants fan because my dad was and we watched games on TV or listened to Marty Glickman call the games on the radio when NFL home games were blacked out.

As someone who lives on Long Island in Nassau County. I live and breathe the Islanders as well as Long Island, even though I was born in Stamford CT. The Hartford Whalers had already moved to North Carolina long before I was born. My family moved back to Long Island in 2008 and in 2011, I took the Islanders as my team even though the Rangers were much better at that time. I had a much older grandfather than most people and he was always a Yankees fan. He saw almost every legendary player the team has had over the decades. He got to see Aaron Judge burst onto the scene in 2017. The Rangers were in their infancy when he was growing up in NYC but he was never a hockey guy. He and my grandmother died from covid in March 2020 just 24 hours apart. He always watched the Yankees on TV and he always wore a Yankees hat. When he was a kid, he always listened to games on the radio because television didn’t become mainstream until he was in his 30’s. He played stick ball with other kids his age on city streets during the darkest days of the Great Depression and is a Korean War veteran. I still miss my grandparents a lot even five years later and losing them so quickly was traumatic for my family. Me personally, I’m also a Giants and Knicks fan but I’m not nearly as invested into those two teams as I am with the Islanders. Hockey is my favorite sport and as soon as news breaks within the NHL, I know what happened almost immediately.

I'm a NY sports fan from Long Island who is a diehard Mets fan and favors the Jets, Rangers and Knicks. However, I am not one who hates the other franchises and will grudgingly root for the Yankees and Giants when they make the postseason. I actually used to root for the Islanders in the 70s because I grew up close to the Coliseum. I was actually at the first Islander home win in their first season (my cousin actually has the game winning puck from the game). I do have one comment. I think you kind of glossed over the history of the New York Nets. They started out as an ABA team, moving to the Coliseum after it opened. This coincided with the acquisition of hometown hero Dr. J - Julius Erving, who was one of the greatest players I ever saw play live. The Nets became a powerhouse, until the ABA folded. The Nets had to pay a $3 million fee to the Knicks, who were owned by the conglomerate Gulf & Western at the time. This was because the Knicks claimed the NY-NJ market in the NBA. So the Nets moved to New Jersey and sold Dr J to the 76ers for $4 million so they could pay off the Knicks. Fans of both teams were upset because the Nets left Long Island and lost their top star, while the Knicks pocketed money instead of waiving the fee in exchange for Dr J. All Dr J did was turn a lousy 76ers franchise into a powerhouse in the 80s, while the Knicks and Nets haven't won a championship since.

A few things I’d like to add: 1) Early 1970s the ABA Nets played at the Coliseum with the Islanders before moving to Jersey with the NBA/ABA merger 2) Mid 1970s the Mets, Yankees, Jets and Giants all shared Shea for a few years during Yankee Stadium’s renovation and Giants Stadium’s construction. 3) MLS has grown here! With the Red Bulls playing in Harrison, NJ and New York City FC now playing between Yankee Stadium and Citi Field while the first ever soccer specific stadium is being built across the street from Citi! 4) The Islanders had a 5 or so year stint in Brooklyn at the Barclays before moving back to the Coliseum while UBS was under construction. 5) The women professional leagues have grown in recent years with super teams like the Liberty (located in Brooklyn) and Gotham FC (located in Harrison, NJ) winning championships recently in the WNBA and NWSL respectively. Hopefully the New York Sirens (PWHL), who share a home with the NJ Devils can say the same soon!

And I guess just to leave my alliances here… I was born into the Mets/Giants/Knicks fandoms and have been through the highs and (mostly) lows. When the Isles played in Brooklyn I started watching and rooting for them then. With NYCFC playing at Citi Field it was easy for me to follow on and watch them (aside from the fact that’d be one less team to go to Jersey for). The Liberty moving to Brooklyn helped me pay close attention to them as well. And just happening to watch Gotham FC on tv one day helped expose me to them/eventually watch them win a championship! Honestly, being a New York sports fan is great bc you have so many different options, rivalries and passionate fanbases.

NYCFC played their first game in 2015, and has advertised themselves as being in “the city” opposed to RBNY, playing in Harrison NJ. I think this would’ve been really interesting to add considering how recent the teams have formed and fans choosing their teams much more recently.

