I'm one of those people who shoots exclusively with the iPhone. There was a time when I wanted a camera, but once I got the Halide app on my iPhone XR a few years ago and learned manual control and RAW shooting on that, I've decided to just stick with using the phone. Especially now with my 13 pro Max, the three different lenses cover pretty much any kind of picture I'd taking, dynamic range is pretty good, and just the fact that I will always have my phone with me makes the idea of getting a camera not make much sense any more. Of course having a camera would have its benefits, but the phone has been good enough for me so far, and that's why I'm sticking with it.

Yea I though the future would be to eliminate all screen interruptions and going all under screen or any other solution. The future would always be to make it smaller and smaller until the screen was not interrupted anymore. But I guess Apple just figured they could actually evolve backwards to not make it expensive to produce, and just create a full extra software feature around it and make it the selling point so people would not mind the bigger display interruption. But I do. There is no software in this world that can fix bad hardware. Fck dynamic island, not only is the hole bigger and lower in the screen, it also wiggles and moves around screaming for your attention. The future should be making it unnoticeable, not make it scream to be noticed ... I have no idea what Apple users have in their heads. iOS is great in many things but moves like this from Apple just make me puke and never buy anything from them.

But since the software is all the same, I got used to it really fast… and honestly it didn’t feel like a new phone after a week or so. @Axeiaa
@Axeiaa Жыл бұрын
Think that's more of a 'the market has matured', upgrades end up being incremental rather than revolutionary. There isn't that much that can be improved during these short release cycles anymore. Not just with iPhones btw, it's the same thing in the Android landscape - all new phones are just the same as the old version but a little bit better. There's no massive steps forward in any specific part, there's no new must-have features. 5G is highly overrated, barely ever will you notice an actual difference. You have to be in very specific locations to actually have a faster connection than 4G* and it sure as heck isn't more reliable. USB-C - ehhh, probably won't happen. Apple likes making money off accessories - a many billion $$$ market. USB-C would make them no money, removing the port (as was done with the audiojack) and selling magsafe chargers at a premium (as was done with earpods) is a much better business plan. So you can probably use that iPhone until it stops working or until the urge to want something new and shiny gets too strong. *Do note that having a '5G' icon on the top of the screen doesn't mean you have a 5G connection, it might just be creative marketing. AT&T shows 5G E for a very sub-par 5G but tiny little bit better than 4GB connection (even after lots of controversy about it) and some other carriers pull off some similar nonsense. This along with people not realising 4G can actually already do 100Mbps in ideal real world circumstances and 5G seems more and more like a big marketing campaign to push people to buy new phones and more expensive data plans.

I'm definitely hoping there will be more done with the Dynamic Island; it seems kind of ridiculous that notifications still drop down separately, taking even more screen real estate away, when you have this beautiful area at the top to display them in. I believe in an earlier piece on the 14 Pro (or maybe it was another channel ,I can't remember), someone joked that Apple caught up with the LG V20 and its secondary screen above the main screen. I had one of those, and it was great! Being able to receive calls and see notifications and phone vitals without taking up any screen space was fantastic. The Dynamic Island is a hair's breadth away from that amount of usefulness.

Photographers say that the best camera is the camera you have with you, at the moment a really good photo opportunity presents itself, and that's my iPhone for me. I only take my enormous and now quite ancient DSLR out on special occasions, but my phone is always in my pocket, and ready to go at any time. It is also the best *video camera* I not just have with me but have at all, since I've never owned a dedicated one of those. I actually shot my sister's wedding with my 12 Mini (she gave me strict instructions to not buy any new gear) and got quite respectable results with a little care in preparing the shoot and a fair bit of post-processing.

I care less about the dynamic island than I thought I would and more about the always on display than I expected. At first I was distracted by the always on display constantly noticing it out of the corner of my eye thinking it was a notification turning it on. The dynamic island is useful for sports scores now, but I dislike having to manually enable it for certain games in the third party apps I have tried. I think it will get better over time. It’s great for timers. My favorite two new features are the 48MP camera and the longer battery life.

i got my iphone 14 pro through a phone plan that was available to me through work, and have started using it for photography and recording some videos. the reason i haven't gotten a dedicated camera is because i don't know enough about it to make a decision on buying a product that specifically is for photo/video projects yet. i'm sure if i find myself wanting something more i will go down that road, but the simplicity offered in an iphone - being able to take (in my opinion) great photos and videos - is completely unmatched for me.

