You're absolutely right about the zest of MacBaren mixtures. Their cavendish is what gives it that "zing", as you put it. No idea how they do it in their process but it's one of the things that keeps me coming back to MacBaren over many other tobaccos. I fell in love with it the first time I smoked Roll Cake.

Beautiful pipe, I love watching videos of blends I’ve smoked and then going back and trying them with your notes! Another great video👏🏻

I liked the tin I bought so much I bought a pound box. I love Carolina red flake with perique and I understand what you meant about the stewed fruit thing. I have the Solani but it's been awhile since I've smoked it.

Great review, as always! Burley Flake was the last of the readily available HH line for me to try and I thought, "What the hell was I dragging my feet for?" Tasty stuff. Have you ever tried Cobblestone: Outdoors Hiking? That is a similar burley/VA/Kentucky that flies under the radar. It's made by K&K so it has a similar but different "zing."

I’ll have to check that one out! Thanks.

Good review. I have heard it said that Kentucky can stand in for perique. Perhaps the addition of the Virginia and Kentucky is what is giving this a Va/Per like taste.

Could be…it does add some spice notes to it.

I enjoy this blend, I have found that when I add a pinch of P.S toasted Burley I like it more. Great review guy's.

My comment is for Fred Mc….. Which PS Burley? Is it 312 or 702? What percentage of toasted burley do you use in one bowl worth? Thanks for your help.

I haven't had this one yet! I've had most all the other Mac Baren HH blends and enjoyed them - so I should pick up a tin of this sometime soon (not like I need to buy more tobacco but you know how it is!)

I agree that the taste is subjective, but I also find that your mood, state of mind, atmosphere, company your with, has a lot to do with the taste and enjoyment of the bowl your smoking. I’ve have had some I loved, but then smoke it under different circumstances, didn’t care as much for it, but then later again under different circumstance’s enjoyed it again. 🤷🏻♂️ Have you had that same experience?

Yes I have…esp. when it comes to what food I e just eaten. Also, different pipes change the experience for me, as well.

I may try a tin of this. But for burley I Kinda like Watch City Cigar burley. Great video. 👍 But I'm outside 14 degrees 6" of snow, missing Texas bad... (in Ohio)

I smoke and enjoy all 3 of the big premium burley flakes (Solani, MacB HH and Wessex Burley Slice). Each one has held the top spot for me over the years, but for now, the Mac Baren is really meshing with my palate. It isn’t ALL burley, but a very well blended flake. I’ve smoked burley exclusively since the first cool days of Fall and will probably roll back into my VAs and VApers about mid Spring, but for now-gimme a bowl of Mac Baren HH Burley Flake.

Cocoa explosion, slightly tangy, nutty. It’s like smoking a dark chocolate cake with a little orange zest on top. This is my number 1 burley. And no topping, amazing.

Two very different blends. One burley and one VA/Bur. I enjoy the Amphora burley over the HH Burley Flake, so I stick with that one😊👍🏻

I blend my own and I smoke commercial blends. If you smoke each varietal you will educate your tastebuds on how each different tobacco hits you. There is a difference between them all. Try it and then see how it changes your reviews. Kentucky or dark fired burley is very different from Perique. Same goes for different other tobaccos.

In HH burley I find no complexity to the taste, it is flat from start to finish and sweet because of the Virginia. I definitely prefer the Solani, superior to HH in strength and expressiveness. The price of HH in Italy is 26 euros for a 50g tin. and Solani 31 euros but I still prefer it.
