In this video I will show you the process of printing my linocut print "Tomorrow, Tomorrow".
Watch me transfer my original sketch to a lino block using just a pencil, prepare cotton rag paper for printing, register the design so that it aligns with the paper, sign the finished piece, and more.

Easily one of the most satifaying video for an artist who ever tried linocut. I'm glad I've stepped onto that video, everything is well fillmed and show off the process in a such contemplative way.

What's up with the 147 ppl who gave this video a thumb down? Watching how everything works and operated so nicely in such small space is very both beautiful and satisfying. Such sufficient use of space, and well kept.

It is great that your video really takes its time and shows so much of your process. That way you get a feeling of how much work really lies behind each print and how much care they are made with. They are so much more than "copies". I have just started trying this tecnique myself and I am really longing for all those tools and to get better understanding of all the ways of the process 🥰

Dear Maarit, I'm not sure why I've become emotional viewing your process. Perhaps it the simplicity of raw talent I see in you and believe I've too in me. Perhaps its the great care and definition of your use and chosen tools. It may be the wonderful music, acoustic guitar and vocals lending to our experiencing You. Either way and any way about this, for me it rings True! I'm eager for gains of my very own w/LinoCuts and Printmaking. As matter of fact the very first little hand carving tools kit just arrived! There's still the business of selecting my linoleum for carving. And deciding then drawing my image, yes! And of course I shall be researching the medium as a whole, too. This video and all others from You has served me well Dear Maarit! As Validation for where my heart must follow... And for this I say Thank You Thank You Thank You! Exciting the journey no matter the outcome! Detail has always enticed and satisfied this drive for my art. It's now up to the lowly condition of the muscles and of course my watch of them tell yeah or nay further march! But this shan't stop me, may be slow... But I'm super cool w/it no matter too! Here's to This and to You and to WhatEVER shall come of It! Kisskiss LoveLOVELove! ~X🎨💨X~

I find it gives a more even print. The lino I'm using is smooth, but with the tiniest imperfections on it. Lightly sanding the surface gets rid of all that. Some say it also removes a sort of a film from the surface, making the ink stick better. In any case, these are minor differences, and you might get perfect ink even without sanding.

What a wonderful video to show your process! I have a question about inking. When I roll ink onto my lino, the ink starts to bead a few seconds after rolling it on and doesn't stay or spread smoothly on the lino. The print ends up looking very patchy, mostly like an orange peel skin. The print is a bit like your test print (at 6:12 secs) but worse, and I'm looking for a complete black print effect like your end product. I'm using Schmincke aqua linoprint ink. Is there something you can suggest?
@MaaritHanninen
@MaaritHanninen 5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you're using water-based ink. My test print in the video is also done with water-based ink = patchy, uneven print. I use oil-based inks for my final prints. They give a nice, even finish, and don't dry too quickly. See the materials list on my website for some recommendations (maarithanninen.com).

I have a couple questions (now that I got all my lino supplies) -- 1) This is the first time I have seen anyone sand/treat the lino that way. Do you do that for texture within the print, or some other reason? 2) What purpose does soaking the paper serve? Given how heavy it is it seems like maybe it makes it more likely to accept the ink? That said, is it dry again when you do the print or still somewhat damp? 3) Why do the graphite transfer instead of drawing right on the lino? Is that purely to have an easier time seeing what you're doing? 4) What kind of linoleum are you using? I'm in the US and picked some up yesterday. I had a choice between a much softer type and a type that is considerably harder/less flexible. It looks like you're using the latter. Thanks for any tips/info you have :)
@MaaritHanninen
@MaaritHanninen 5 жыл бұрын
Hey! Congrats for your first lino tools 😀 1) sanding gets rid of small imperfections in the lino, and gives better ink coverage. 2) soaking the paper makes it softer, helping it to take the ink better. 3) you could also draw straight on the lino. Sometimes I prefer drawing on paper. There's no wrong or right way here. 4) I'm using so called battleship grey lino, or Walton lino. Check out the materials list on my website for more info and suppliers (maarithanninen.com).

@@MaaritHanninen Thanks so much for the reply! Last question then I'll get outta your hair :) What grit of sandpaper are you using? Something super fine, I imagine? It looks like you're in Europe and I dont know if they grade it differently there but her in the US it usually ranges from very low/coarse (40 is super coarse) to very very fine like 280+ Thanks again for shining light on the details :)

I don't know the exact number but the finer the better. You'll want the plate to be as smooth as possible.

@@MaaritHanninen Hi Maarit ! I discovered your art yesterday, and i'm so amazed by your skills, and the beaut of your work : Thank you for the answers you gave to Layton, it will definitely help me in the near future (i'm also a tiny beginner). I really love your videos ; I found them so useful... and relaxing too !!! I'm also sorry to bother you. I use khadi paper, wich I find so amazing, and also Sumi-E, that gives a "inkjet printed" mood to the patterns. I never soaked my kadhi paper, even though I saw some people do it. I like the result as it appears, but as I cannot compare to a soaked paper, I'ld like to know if not soaking the paper is inappropriate. I wouldn't start making mistakes. Tjank you !!!