I was a staunch defender of the notch. Having gone from an iPhone six to the 10, it always felt like less of the notch imposing itself into the screen, and more like free real estate on either side for the clock and battery instead of having to have a task bar across the top. The hole on the other hand, I hate it. Once you put the little bit of light across the top of it, now it feels like it imposes itself on the screen. I and maybe I would feel differently if I got used to it, but I couldn’t care less about an always on display. And that’s only useful if you’re setting your phone on your desk all the time, but mine is always in my pocket so for me to look at it I have to pull it out anyway. I mainly take photos with an 11 pro max, but I daily an SE 2020 because I much prefer to carry a smaller, lighter phone in my pocket that is less expensive to repair. I’ll take the 11PM out only when I’m going to be taking photos. The only “real camera” I have is about 20 years old, 4mp sensor. Takes great photos unreliably, partly due to age and things not working properly, partly due to me not being a DSLR genius. I find that my 11PM is easier to take amazing photos with on a more consistent basis, and is just tons more portable due to it being phone shaped. Airdrop is another feature that a DSLR won’t have, although newer ones have Bluetooth connectivity though apps. Since I’m not a professional, I don’t see myself buying a relevant DSLR anytime soon when the 11PM is as good as it is. I have really been thinking about trading it in for a 13PM to do the same thing with, but I wish there was a 2x zoom lens like the 11 pros instead of the 3x of the 13 pros… 3x is simply too much for a main lens. Leave that to software

I turned my always on display off after about a week's worth of use, for a number of reasons. Firstly, I found it too distracting as I kept glancing at my phone. Secondly, I found it jarring how I couldn't have 'light mode' on the always on display, meaning every time I unlocked my phone, it basically flipped colours. Yes, I know that would have cost more battery but I'd have liked to have the option. Thirdly, I don't like the 'stacked' notifications view and even if you turn that off, it *keeps* the stacked view for when it's in always-on mode. So when I 'wake' my phone, all the notifications move and I can't see them clearly when it's in always on because they're stacked. In the end, it just didn't feel like it was worth the battery life cost. I agree what you say about the dynamic island and how it's backward. Honestly, I barely use it actively i.e. I never tap on it on purpose but I do think it works well for info purposes and covering up the sensors. The primary reason I always upgrade my iPhone is for the marginal camera improvements because the better the camera you have with you, the more likely you are of capturing moments. However, frustratingly, I can't use ProRaw because you can't do ProRaw while also using the single best feature Apple has ever added; Live Photos. I'd *love* it if you could do both and would then default everything to that but you can't. If I'm planning on taking 'high quality / arty' photos then I'd dig out my DSLR. But I don't do that usually and haven't taken it out with me in *years*. I want to capture moments and I want to capture those moments in the best way I can, which means having the newest iPhone. I'm usually taking pictures of my kids, pets, wife and generally just life. For that, Live Photos is literally unbeatable.

I jumped to the 14 pro max from my XS Max. Was a really nice jump, to get Dynamic Island, magsafe, much better camera and battery, more storage on base size. Generally feels snappier. I just wish there some more customisation with the Dynamic island presses and options with the lock screen customisation.

6:17 Yes. yes I did buy it exclusively for the camera. Quite literally nothing else matters. Phones otherwise aren't doing anything interesting. The dynamic island is okay. I turned off AOD after getting the phone. The increased brightness isn't something I've noticed. The only thing that made a substantial change this year, for me, is the camera. AND BOY DO I LOVE THE CAMERAS ON THIS THING. I cannot express it better than Halide's maker, lux, of which you can look up their review on this camera. Gets it perfectly. For someone like me? I'm still rocking the 8+ too. I really hate the idea of Face ID, is the main thing, although I'm resigned to caving... eventually. I replaced my battery a few months ago which helped a lot and made me less eager to jump to a new one. At this point, assuming my phone holds out, I feel like I should wait for the 15 just so I can finally ditch the lightning connector, and not get stuck with (hopefully) the last generation phone to actually still use such a slow connection. I stick with phones for a LONG time and don't have interest in chasing the bleeding edge, as a general rule. (In other areas, yes, but not so much with phones)

