The iPhone 13 Pro has enough camera features that it might deserve the professional moniker. With three different zoom levels and ProRes codec recording, it might be good enough to replace our video cameras. Well, we rig it up, shoot with it and see what results the phone can give us.

"Getting the absolute highest quality the phone can give" is actually one of the highest compliments you can offer software. Lots of software does not take full advantage of, or gets in the way of, hardware's full capabilities. Thank you for this real world use case demonstration.

And sometimes that software is written that way, so that a more expensive product can come out, without the restrictions, but with a premium price tag, something Apple has no need to do in this day-and-age.
@YourMJK

Well, it's not exactly true. With ProRes 422 it's still chroma subsampled to 4:2:2. To take full advantage of the sensor you'd need 4:4:4. But the phone probably isn't fast enough to write such huge amounts of data, so it's also kinda true.
@WorstDeveloper

@@teg24601 But that's exactly what Apple IS doing. They're known for restricting their devices to create artificial product segmentation. The 128GB versions of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max don't offer all the video features that were demoed at the unveiling. If you buy the 128GB version then ProRes video is limited to 1080p at 30fps. In order to get the full 4K at 30fps you will need to cough up an extra $100 and buy the 256GB versions.

I knew instantly that the shots were done on a phone. Cinema glass looks different (different warping at the edges, shorter DoF unless you’re stopped down to like T-8, and the shots were a wider focal length than would normally be used for a video like this). That said, the quality was still excellent. Just because you can tell the difference doesn’t mean one is “worse” than another.

This was such a creative episode. While I missed Andy's camera work, I loved it. I'm used to camera video losing depth of field, but this video certainly didn't lose much, if any. Given how much happier Premier was, according to Hoffman, working with ProRes video, would it not behoove LMG to look into moving to cameras that used similar technologies. If it makes the editing process, at the expense of file sizes and storage requirements, that seems like a pretty good trade off? Unless they already are, but some interstitial issue is causing Premier issues.

From what I’d heard from a Wan Show, they’re moving to Sony FX6s, if they hadn’t already. It doesn’t natively support ProRes, however, the FX6 can output a raw feed to an external recorder which can then encode to ProRes.

Even if it's only minor it's still a huge cost. And of course Apple Certified cables, they do generate Apple a fair chunk of income, not enough to cause a hindrance to their income, but enough to say "hmm I DO like this extra bonus so maybe I will keep it" Eventually they're gonna have to use USB-C however, I doubt people will support a full wireless system

I get random mystery notification sounds on my iPhone sometimes, but NEVER on the Mac(s). I'm not keen on the idea of taking video - or even photos - on my iPhone. My small collection of mirrorless Sonys have better looking output by a massive margin and I find the results far easier to manage with memory cards and 3rd party applications. The iPhone is only used for inconsequential images for notetaking or quick communication purposes. I feel like what you’re also asking is “are dedicated camera professionals still necessary?” and the answer has been, is, and forever shall be YES. (as an amateur who has shot video on iPhones since before it was supported.)

from the thumbnail and title, I assumed it was shot on an iphone, but it was really high quality. one shot seemed to jump from one iphone camera to another abruptly, not sure if that was a zoom in done in editing or an actual camera switch in software while shooting.

i could tell from the opening shots. i expected the video to be far better than my 12's camera, but it's not so professional that i'd consider upgrading tbh. I'll happily wait a few years. maybe 2 or 3 minimum

I often shoot video in Dolby Vision 1080 and It really lifts the lighting and white balance quality and KZbin automatically creates an SDR and HDR versions. Gives very nice indoor lighting.

I had never knows what 4:2:2 was or that HEVC only did chroma per four pixels. I always learn something new with this show!

HEVC supports various chroma sampling formats. They're probably just referring to what the HEVC encoding format of some device or software offers. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Efficiency_Video_Coding#Profiles

I am thinking on starting to shoot some videos and interviews with a similar setup you proposed and some lights to help. In the end is about how your viewers watch the videos. If they will end up watching it while sitting on the toilet, does it really matter if it’s in an ultra high resolution? It just has to be good enough but I feel extremely good might not be worth it, or would be benefited by a very small subset of viewers to justify the extra efforts. Just my two cents.

The lightning port is the only thing stopping me from upgrading to a 13 pro this year. I’m praying the 14 switches to USB C and also the cheaper mid range model comes with 120hz display as I’m not much of a photo taker

You are more likely to get USB3 compatible Lighthing rather than USB C on the iPhone... for many, varied reasons.

@@teg24601 Actually I think Europe just put through a new law stating all phones and devices need to have USB C within the next 2 years, so the question is whether it'll be the 14 or 15. I agree though that Apple wouldn't switch it if they had the choice

I thought the interior shots looked a bit flat, but it's fine for what was needed. It's pretty good if all you already have an iPhone in your pocket & want to shoot something, but it's not replacement for a real video camera. High bitrates are nice, but you need a decent lens if you really want to be 'pro'.
