hai sir, i found photo capture function when i playback video in my a6500 (jpeg only and with 16:9 only aspect ratio,2,1mp in full hd and 8mp in 4k video) , how to make the photo from this function sharp and not blurry like we use slow shutter speed, i try to shooting a moving object in 4k ,with 30mm sony lens and use fast shutter speed around 1/200 and the result still not sharp like we use photo function?. thanks before sir...
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
If your intention is to create sharp photos, you need a faster shutter speed than is usual or desirable for video. However, 1/200 sounds reasonably fast except maybe for sports.

very detailed review as always :) Interestingly, after I have watched this review, my thought about this A6500 changed a bit. It seems that Sony is improving all those adjustable features, metering mode for example. Would be very nice, if Sony follow what Fuji does in every fw update.
@MaartenHeilbron8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, kind words are always appreciated. I underestimated the A6500 at first too. And good point - it would be nice if Fuji, Panasonic and Sony would start to do some feature matching. At the moment, it feels as if they're not even watching what the others are doing.

Thanks for your reply Martin. Yes, I was referring to using the multi metering mode, and then adjusting the 'brightness' of a raw file in post processing, and that that could mean that the combined spot meter/focal point feature is unnecessary, and superfluous.
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Always my pleasure. These are all tools in your ability to get the right exposure - which is not always the exposure the camera, or the meter, wants.

Hi Maarten! As always another great video; it was very thorough and highlights the capabilities of the a6500 better than any video I've seen online. I agree that sony has made strides with this new camera and am quite tempted to get one now. For the next one, I wish they'd add a secondary dial and maybe update the battery (although highly unlikely). The main questions I have concerns the video capture from a video file feature (30:09), is it as useful as Panasonic's "4k photo" still extraction? What type of image is generated? I'd love to see a video on if it is a practical feature for action photography.
@MaartenHeilbron8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind words. You'll get a single 8Mp JPEG image - but remember, it was recorded with video settings (ie. shutter at 1/60). Of course, you could set it to a higher shutter speed, but then the video is weird. Clearly, Panasonic's 4K photos modes are superior.

nice video again, after a few months of use i 100% agree it grows on you compared to even the a6300. One thing i could see you add to your reviews is some good lens options. People who get a 6500 we can assume will get a few lenses over time and i can see you spend about 5min on them.

Probably the best Sony A6500 video review that I've seen, although the multifarious video settings are somewhat overwhelming to the untrained like moi. I haven't purchased the camera yet, and I'm just wondering if you found the spot metering that follows the focus point to be very useful or not, considering that exposure can be adjusted afterwards if necessary?
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words, and the new word - I had to check the dictionary for multifarious - thanks for that. It is useful. I'm not sure how you intend to adjust exposure afterwards? Even if it is possible to make some adjustments to a RAW capture, it's always much more effective to get the exposure right in camera. The A6500 has enough tools to help you get it right - the meter, the histogram and zebra.

Best review I have seen of this camera and I have seen some. Very useful and specific with a touch of humor. Thank you. One question. I've seen you used it pluged in until it shuts down. Can you used it without the battery? just pluged in to the power? Thank you in advance.

Hey Maarten, I have watched a bunch of your videos as i am looking to upgrade from the D300s i have had for 6 years. Love to see the awesome content from a fellow Canadian though i have lived in Florida for almost 40 years. I want to go mirrorless and i am between the Sony a6500 and the Panasonic GH5, as i want a camera that can do photo and video. The Sony A7r3 would be great just too much $$. Excellent review as usual! With regards to the over-heating, I suspect if the camera is outside under direct sunlight the video shooting time before overheating shutdown would likely be (significantly) shorter. Lastly, the 'fun' (Fn) menu! :)

Thank you for the very detailed review! When you talk about the USB external power, is that from larger mah battery? What voltage would the camera require, if that was the route chosen?
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Any USB power source (like those for phones) will work. The voltage is regulated by USB, and is the same for all devices. Cameras are not more demanding than phones in their power requirements, obviously more is better and will last longer.

