I think this test is a bit misleading: Kontakt is mostly "load sample from drive storage and store into RAM" which clearly is no problem at all with the SSD drives and 192GB of RAM that you have. Granted that some of the orchestral instrument presets use a bit of reverb in Kontakt, it is minimal. What would be a very good stress test is to load a CPU intensive VST instrument (not a sample player) and a convolution reverb for example on each of the tracks. Keep duplicating that until it cracks. That would truly test the power of the system particularly the M2 chip.

@SoundFixationTV Thanks so much for doing these tests! One question on how you are running the projects. Could provide info on what drives were used for Running the tests? Im assuming SSDS with that kind of track count. Would be great to know what the hard drive specs the Cubase session was on in addition to what drive the Virtual Instrument libraries are stored / run from. Thanks again!

@@surreal_youtube Answers incoming! 1. I've been aware and intrigued with Acustica-Audio for a long time, but have not used them. What do you recommend? 2. So, I think your question would be more of a "real world" scenario where we combine instances of several different VI's. How the system would behave would depend on the particular VI's. Heavy hitting Synth VI's would bring the system to its knees way sooner. For example, even within Kontakt, we would not be able to duplicate my test with 1000 tracks of NI Pharlight playing at the same time! What VIs did you have in mind? 3. Yes and no! I have admittedly way too many outboard hardware units.. (Caught the bug years and years ago and began hoarding... I need to thin the herd!) So Yes I use them,....but not often anymore in a mixing context. Always on the way in though! 4. Keep em coming! 5. Love pizza! But no need to entice my taste buds to get me to talk about recording/studio/music topics! I can't help myself! Thanks so much for engaging with me and my videos! I appreciate it and it makes the work I put into making them worth while! P.S. What do you do? Are you a recording engineer/mixer/musician/composer?

I mainly record traditional band project and I also intend to upgrade my interface to a Soundcraft ui 24r or similar. I have very limited budget so what spec Mac mini do you advise? Thank you @stevewoodley5081! Glad you enjoyed the video! So. the first place I would recommend you to checkout for your purchase is: browser.geekbench.com/mac-benchmarks Find your current 2010 iMac, and compare the single & double core scores to the different Mac Mini versions you are researching. This will give you a good overall view what what type of performance boost you will see coming from you older Mac. (I had the 2010 Mac Pro prior to purchasing the m2 Ultra). Also, if you are using Logic Pro, wait till you see my next video coming out where I test the M2 Ultra with Logic. You're going to love the results! Thanks again!

I agree! The ultimate "real world" test would be 1000 tracks each playing something else and each loaded with a completely different Kontakt patch. Hey! Is the latency ultra low when you track vsti's? Could I trigger e-drums and piano without feeling any latency? I am asking because I saw many very powerful configurations in the past that didn't perform so well in that regard. You are using an UFX like I do so you know what I'm talking about. The UA Apollos were great but never matched the RME latency, hence I went with RME without a second thought, even though I like UAD plugins and Unison very much and have an UAD octo. What about native plugins (comps, reverb etc), maybe you could try that also, it would be very interesting. I guess this machine performs well in every aspect but I am happy to check everything before I buy it because it cost a lot of $$. Thanks in advance 💪💪
@SoundFixationTV

Hey @uadcro! I've never used e-drums before and can't say for sure. But I find by reducing the buffer to 64 on the RME, I can't feel any delay when playing my midi keyboard to the software samples, be they drum samples or otherwise. When I bought my RME, I bought the UA Apollo at the same time. And after extensive testing, RME was easily my choice! The latency and the drivers are just excellent. And yes... do take advantage of the return policy of any Apple computer you decide to buy! Test the crap out of them within the return window, because they are $$$$ expensive! Thanks for the comment!

Logic performance test coming soon! As for your question about Ram, the computer CPU performance won't be affected by ram. However, your RAM size dictates how many patches can be loaded into memory. With these powerful new computers, the CPU is powerful enough to run hundreds of instruments. Depending on the size of your patches, your Ram size could be a limiting factor. If you are not running HUGE templates, an M2 Max with 64gb of Ram would still be a fine computer!

One by one, remove each VST plugins or VI instruments, and monitor the performance meter to see which one might be causing the issue. I've had cases like that in the past. I hope you find out what's causing the issue!

Need clarification for few things: What audio interface was being used, what sample rate, and what buffer size What project preferences were used? 24bit, 32bit float, or 64bit float What asio guard setting was used How were the kontakt's setup? How was the routing done (asking because of bussing takes cpu-cycles) This could have been a really good test, if you would have given a rundown of the system and shown the system resources while playback.

Hey @whileimgaming! So pretty much all of that information is shared in the first 2 minutes of the video. It begins around the 1:00 mark. Thanks!

@@SoundFixationTV Aa, so it was. Would be nice to see a a/b to 32 or 64bit float projects. This is getting bit nitpicky, but did you setup your own preferences in the kontakt?

No change the audio settings to 32bit float , you will get doubled the Vis ! I’ll send a link in my test , but I think it’s getting deleted.

How much did you pay for it ? For this price it should do 970 tracks! It is insane the price that apple asks for this.

you r playing samples, basically... it's like mp3 player. To cut short - KONTAKT loaded into RAM and system just retrieves recorded samples. So you could watch how many RAM your 55 (or how much it was at first round) tracks use and compare that amount to MacStudio RAM. RAM is not a problem. The problem is CPU... Insert 2 audio tracks with Oaeksound Sooth/Spiff on them with 8x oversampling, add fabfilter limiter with 32x oversampling add saturation plugin (Saturn2 4x oversampling), these plugins process sound which generates NotSampleBasedSynth (not omnisphere, REAKTOR/Modular/VCV for example) and run these 2 tracks in 32bit/192kHz project (aliasing is very unique feature which exists only in digital environment, that's why oversampling is important for dynamic and saturation processing, physical-modeled and algorithm based synths and reverbs/delays and some "clever" plugins) and after that make a video if you still will be thinking that MacStudio is good investment... Right now you just showing how many songs your mp3 player can play... simultaneously though... stop wasting our time "homemade" youtubers, please...

Check you have cubase set to 32bit , as none of the Vis are 64bit .

Hey Andy, OSX Ventura doesn't support 32bit and neither does Apple Silicone mode. Everything including Kontakt (Only software used) is 64bit. Thanks for the comment!

It’s not the OS side which is 64bit , it’s the audio engine side , I have run lots of tests and have Logic and cubase , with cubase set you 32bit audio you get double the Vis
@AndyGrayedout

I should also say logic is 32 bit audio , Cubase defaults to, 64bit this is not the recording this is the internal engine dealing with the dynamic range , all of the tests I’ve done show no difference with performance between 32 and 64, except for virtual instruments

Hmm! At first i was shocked, then i realized these libraries are kinda old and not so "heavy". Do you believe that performance would deteriorate with modern - heavier libraries? Thanks for this amazing video
@SoundFixationTV

Hey @cultserpent4501! You're absolutely right! For example, we wouldn't be able to play 1000 tracks of high CPU usage Kontakt libraries, for example something like Pharlight, or other "heavy" libraries. However... there was a time (Not long ago at all I might add!) that our computers couldn't even have 1000 "empty" instances of Kontakt loaded, never mind actual patches loaded and playing at the same time! If you haven't had a chance, check out the Logic version of this test, the track count is absolutely incredible! : kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXSlepetZbFqo68 Thanks so much for your comment!
