The M1 MacBook Pro with M1 Pro and M1 Max has just released to much fanfare. These devices have a ton of interest from the general public after the addition of HDMI, and SD card slot, a high-impedance headphone jack, improved cooling, and more-even if that means it has to have a notch.

@@unlink1649 that’s just not fair. The reason is youtubers spend a lot of time editing videos. Every 10ish minute video you watch has a day or many days behind them, it’s not as if youtubers spend the length of time it takes to render them only. It’s many many hours out of their video production work. What other workload would you suggest? What is repeatable, will show a significant difference, and replicates real world applications?

19:48 There is a way to do that. Since MacOS Monterey you can go to "System Preferences -> Dock & Menu Bar" At the Bottom you can then uncheck the option "Automatically hide and show the menu bar in full screen". If you do this, the menu bar will alway be visible, even when you go into full screen mode

I actually like how the fullscreen mode hides the menu bar, if im in a fullscreen app I want to be immersed in that app. Another nice change here is that when hovering on the menu bar in a fullscreen app it no longer pushes down that fullscreen app which was very annoying and caused a lot of accidental clicks.
@halami2149
@halami2149 2 жыл бұрын
Yesssss omg that was always so annoying. And it instantly appears when you hover over it on this MacBook, before you had to hold your mouse there and wait for a moment. Then it pushes down on everything, which would sometimes even glitch out the app I was in. I just gave up and just expand the window to the corners of the screen, and I always have the dock hidden. And I changed the dock appearing speed to be instant, so as soon as my mouse is down there, it shows up

Glad he's doing that too. To be fair though, most of the time other tech youtubers do do other types of tests, people in those professions/hobbies yell at them for not doing a hard enough test or not doing the test right or not doing something that mirrors their exact specific workflow. People get very "stick to what you know", which to KZbinrs is video editing. So it's understandable that those are the tests they focus on. Why is no one asking why aren't there more software developer or data science or 3D Graphics KZbinrs running these tests themselves?

@@VMYeahVN speaking in terms of my interests - there is plenty of people testing PCs for 3D computer graphics purposes, I can get all the GPU or CPU benchmarks and info I need from KZbin. It’s specifically people testing macs for 3D where it’s lacking, and that’s largely because historically there has been little or no support for the GPUs Macs are using (no Nvidia on Mac). The industry is in a transition period now where suddenly with these Apple GPUs will make it viable. But it’s very niche at the moment (literally these are the first computers with the new GPU, and software isn’t yet supporting them for a few months at least) and just not that many people using Macs for 3D.

thank you for diving deep into the notch, you're the first one i've seen who went beyond "it moves behind the notch" and actually went into experimenting with the left menu items and the right menu icons and how they would interact when the bar was full. thanks for also covering the things i never thought to wonder, like the cursor behaviour for the rounded corners, and charing from all the ports. i was really excited when they said anodised keyboard, i thought finally a company would make keys that could withstand wear and tear and not get shiny (i still love the glass trackpad for its material and not looking worn years later). but it seems like the keys themselves are still plastic and it's only the well that's anodised. not that anodising would be 100% resilient but i was wondering if it'd be (and also a grainier texture, perhaps).

The one reason I’d want to tuck a tiny SD card in the slot is so the computer can have a time machine backup on board. I’d back up my user drive to iCloud, but for the rest, I’d use the tiny SD card. I don’t really care about speed in that case. It’s still going to be faster than restoring TimeMachine over the network. I did that the other day and it took a day and a half.

The interaction with the menu bar is something developers have to put in their code, there’s documentation now. Also, personally I like using full screen as a “focus mode”, so I like the menu bar not being there, but I want it there in non-fullscreen.
@Millahtime
@Millahtime 2 жыл бұрын
You can leave the menu bar visible in full screen mode, its an option in settings!! Default is turned off. The area of the notch is likely defined as a "safe area" in macOS, very similarly to how iOS does it. Since menus are just standard system UI, the safe area is already baked into the AppKit APIs. However, since menu bar apps are distinct apps, its very likely that developers will need to update to recognize the new "safe area." Hence why iStat menus can disappear behind the notch, while menu bar items will wrap around the notch. I don't expect this to be an issue for very long. The notch is brand new to macOS! On top of that, menu bar apps need a proper overhaul in macOS. They've always kind of been like a hack. macOS needs a system for managing menu bar apps. I would expect a collapsible list icon to be added to the menu bar very soon to Monterey.

I just learned this from John Siracusa yesterday. Pretty insane and can't believe that's the solution. Apple needs to Sherlock Bartender and just fix the whole issue.

Curious how iStatMenus looks when you change the display to "More Space" scaling. Also worried the menu bar will look insane in 'More Space' because it can't get thinner due to the notch...
@patrickbryant_
@patrickbryant_ 2 жыл бұрын
I went and checked one out at an Apple Store today, didn’t have iStatMenus but I can confirm that with “More Space” display scaling the menu bar stays the same height while all the items in it get smaller. Looks a bit strange but makes sense given the notch.

got to ask. Was that a 14" or 16" MacBook Pro used in that review and what was the screen size? I'm wondering if the 16" model would have the same issues with the menu bar due to its much bigger screen size and resolution. I always run at max res (more space option) Also, it appears you need 2tb or higher storage to get the higher speed SSD

Do you think that these chips could eventually have a high performance mode where they chew more power but output a crap ton of performance? I think that since they use less power and therefore run cooler; they could get OverVolted.

I can imagine some apps having issues if they've done some hacky stuff with the menus in the title bar. But I totally agree with the title bar in fullscreen mode. I would love to be able to see time, battery status and stuff like that while having apps in fullscreen mode (since fullscreen mode have other nice features compared to maximized window).

Damn that notch is janky. I was skeptical and curious about the sofware solutions they had for it and really hoped the "appled" it. But no that's some A level jankiness. I hope they fix that with future versions of MacOS Edit: The rest of it is amazing though.

the app menus taking over the right side menus are not new to this mac, it happens on all macs. the easiest way to do this is by setting a mac to a really low resolution or connecting a really old monitor to it. I would say istat probably needs an update for the new macs to handle it properly. any yes apple could help with updating