@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the kind words. Quick answer: Yes, but you have to keep your eye on it, there's no warning that it has stopped, then yes as long as you keep changing batteries, possibly memory cards and it doesn't overheat. For this purpose, I'd really recommend that you purchase a true video camera.
@KentuckyFriedWalrus8 жыл бұрын

Hi Maarten, I love your channel ! I remember you giving a tip for the A6500 where you can use the shutter button to stop Movie recording instead of the Movie button. I cant seem to find it anymore. What was the setting to activate that ? Thanks again for an amazing channel.
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Although that's an option on several recent models, "Movie w/ shutter" was not an option on the A6500. Maybe it will appear in a firmware upgrade. There is a MOVIE button option, which disables the movie button in other modes. There are lots of ways to stop recording - change the mode, or power down the camera.
@portreathbeach5 жыл бұрын
Hi Maarten, Great review again. Just one thing, you say about the 'image playback as an afterthought', and you mention there isn't an inbuilt RAW to JPG conversion. Does this mean if I shot in just RAW as I always have done on my Canon camera, I could not review the images on the camera. Would I have to shoot raw + jpeg?
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words, sorry to be confusing. There's no in-camera conversion if you have a RAW file and want to create a JPEG (a feature nearly every other camera has). You can review the images in camera if you shoot RAW, RAW+JPEG or just JPEG.
@AlMarzouq7 жыл бұрын
Very much enjoyed the review and all other videos as well. I am planning to buy this camera but not sure what Lens(es) should I get with it. I don't have any lenses and its my first mirrorless camera I buy. I am planning to shoot video and stills of my 8 month old son and take it with me on vacations as well as serve as a family camera. I don't Vlog or share my stills or video online. I initially thought about buying Sony E PZ 18-105 mm F4 G as an all around lens but I am not sure about using this lense indoors as it might be little slow. I also wanted to add Sony SEL35 F1.8 for low light conditions and portrait shooting. What do you think about this combination? Is there anything you would change?
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
+Fahad Al-Marzouq Thanks for the kind words. I'd suggest the 16-70 and the 35. I wasn't pleased when I shot with the 18-105. F4 isn't much of a worry with the excellent high ISO performance. Unless, of course, your budget allows for full frame options ...

I'm a novice to photography. I'm looking at a camera that i can use for mild vlogging here and there, I also want to use it for photography, mostly landscape. I just finished watching your rx100 V review, its currently my favorite and i've used a mark iv before. Can you recommend a camera? Thanks
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Mild vlogging ... hmmm .... There are many cameras that have a screen that swivels to face forward, (not just up like the RX100V) which is what I would prefer/recommend for vlogging. There are some nice (inexpensive) models from Canon (Rebel T series) and Panasonic (G7, G85, GX85). The second feature I'd look for is a mic in - and both have models to accommodate. After that, it's pretty much pick your price point (and get a lens with a nice wide angle, as you'll likely be pretty close.)

I appreciate the kind words, thanks. I haven't yet had a chance to review the GH5, but from the specs it does seem to have moved the bar forward, particularly for video.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoy your KZbin camera videos. Great information, concise and to the point, and very nicely captured with the camera. Might we tap your expertise. We would like to start a KZbin channel for gardening that includes the Amazon Affiliate links that you are using. How do you create and qualify for this Amazon link? Do we also need a website or can we just have a KZbin Channel? Is the Amazon Affiliate link something that you create when we create our KZbin Channel? Thanks
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words - I certainly appreciate that you took the time to comment. As for my expertise ... my Amazon affiliate links have not been successful (although I know people who claim to earn a substantial amount). You have to establish the account with Amazon (they have some rules, but the barrier to entry is relatively low) - search for affiliate on the web site (or google) and you'll find the link.

Oh, now I am wanting to sell my a6300 after watching this!! Maybe I should just get a stabilizer instead.
@MaartenHeilbron8 жыл бұрын
That is an issue I'm also grappling with ... As for a stabilizer, that will do a great deal more than the IBIS in the the A6500, and would be a worthwhile investment if you would use it often - remembering that it's a video solution, while the IBIS in the A6500 is really more for stills than video.