Mets/Devils here. Both sides of my family are/were National League fans going back a ways, so the Mets are *the* family cheering interest. Meantime, I've grown up in New Jersey and was 10 years old when the Devils won their first Stanley Cup; later, their move to Newark, right by my hometown, made me decide I wanted to follow hockey more, too, a sport most in my family don't watch as closely. I'm not a big football fan anymore, but I mostly followed the Giants; more of my family liked the Jets, but the passion for football wasn't there like it was for baseball, so my thinking on it was probably as simple as "they wear blue, and that's my favorite color". And on basketball, I've actually given both local teams a chance: child me grew up with the Ewing-era Knicks and loved them, then young adult me gave the Kidd-era Nets a chance, but I just didn't stick around with either of them thanks to their long term futility but also due to the Nets abandoning New Jersey, plus just not finding the NBA all that entertaining anymore.

My 3 brothers and father are the popular Yankees Giants combination. I became the more rare Giants Mets combination. There is a small Giants Mets cohort that exists for New Yorkers born in the late 70s like myself as we fell in love the ‘86 Giants Mets as children. With the benefit of hindsight it was probably poor decision 😂.

You need to do a video on the Chargers and LA football. Being a San Diego Chargers fan is a mess. LA and SD Chargers fans don’t like each other, Rams and Chargers fans don’t like each other, all while Raiders fans, a team that’s not even there, are the most prominent fans in LA. A video on how this disaster happened would be interesting.

I was born and raised in central NJ by the Delaware River, and my father while just following the local NY and Philly teams from his childhood (although he preferred the Mets), never pressured me into liking certain teams, just taking me to any sporting event I was willing to go to. That allowed me to choose my teams as I grew up, and today I am a Yankees, Giants, Knicks, and Devils fan (Seton Hall too if we're talking about more NJ sports, Hazard Zet Forward). I used to actually watch the Nets and Knicks equally as a kid, but when the Nets abandoned NJ I was upset and now I hate them with a passion. It's funny that without any traditional influences from my parents, I still ended up rooting for the traditional, Yankees/Giants/Knicks combo with an NJ twist. Really enjoyed your video and the historical background on all of this, but yeah the beauty of NY sports is there's so many different combos to root for.

Yankees, Knicks, Islanders, Jets, and CUSE. The fan base extends to Upstate NY as well (Where and what is Upstate NY is a debate unto itself). I grew up in the Hudson Valley roughly an hour north of Yankee Stadium. Some of my fandom, which was shaped in the 70s, depended on what teams were passed down to you by Dad, who your friends rooted for, and what teams you could actually see on TV with or without cable. I became an Islanders fan almost entirely because I would watch there replays in the morning on the old Sports Channel Cable network before going to school each morning. Also, when the LA Dodgers visit NY for a game, the amount of Dodgers fans who remain loyal and turn out the games is pretty impressive.

However, literally every single member in my family (extended included) are Giants fans so I wanted to be different so I eventually switched to the Bills because to be honest, they are NY’s only real team. I’m also a huge fan of Josh Allen fan. I have also developed way more emotion into the Bills than I have for the Giants over the years. Also since I’m also a Mets fan, I find it odd to root for the Giants as they have way more of a connection to the Yankees than the Mets but I had never seemed to like the Jets either as they aren’t any better at running a Franchise. Nobody call me a bandwagon as the Giants have way more and I mean way more Super Bowls than the Bills who have none and I also tend to like rooting for the underdog.

A few interesting New York hockey notes. The first NHL team in NYC was actually the Americans who also played in MSG. The Rangers were founded soon after and quickly became the better and more popular team. In a late move to gain fans, the New York Americans rebranded as the Brooklyn Americans even though they continued to play at MSG. They would fold soon after. It’s also worth noting how the Islanders brief move to Barclays Center in Brooklyn failed due to the difficulties with the commute for the majority of their fan base in Long Island, and how UBS Arena has worked better due to the better commute (and considerably more parking for those who drive), while still being close enough to NYC proper to be reachable by subway to grow their fan base there.
