Hi Lance … Greetings from across the pond (U.K.) … To begin with thank you for your informative and helpful content which, as a current 5.1 owner are super useful to me … Based on your last video I’m now also on the point of purchasing the same spec 7.1 Mac Pro as the prices have dropped quite dramatically and, for me it represents the sweet spot in the range and, as you pointed out is highly customisable ! … I still intend to keep my old 5.1 as I can use it, in my rig with Vienna Ensemble Pro Server running on both machines because, as you rightly pointed out there’s little resale value in it but it will still run power hungry plugins with ease … Thanks again for your contributions to our community … All the best … Siobhan :)

Great video and right on time! I am going to do the same thing shortly. I was debating about the Mac studio as well but I love my Mac Towers :) Shame about the prices. So I am going to most likely get a used one. Even they can be pricey, I upgraded my 2010 tower with a OWC processor (cost me $600 and added more ram. I had my Mac in my studio since 2010, the thing runs like a champ. 0 Issues after all these years. But it's time to upgrade so I am going to pull the trigger.

It's great you found a decently priced 7,1. It seems like the logic upgrade to an 5,1. Now that your 5,1 isn't your primary machine anymore, I'd love to see you try to upgrade it to Sonoma and up and share your experience.

I have the 8-core version as well. There is a 16 core OEM on ebay for $550. Do you know if its a huge upgrade i know single isn't much difference but you get the Turbo Boost and multi core goes from 6000 to 12000 on Geekbench.

What’s weird about these is unlike other Mac Pro Xeons the single core is fastest on the 28 core which is only a 2.5ghz in geekbench but again that’s just Geekbench, they are all pretty close in single core it’s the multi core where you will benefit for things like audio DAWs, rendering etc. the 16 core scores higher than the 24 core in multi core which is odd so I think it’s the sweet spot for price to performance. The 28 core is not much faster. Again that’s just geekbench.

Does your current version of Pro tools (2023 I assume) run better on Monterey than your older version of Pro Tools running on catalina? is it faster and more efficient, does it seem to handle tasks better? opening large sessions? I want to make the jump to MLOC on my 5,1 to install Monterey and the Newest supported version of PT to have access to all the new Atmos features, but are a little skeptical about how well my computer would be able to handle it!

Update on Windows. I installed the Bootcamp drivers without using bootcamp and can now easily switch between Mac OS and Windows 11. Also when you set the security settings by booting into recovery mode you need to select "no security" and "allow from booting from external media etc" My windows drive now is called bootcamp even though I did not use bootcamp to install Windows I used Rufus which I have a video about installing Windows 11.

It doesn’t have thunderbolt it has USBC display port I’m pretty sure it will not work with a thunderbolt monitor. It does support a monitor with USBC at 120hz the stock AMD 6800xt and 6900xt reference GPUs have USB C ports.

Great content Lance! Just a question, did you happen to have a bootcamp partition when you migrated your 5,1 into the 7,1? It seems that I'm having trouble booting from my windows 11 drive and no uefi shows up on my boot picker any input would be appreciated!

Most likely your Microsoft folder is in your opencore efi folder you need to move it to the Windows drive efi folder or the Mac 7,1 won’t see it as bootable. Also you have to boot in the recovery mode and go to security settings to allow the McPro 71 to boot from external drives or other other OS. I had done this already and it was plug and play for me when I moved my windows drive to the 7,1 then I instaledl bootcamp drivers for the 7,1, Launch boot camp on the 7,1 and just download and install the drivers this way you can easily switch between the two OSs but did not install the Apple AMD drivers I installed the AMD adrenaline drivers because I’m using an RX 6900 XT not the MPX module just removed the AMD drivers before installing. So mount your opencore drives efi and copy the Microsoft folder and then mount your Windows drive efi folder and put it in there and boot into recovery and check the boxes to allow external boot drives etc, maybe that’s all you need to do but check the location of your Microsoft folder if it’s not on the Windows drive efi the Mac won’t see it.

@@MacSoundSolutions Thanks for replying! Yeah i believe that after I deleted the win 10 bootcamp partition on my main drive on the 7,1 it did not recognize the win 11 bootcamp drive on the sata. Makes sense that it might not have the microsoft folder but i started from scratch and just bootcamped directly to the sata drive instead of my main boot drive and upgraded to 11 from there!

⁠So it works now? My install of 11 is a Rufus install, which removes the TPM and secure boot to originally get it working in the 5,1 with Opencore. I have not tried a direct bootcamp install of 11.

