ive been riding road bikes for a year now and my fixed gear for about 6 months. Im tired of seeing people say that people who ride fixie's are hipsters. To me, people who ride bmx bike's with the seat all the way down, wannabe skater clothes that cant do any tricks and just have it to look cool, are the hipsters. People who ditched their car for a bike, like me, who get from point a to b on a bike in all weather, and who put 50+ miles a week on their bike, are not hipsters. I have a steel frame, neon green with black rims ss/fixie that i have probably put 600+ miles on if not more.

true, tho don't forget that there are a few of us out there who have been at it for over 20yrs, BMX and my bones at this age i wouldn't risk so i mainly cruise, but it's been my life, so are many out there who might be alike. Just the same as fixies don't make hipsters but they have tleast equal amount of people who have it for show too.

Exactly! Tomorrow I have a 10am class and it is going to snow and be in the teens! I have a car but I do not drive it because of reasons. Put around 7-14 miles a day 5 days in a row, not counting having fun on weekends ha, I don't measure that. However tomorrow with snow, great day for some footage! Even if I can't feel my face, makes you feel more alive.

U know the seat of a bmx is designed like that for a reason right? And i have no problem with fixed gear cause i have one myself but they only say its hipster because the gear is fixed and its how the old bikes work before freewheel sprockets

Fixed gears are bikes that have a single gear that is directly attached to the hub and does not coast. You can go uphill and downhill but once your moving you cannot stop pedaling

@OxygenMcgee since you skid by leaning on your handlebars, try gradually moving your body away from the handlebars and perform a skid. like at first you start off full on leaning on your handlebars, master that, then try moving away from the handlebars, master that, then in the middle between your seat and handlebars, master that etc. eventually you'll just be able to stand up and skid. it could be your legs maybe they're not buffed out yet just keep practicing they'll come along

A fixie is often ridden without brakes.. using the pedals to slow down.. This causes the back wheel to skip out and sometimes crash, sometimes the stuttering is so violent that the feet are jerked from the pedals. Both the lack of front brakes and the fixed gear are a cause of accidents, and add huge hills to that mixture... the you have a perfect storm.

So much hate for the fixies! I ride fixed doing deliveries on a college campus in Houston- where it is completely and utterly flat. Not all fixed riders are bombing hills, running every stop signal and skidding the shit out of every stop. I'll ride weeks sometimes without skidding! It's just plain fun and low maintenance.

Have you ever stopped to think people like riding Brakeless because they enjoy that extra element of danger? Riding Brakeless is unique, and most of the time you adapt your riding style when Brakeless anyway. And you think more.

I remember growing up everybody had pegs, cards, and wheels like that. We would tote people on our pegs while the other person was toted between the handle bars! Back then we could ride our bikes without labels. Now you don't see pegs on bikes or cards in spokes hardly anymore. =(

Exactly, out of riding brakeless for four years daily and having a few accidents none could have been prevented by brakes, a quick enough reaction would have sent me over the bars anyway. I am getting a brake though so I am club legal for long road rides with roadies.

Because it's so simple, no gears and all, you have to make nearly perfect chain rings and cogs to reduce rocking in the drive train. Professional track racers, not mashers or messengers, suffer greatly with even the slightest imperfection, those most parts are machined and hand polished rather than pressed out of a sheet. Time and materials = greater cost.

No most people ride with no brakes for many reasons but its A LOT safer to ride with at least one brake on. i still have my back brake on, not because i cant skid, its just that its safer because my back brake saved my life about 3 times.

They say I need to grow up and get a car now bcuz girl dont want a boy in a bike. I kinda believe them but idk.. I still enjoy biking am even thinking of buying another bike but everyone tell me to save up for a car now. Am I just getting to old for this? Since I am the only one with a bike now. Or should I continue riding but now solo

I don't see why so many people have a problem with those who ride without a brake, its all the individual not the bike and if someone decides that they want to push harder than they're ready to push its not gonna matter whether they have a brake or not because it all boils down to experience. And if someone has a break and they're gonna rear end a car and they're not ready for that what's gonna change? Nothing