I hope so, I just ordered one today to replace my now three- year old 11 Pro ;-) Then again, I use mine as much as a video and still camera - despite owning two mirrorless DSLR cameras - as I do as an actual phone, so... actually I wouldn't be unhappy if Apple put an M43 lens mount on the bump 😛 the compactness and convenience of an iPhone for shooting video is hard to match when out bushwalking. Setting up a "proper" camera takes forever in comparison and while capable of higher quality obviously, for run-and-gun type filming it's a real pain. The iPhone's auto-HDR video is more than 'good enough', and because it's so fast to deploy, you can capture more usable footage.

I’m using the iPhone X and am still pretty satisfied with its performance even today. Apple did a great job keeping animations smooth and keeping stutter out of older phones. It’s slower, but stutter free and that’s more than good enough. I am excited for the iPhone 15 though, they will be coming with the new 3nm processor from TSMC. That’s my endgame, will upgrade to that and hold it for 5 years.

Completely game changer(of course), in every aspect but mostly battery wise and also screen wise. Next to each other, the 7’s screen looks like garbage. Then again I’m the kind of person who buys the best possible iPhone, keeps it for 6-7 years then buys the next best one. Battery change in between of course. Also I’m not into photography so the iPhone camera is more than enough for my use. Maybe even overkill.

I upgraded from an iPhone 11 (not a pro) to an iPhone 14 Pro. As someone who uses exclusively phones or tablets for video recording and photos, I honestly somehow still prefer my iPhone 11's image processing. Everything on the iPhone 14 Pro just looks over sharpened and zoomed in photos look dirty. And the colors are duller, Photographic styles do a decent job of fixing them s a bit though. But I will say that, I do enjoy the 48 mp photos, especially for making wallpapers. Like, you can take a photo with your iPhone that can make a 6016x6016 wallpapers, which is what macOS uses for the modern default wallpapers. And if you take a landscape photo and want to use it as a wallpaper for a 6K XDR display, or maybe just a 5K one, you have a lot of cropping room. 14 Pro was an instant upgrade when it was announced it has finally a higher MP camera.

I am one of the few who got pro gear handy. Great lens, Canon 1DX (first model), 5D3. I miss the reliability of the shots. I miss the ridiculous ISO of these two models that started to push the envelope. I miss the control for a perfect shot. I miss the 85mm 1.2, or the 120-200 or 300mm lens. I seriously don't miss anything else, though. Night shots are getting great (but not instantaneous), stabilization is way ahead, shot stacking is better on iPhone, and the associated movie makes for a great shot selection and better souvenirs. Integrated GPS means no need to put the dongle that takes 2 minutes to sync to the satellites. Face detection is better. Honestly, the entire experience is better on modern phones. Smaller, less intrusive, feels more natural. Bonus: I probably won't have it stolen, where my camera is always a gamble. Insurance, but still annoying! And the weight ...

1:33 Try turning on Auto brightness. As far as I know iPhones (adn most other phones) will only hit the "peak outdoor" brightness figure when they're on auto brightness, you can't manually crank it up to 2000 nits (well you can manually crank up the brightness but it'll only go up to 1000 nits (which is actually also an increase from the 13 Pro, which had a manual max brightness of 800 nits and the 1000 nit mode was only outdoors). These are the brightness figures for the 13 Pro vs. 14 Pro: 13 Pro Manual/indoors max brightness: 800 nits all-screen HDR content brightness: 800 nits all-screen, 1200 nits specular highlights Auto brightness when ambient light sensor detects a very bright light (like the Sun outdoors): 1000 nits all-screen 14 Pro: Manual indoors max brightness: 1000 nits all-screen HDR content brightness: 1000 nits all-screen, 1600 nits specular highlights Auto brightness outdoors: 2000 nits all-screen
