The Mac IIci was my third Mac I was introduced to as a kid back in elementary school. First was a Mac Plus. Second was a Mac SE 800k with builtin HD. Third was the IIci Then Mac LC, PowerBook 180, PowerMac 6100/66, Lombard PowerBook G3, Rev. A Bondi Blue iMac G3, iBook, titanium MacBook Pro, a few more MacBook Pros, Macbook Air 11", and finally ending with a M2 MacBook Pro (middle sized screen)

Steve, you just made my childhood come back to me! This machine was my first computer ever of my own! It was my dad's first, but then he got a Power Mac 8500 (of which as you may know/remember I have a version of and it's ULTRA upgraded.. I've not touched it in ages though). 13 year old me played many many hours of SimCity 2000 as well as messing with ResEdit and swapping out sounds in random apps. I also remember early audio editing with SoundEdit... I remember splicing together an audio clip of Mozart's Eine Kleine Nact Musik with clips from the movie "Amadeus" and a fart sound. Use your imagination and you'll be able to figure out what edit I made those many years ago. I miss those days. Thanks for this informative video.

All these tips are just as important for old PCs as well, especially those from 386-pentium as they could have nicad barrel batteries that like to leak.

Very cool and informative! While I haven’t really done much with classic Mac OS systems, they are awesome machines. Sure it’ll take some work and maintenance, but it’s definitely worth doing especially if the battery hasn’t caused damage. Speaking of which, you got super lucky, that’s really clean logic board! 1:47 that's a Service Source original Apple Service Provider's only manual; before 2000 they came in CDs and were very comprehensive in taking apart every Mac model up to date; the troubleshooting section was so-so, as it only covered module replacement mostly. Overall good video, and let me add another must-have step: ESD measures.

I had a bit of a reorganise of one of my storage units, and found 6 boxes of logic boards (yes, 6 boxes) that I had stripped from some old Macs. I found 23 batteries and not one had swollen, but how many have 3.6v of charge?

Hey Steve - in some cases I have noticed that old capacitors with diminished capacitance need some power running through them for a while before they stabilize. If that's the case, and there is no leakage found, is it still dangerous to power on the system?

It really depends on the capacitors and the system. In some cases, like high end AV equipment - older caps which were made to higher standards can last longer and can be “reformed” and work okay. However, it is always wise to carefully inspect these things. I’ve witnessed caps that looked okay leak before my eyes due to the age of the seal keeping in the corrosive contents inside.

I would agree with your hippy friend though: plug it in and see what happens. If it has the weird boing, seek professional help. Opening a machine yourself and start fiddling on it is no easy cup of tea. And Rifa smoke, although it is nausating, is not killing anything. And somehow, I never found bad batteries in any machine. The worst thing that happened was the machine boots in 1/1/1970.

I've gotten really lucky, then. I got a handful of computers whose original PRAM batteries from 1991 were perfectly in tact. I still removed them immediately, but I was surprised and felt grateful.

Hey, I know this is a bit of s stretch, but i just recently got 2 iicis and one of them was kaput from an exploded battery, but the other wasn’t, but the rtc chip appears to be dead(wont show boot off known good hdd), after recapping with all tantalum’s, and even replacing the 32khz oscillator, and swapping chips from the bombed one. Is there potentially something I am missing?

Yes. You'll need to check and see that the traces on the top side of the logic board aren't damaged, which prevents the circuits from working right. If you have a multimeter, set it to "continuity test" and start probing around the board from point to point. Do this without hooking up the board to any power. If everything checks out, you might be OK. I'd recommend watching one of the videos from this channel or Branchus Creations that covers all this during a live stream to help with how to do proper checks on a damaged board. Both are very informative and thorough on the details of what to check and how to fix.

What is the easily servicable and non AIO vintage 68k pre 1993 macintosh you would recommend to first time tinkerers? (no CC because that has 99% of the time dead CUDA chips)

I go over a few systems in my Vintage Apple Basic #1 video. The Centris/Quadra 650 isn’t bad - has plenty of expandability and the logic board is free of leaky caps. The LC series are okay too, but the Centris is way faster.

Hello... is there a way to revive an old IIcx? I see a momentary green light, and then it powers down. I've looked inside, and as far as my inexperienced eyes can tell, there is no damage to the motherboard. Again, as far as I can see. (I also have no monitor for this thing.) Tanx!

I’d check out TinkerDifferent.com as the comments section is different to provide support in. It could be a bad power supply, it could be aging capacitors, it could be a short, many possibilities.