Which one would you recommend between xt2 and a6500 today in 2018 after the launch of a7III? For filmmaking and street photography..
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
I would recommend the one you prefer. Both are more than suitable with the right lens. Review of A7 III coming soon.

Maarten Heilbron i am not able to figure out ryt lens for a6500, looking for fuji 23 f/1.4 equivalent. Also on xt2 I am confused about IBIS as it's not offered. I want to keep the system light and small so that I can carry it with everywhere...
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
The IBIS provides little value, certainly not for video or street - it has some value in longer focal lengths in situations like wildlife and birding. Although it's slightly pricey, the FE24 F1.8 comes close. I'd prefer the FE28 f2.
@TuhinTulsyan6 жыл бұрын
Maarten Heilbron I am not in for birding or wildlife. I was thinking of IBIS for only filmmaking.
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Although there may be some slight advantage with IBIS, you'll need a gimbal or other stabilizer for video.

How is the SD card "backwards" an issue. For one, it isn't "backwards" or it wouldn't fit. If you flipped it 180 (contacts on other side) it wouldn't change the awkwardness of getting it in and out. Honestly I don't see an issue with it. Like USB connections are orientated on every device/PC. You just have to pay attention. Would it be better to have the SD card slot on the side? Probably but I think Sony crammed it in there to save space and complexity of the design. And thanks for a great video.
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
My pleasure, thanks very much for the kind words. Do you have an A6000 series camera? Have you tried to remove the card? There is a little lip on the front of an SD card to use your fingernail to ease it out. It's usually not needed, but here the slot is so close to the door that it's hard to grip with the fingers, so it is needed. Flipping the card 180 would enable me/us to pry the card out using the fingernail slot. A side slot would be 100 % better. The reason it's backwards - to accommodate Sony's memory stick format cards, which have long been out of fashion.
@netposerx7 жыл бұрын
Now I see what you are talking about. Since the lip is on the "wrong" side there is no room for you to use the lip on the SD card. Too cool. For some reason I never noticed that lip was there for that reason. I have and a6000 and an a6500. I usually have to grab SD card by the sides and pull out. Thanks for pointing that out.
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Would have been so easy to get this right. I find that I'm frequently struggling with gripping from the side - particularly when it's on a tripod. It is however, a minor aggravation to an otherwise fine and enjoyable camera, particularly for video.
@netposerx7 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing the contacts inside the camera for the SD card determined it's orientation. But you are 100% correct, that lip on the SD card is there for that reason. Reminds me of USB connectors. You never know the orientation until you look closely. Wish orientation weren't an issue like USB Type C and Lightning connectors. :)
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
That's correct, but the orientation is designed for Sony memory sticks, not SD cards. Yes, nice to finally have some connectors where you don't have to try twice ...

Design issue, happens on many Sony models. Not sure whether it's to keep the heat down or to conserve battery power. There are lens hoods or loupes you can purchase to remedy this problem - or just use the viewfinder.

Up to now I have always created my videos with an old point and shoot Canon Legria HF 200 Camcorder which has always given me crystal clear, sharp and colourful film without having to do anything. However, my good friend recently died and he bequeathed me his singing, all dancing A6500 in which I'm struggling to obtain anything like the Canon quality. I do so want to at least honour my friends memory by giving it my best shot, but the KZbin films just don't cover what I'm after. So is it possible to set the Sony up to do what my Canon can do? meaning whether I film relatively close up or relatively long distance, I at least end up with crystal clear, sharp images and I do realise post colour editing is required, which is a whole new ball game again. I'm predominantly filming racing pigeons both inside and outside the lofts which is my hobby and was also my late friends. From what I have researched the lens is a bottom of the range Sony 3.5-5.6/16-50 and so will never give the zoom range of my Canon, but I can live with that.
@MaartenHeilbron4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your confidence in my ability to assist. I don't know the HF200, and have no idea what colour profile Canon baked into that. I do know that between creative styles (which are presets that can be modified to suit any colour science preferences you may have) and the picture profiles - which provide an even great adjustment latitude - that you should be able to create as good, if not better images with the larger sensor of the A6500. Not sure if you're shooting HD or 4K - you might find the 4K quality, even downrezzed in post, to be superior. And certainly, upgrade that lens, which is likely the largest obstacle to achieving better results. This may also be helpful: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqLUkIFnqcmtpMk

@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you very much for so quick a reply and I will run your link a few times to see if I can obtain what I'm looking for. I think the answer to my requirement is that it cant be done on the Sony to just be able to point and shoot no matter what the environment and obtain as good as my camcorder. However, perhaps you may be interested later to see exactly the same footage from both cameras once I have tried to put into practice what you describe in the link? But I do understand if you don't, as I'm surely not your normal knowledgeable user.

Hey Maarten, yet another question I have on this A6500, that I'm hoping you can shed some light on! Focus magnifier, I have that mapped to the top C1 button, press it once the red square box appears, press it again and it magnifies to 4.0X, press again goes back into full view, however, sometimes if I press that button twice I get a 11x magnification? Is there a way to set that to the 11x or anything past 4x?
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
The additional magnification is available in stills mode, not in video. There are no other adjustments.

There are many, the best are the full frame e-mount. For the APS-C, I like the Sony/Zeiss 16-70, it's a good all-purpose lens.

tips... Long exposure hands free... 1) get and start the free app ' touchless shutter' 2) in manual mode choose " bulb" 3) move your hand near the EVF to open shutter 4) move your hand near the EVF to close the shutter. A watch or phone can be used as a timer.😎

Maarten - I've asked this question on several other posts, and no one seems to be able to answer, hopefully you, or anyone reading this can! On the A6500 is there anyway to see the movie clip metadata? Specifically, I need to see the file number of the clip in playback. Can't seem to figure out how, or if this can be done. Thank you!
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Nope - and it would be awesome and helpful (there's an XML file in the directory, which in my mind could store even more info. But you can't see the actual filename either for video clips or for stills. I frequently complain about this, but Sony doesn't seem to care.
@tubularsensation7 жыл бұрын
Maarten Heilbron Wow! I appreciate the reply, I was ripping through all these menus frantically looking for this simple feature. This has to be the ONLY camera on the planet that doesn't display the file number. Hello, Sony, yeah, on set, having those numbers displayed really helps for, obvious reasons!
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Not the only, but certainly one of the few - it's less common in video. Canon does this best, with lots of metadata. Yup, obvious reasons.

I have concerns about the lubricant from the IBIS getting on the shutter curtain. I don't trust the fact that they've now stuffed an IBIS inside of the *same* a6300 body which was already crammed. I would love the a6500's buffer and other features. The thing is that... I feel that I'd be miserable invested in a system with such poor ergonomics. The features are great, but I doubt it's longevity, and I really don't like the feeling of being trapped by the a6500's ergonomics. I really wish they'd redesigned their APS-C body.
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Hadn't thought about the lubricant - is that an issue in other cameras? I agree that in general the A6K series is a little small - I'd love a little more room under the LCD and the lens, along with all the other complaints I made in the video.
@NeverWolf7 жыл бұрын
It has been in older models with IBIS. There was a Sony A mount camera. If you take one of those apart I can almost guarantee you'll find lubricant on the shutter curtain.

This review makes me want to have a go with a6500 instead of Nikon's D500.
I know one pro photographer who put up for sale his Nikon mirror system when Sony a6000 came out. I'm not this kind of a pro. I'm still retaining my current Nikon DX DSLRs and lens and might or might no longer upgrade to newer bodies like the D500 that I have my sights on. I might get and test the a6500 how it would complement my mirrored DX system. Nothing definite yet.

That's a well-reasoned approach. I always hate to hear from photographers who are selling everything and starting fresh - I'm sure that's rarely a successful approach.