I was hoping you were going to talk more about whether or not it was worth jumping to a 7,1 computer. I am still on my two 5,1's and neither has a boot screen despite enableGOP and like you I don't want to risk having one of them go down since they are also work computers

Stay tuned, I would say yes it’s worth it but it’s not cheap, but seeing I invested in other expensive ad ons that work in the 7,1 it is worth it. Why don’t not get bootscreen when you have enable GOP? You should be getting it unless you have a Sonnett card that is blocking it like my McFiver

You've tried to help me before as have quite a few others. Not really sure why I don't. I have an RX560 and an RX580. I don't even get the black screen that you're supposed to get with Open Core. I've tried swapping cards and connectors. I've tried reinstalling it. I posted (in the Mac Pro Upgrade FB group) my specs and screen showing that the enableGOP was installed. I'd love it if you had a solution.

Hello Lance. Just wondering if you know, 'will the audio video bridging (AVB) device to your Ethernet network' work correctly on a Mac Tower 7,1. I tried several 'modifications' on a Mac 5,1. I installed a flashed titan ridge and connected it to a Sonnet Thunderbolt AVB GE Adapter (No Good). I also purchased a Sonnet McFiver PCIe Card, installed that. (No Good). I then gave up after throwing alot of money at the project and 'borrowed' my Daughter's Mac M1 Ultra. Pro Tools Carbon worked right away. Thing is I don't like the form Factor of the ultra. I want everything in one Data Centre and not multiple boxes attached via thunderbolt. Also I am running 4 screens and Apple can say what they want, but a M1 Ultra doesn't care for 4 screens. (Two mirrored plus another two stand-alones extended) I sort of got that to work with a Plugable adapter, but it's not great and it seems to lose the configuration set up very regular. (which then becomes a huge waste of time re-configuring the screen arrangements). I's prefer to get a mac 7,1 and have that as the main Studio Computer. (with a Dedicated video card outputting 4 screens) That is the reasoning for my question regarding the AVB on a Mac Pro Tower 7,1.

Are you running opencore 0.9.8 and Monterey? The McFiver is supposed to support avb. But the 10GbE needs the opencore patch to work. I don’t have a avb device to test.

@@MacSoundSolutions I'm running the latest open core. I spent weeks trying to get this thing to work. From all accounts as per the Pro Tools Forums, it is a limitation of a 5,1. Maybe this is where the 5,1 machines end point is. AVB doesn't work correctly. Actually comes up as it is there when I check the system report on the Ethernet. Strange. For now I'll use the M1 Ultra while I look into if it will be ok on a 7,1. Thanks you for all the work you put in on your channel.

I have 96 gigs of ram in the 7,1 that Apple shipped with these, not sure the brand is and OWC ram in the 5,1 1333ghz DDR3 6X8 gig sticks triple channel memory using the first 3 slots in each bay leaving the 4th slot empty for best performance.

Enable GOP is for the Mac Pro 5,1 the 7,1 has the boot screen in the boot rom so the GPU does not need it. You can use any stock PC GPU that is compatible with Mac OS and as long as it fits length wise, it has to be under 305mm long. I have a rx6900xt on the way.

@@MacSoundSolutions Now I'm considering moving to 7.1 in the next two months. My cMP 5,1 with OC ML works great, but yesterday I noticed that VMware Fusion 13 requires XSAVE-compatible processors, which the 5,1 doesn't have. Fortunately, Parallels works very well.

Hi, I just cloned my Windows 10 to a M.2 PCIe NVMe with a cheap adapter put it into a 4X slot on my 5.1 mac pro and booted normally ? I tested the speed and its in the 1665. So that's seemed ok Played BF4 all night made a song in Cubase 13 Pro. Looks good. Boots normally on OCL with the picker. I then put back my OSX installation on my OWC Accelsior S with my regular SSD macOS 12 Monterey version and Hey I was surprised that everything works there too? Checked the speed of that one was around the normal 550 speed so Now I have everything on PCI and all good. Not sure what was the fuss about? Nothing like trying thing for yourself. So my conclusion is that the McFiver card would probably work fine for a double boot of Window and OSX. Have a good day and congratulation on your new mac pro 7.1 fantastic I'm sure. (O_O)

@@MacSoundSolutions MiniTool partition Wizard. No but a lot of folks seemed to say that putting Windows 10 on a M.2 PCIe NVMe would not work because that it wouldn't boot. I see no problem there. That's why now I might buy a McFiver card for this Mac Pro 5.1 so I could double boot OSX and Windows since it seems to work perfectly.
