One idea for the future: in this video you concentrated on the creative workflows, which makes sense, as it is what you are doing the most. But I think it would add a lot to have developer perspective as well, and LMG has a unique opportunity as it has almost-in-house development team working on Floatplane. Maybe do some tests building Floatplane app, running it in emulator etc. This could also promote Floatplane at the same time. Good video nevertheless!

This is my complaint with most KZbin reviews of the new MB pros. They all focused on creatives and not everyone else which is a bit dumb. There are so many fields in science that could use the power but no one ever runs mapping, modeling and simulation software that people in science use.

I got the 14" 10-16-16-Core M1 Pro with 512 GB. I saved on storage because a 2 TB NVME SSD and USB C enclosure is only ~200-300$ (whereas Apple charges 600$). I have noticed though that the external SSD is about 20% slower on the MacBook Pro 14" (700 MB/s) than on my 2017 iMac 27" (900 MB/s). I have tried all sorts of combinations of ports (internal and on my CalDigit Dock). I even went to an Apple Store and ran benchmarks on all Apple Silicon and a few Intel Macs they had and found that the external SSD speeds on Apple Silicon consistently were 20% slower than on Intel. Weirdly the only combination that worked with full speed on Apple Silicon was using the second Thunderbolt port on the dock. Hopefully this can be fixed in Firmware

I got a base model upgraded to 16 GB of RAM (I feel like at this point 16 should be the minimum on laptops) and so far it’s been phenomenal for my casual video editing. I haven’t been pushing it too hard, but cutting a gameplay video with a handful of edits and lite effects in DaVinci barely eats at the battery, only got the machine to a slightly warm (but still comfortable) temperature, and was very smooth the whole way through. @@killerlion6 the setup where I was running into most issues has 16 docker containers running which provide stubs, plus the main service container. Couple of pycharm projects opened at the same time usually to cross reference, one of them is running in a venv so that’s low impact but the other one has to start up its own container with packages. And then chrome, not many tabs usually. Can I fit into 16GB? Yes, but it is a hassle to constantly micro manage ram consumption… I remember having to turn of some of the containers before I joined a meeting because otherwise the webcam would be choppy on the other end and my computer would chug pretty hard… I am much happier now ;)

I use python for data analysis and got the base model 14” inch two weeks ago. By running a few codes, I used over 10 gb ram and experienced memory swap a few times. For coding and program development, you need the extra ram go 32 at least if you can. The base isn’t that bad but I don’t think it’ll hold up well down the road.

Just bought the base 14” and I love it. Runs cool and quiet, power brick is smaller, and its more powerful than my 2014 15” MBP. Handbrake x265 rencoding take half the time and i can actually use Video Enhance AI now. It was unusable on my old MBP.

I went with the base model 2021 M1 Pro Pro (wow, what a mouthful). I did make one upgrade to the base model, and that was to go from 512GB to 1TB. Additionally, I paid the extra $20 for the 96w charger.

I have the base model 14” as I’m just a beginner in 3D Modelling. Also wanted to move away from my gaming PC to something nice and quiet. In Blender you can certainly notice the performance. I’m just blown away by how these Apple silicon based Macs turn up and completely destroy the competition. These products are worth every penny and will just get better as more companies transition to Apple silicon. Great video btw :)

@@msagoo29 that's great to hear! I've been trying to choose between the 14 and 16 inch. How do find the portability of it? I've seen a few people complain it's too heavy/unpractical and go for the 14 inch.

@@Mandem909 My laptop is mainly at home so portability isn't important to me, but compared to my previous 2019 13" Pro, it is much bigger and heavier, I tried the 14", but I preferred the bigger screen for movies, the 14" is still a heavy chunky machine. You guys do realize it’s almost impossible to find a review for mac books that are NOT done by/for video editors :) It sounds like these laptops are only an option to buy for video/image professionals and the rest of the IT industry guys should go to other products. I am really curious to view an overall product review covering more usage scenarios, it would be a breath of fresh air. Maybe you can surprise us with something like this .

Been using the 15” late 2013 16gb ram 512gb retina model and upgraded to the 14” base model. It’s almost like Apple designed this MacBook for 14” and scaled it up for the 16” model. It’s just lighter, the trackpad is not ridiculously large, flex of the display lid and bottom is less than on the 16”, speakers are almost the same, lid is thinner, having same ports… It is just the most efficient choice

But: - the battery is a lot smaller - the screen is pretty small, damn i would even wish at my 16" the screen would be 19" or so... - the bezel is slightly bigger on the 14" - speakers... almost the same? yes, ALMOST.... but still a huge difference at least in direct comparison. - directly 10/16C unbinned chip in the base model Thats why i took the 16" (and also because i saw on my mums 14" convertible that 14" wont be enough for me anyways). I came from a 2010 15" MacBook Pro midclass model with better CPU and 512MB GPU which served me well for over 10 years now but its too slow, upgrade needed.

I'm leaning towards at least getting 32G of ram and 1TB ssd. I upgraded my current macbook pro(15" 2011) to 1TB SSD and 16GB of ram, and I don't know if I can survive with less storage with editing video. I am however definitely glad I held out for the larger macbook pro.

I'd go 2TB and stay at 16GB (assuming you can't do both within budget) The new SSDs are so fast, it can fallback to swap easily anyway if you run out. The 2TB SSD would be way more important long-term imo

I ended up getting the base 14 inch macbook pro. The main reason was that with the black friday deals going on here, the gap between this and the 1TB model was a bit much. I always prefer having more storage and ram, but for my day to day usage it's clear that the base 14inch is more than enough performance for me. We'll see how that ages over the next 4-5 years

One thing I'm really intersted to know about it how well these new Macs do with running Blender. This is my main focus and I'm aware that a powerful GPU or very powerful CPU is necessary to ensure that the vieport it updating quickly and renders don't take ages. I'd love to see this tested in Blender or similar programs such as Unreal or Maya - specifically with how the viewport functions with large scenes, rendering large images or animations and physics simulations. Traditionally Macs haven't been great at this stuff but it would be great if this was a portable blender machine. I'm so over having a windows desktop beast.

Just upgraded from the M1 Pro to the base model M1 Pro, Pro mainly because of the display. I understand why the display is limited to the PRO models but its annoying cause I know this thing is WAY over powered for what I use it for, but the screen at 120 HZ and mini LED for content viewing is just such a nice upgrade. Only thing I'm not seeing being talked about is a flicker when scenes go from Dark to bright light. Not sure if this is something that apple will address eventually, but its been an issue on the iPads with mini LED and seems to continue to have the issue on this machine.
