This channel does something I’ve been requesting a few other Mac channels to do. They sit there and spend multiple videos in a row talking “rumors this,” and “next iPhone that,” when they could spend the off-season between big Apple events doing real Apple content like this iCloud how-to. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea-and it may not get numbers like other Apple-related content-but it’s far more practical and useful for a viewer. Regardless of the variation in performance of videos about tutorials/tips vs reveals/rumors, this is the RIGHT way to run a channel like this-even if the content isn’t as frequent. As for the video itself, I feel like most cloud platforms have offered free services since the beginning as a way to get people dependent on the platforms. I’m not above paying a small amount for cloud storage, especially since I don’t have to purchase the equipment to maintain my own backups. Unfortunately, Apple has gotten very strange about how they manage iCloud, and at this point I think it needs a bit more streamlining.

I suspect Apple haven’t tried to make this easy so they can get that $1 a month from everyone not tech-savvy enough to find Image Capture and copy the files over (which I suspect is a lot of people). Tell your mom to pay the 99¢ a month for the 50 GB iCloud tier and she won't be calling again. You would not know that was a solution since they neglected to mention the Apple solution in a LMG video, as usual. No other solution is as stable or cheap as iCloud.

I have 42 Gb of cloud storage that I got from participating in one event from Yandex. I use their cloud service now a lot. The event was simple: turn on photos sync and get +30 or +40 (I don't remember exactly) GB of storage. Forever. The neat part is that the cloud-synced photos do not take the cloud storage, so basically free. So now I have 42GB of cloud storage, taken up by everything I want everywhere and the photos are just synced without bothering my mind. Nothing apple in this.

Great video! Would you like to do one on the space taken by "Documents and Data" by some apps and how to delete it? Why is Reddit using 1GB of storage on my phone? Or Amazon using 600MB?? There is zero need to keep any kind of history for this apps and there seems to be no clear way to delete it besides removing and re-installing each app.
@jarboer3 жыл бұрын
It's cache data like temporary photos, videos, and other data the app downloads. To remove it some apps have a remove cache button (like Snapchat). The other way to do it without deleting the app is to go to Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data. Then either delete certain site data or press Remove All Website Data. Either way will require you to resign into sites and they may load slower since it has to re-download the data, instead of using the cached data (like for site icons and images). It's also important to note the Remove All Website Data will DELETE ALL OF YOUR SAFARI TABS, I learned this the hard way. So if you have tabs you'd like to keep bookmark them, to bookmark all of them hold the book icon in Safari and click Add Bookmarks for # Tabs.

@@jarboer Nice tip but worked only on some apps: Reddit and Google Maps storage usage heavily reduced but for example Amazon still using 450MB of Documents and Data. Oh well…
@jarboer3 жыл бұрын
@@botinhas82 Yea some apps store it differently. Apps that use the in-app safari like Reddit really benefit from that method of clearing website data but not every app does. Does Amazon have a cache button in its in-app settings? Otherwise unfortunately you’ll have to delete it manually or if you aren’t to low on storage you could ignore it as well.

Great video. Well researched. I use Photo Stream (didn’t know I was lucky) to consolidate all my photos on my Mac and then backup the library to a NAS and to Backblaze in the Cloud. A few years ago I even made it work with two iCloud accounts Photo Streaming into a single shared Photos Library on the Mac, unfortunately later versions of Photos and Mac OS “broke” this feature. Yeah, I love my iPhone, but there are some things about it that are simply inadequate. The solution is third party apps that allow better access to the files on the iPhone. It's not that hard, from a computer point of view. Apple just makes it frustratingly impossible for mere mortals.

After years of Jailbreaks and second hand iPhones, I lost some of the best pictures I’ve ever taken from a friends wedding and I decided that paying for more storage was just the only way to avoid this problem. I still need to download from iCloud every now and then if I want a copy, or from the phone as I have the originals there to save space on iCloud, but it’s better than a complete loss like what I have had before. And I still miss so many things from jailbreaks… god the lockscreen and keyboard management suck on iPhone stock.

The app data bit is what caused my iCloud storage to fill up instantly and I started getting notifications that my storage was full on the third day. Turns out that iCloud, in its infinite wisdom, was trying to back up _all of the assets for Genshin_ which totalled to a hilarious 22 GB. For asset data that the game itself basically can treat as expendable, since actual save data is managed on Mihoyo's servers, not Apple's.
