Yeah, in the pile of videos I've watched and the articles I've read, I really needed this reality check. I plan to keep if for a long time, so it was between a well equipped M4 Pro vs a lower M4 Max. Omg same, I ordered a M4 Pro 14c/20gpu and today I start seeing the M4 Max benefits aka Dual Engine and faster bandwidth, but it was either 500$ more for Max 36 gb or 1000$ more for Max 48 gb; not sure if it's worth that much for waiting just a bit longer to render a video.

I've tried using the MAX, the PRO and the Base M4 and honestly, there's a good difference and if you're a professional - you get paid to do your work - the MAX is worth the extra money. I work with heavy photoshop files and just a simple enlargement of a single image from 10 to 40 inches with layers and renders takes 2m40s on the M4, 1m34 on the M4Pro and 36 seconds on the M4Max... I do this many times a day and so for me, I see I huge difference in my speed... I agree it's not that much difference but after waiting around for 10 files in an hour, it does add up quickly. And I thhink the main reason it's faster is the RAM limits - you can't get more than 48 GB or ram on a MBProM4PRO chip - so when you have a 128GB MAX chip, even though the single core numbers are almost the same, the RAM really makes the difference - and the only way to have more than 48 gb is with the MAX chip thanks to the way Apple limits us when customizing our computers.

I did get the specked out PRO but like I said, it's maxed out at 48GB ram... and I had 64GB on my M1Max and it would often hit the yellow in my RAM monitor so there was no way I was going to make it through with the M4Pro at 48gb. I'm sure that if I could have put 96 or 128 in the PRO version, it would have been very much sufficient... but alas... not possible. Funny that the M4 MacMini allows up to 64gb?? I don't understand that one.

The Max offers 546 GB/s on RAM whereas the Pro is 273 Gb/s. Is that difference every noticed? From your post, saving 60 seconds on a 90 second recurrent work task is huge!!

Yes, it's excellent for every day use in fact I just recently used Ps for a basic edit. I will keep using it until it stops working. Bought in 2017. I think maybe Apple must have had this line for some time. Bummed they stopped making the 15".

@@andrecreates it's fundamentally my main machine that I use for work and having multiple screens is invaluable if you need to reference between different applications or systems without switching around a lot. I also run a few VMs to keep some environments separated and experiment without compromising the primary machine, eg I have Linux and Windows to get around any application limitations on the Mac plus keep all data separated. I also do some photography and until recently was using GIMP but am now running Photomator and Pixelmator. Lastly I have some LLMs that I'm playing with, and have used some generative AI to prototype ideas for shoots - kind of like a storyboard. I've used those images when working with models to better convey what we are trying to get out of a shoot in advance.

I feel the MAX options are simply there as a long-term investment. 10 - 15+ years down the line, it should still be quite flawless for general use. I built my computer for 2K about 5 - 7 years ago, only started lagging more often recently. As for the other M4 models, they should be flawless for years to come as well.

Quick question... I needed to grab a new MacBook, I use programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Premiere, and also Logic for music production. I am not editing long movies above 4k or anything but I do tend to have a lot of windows open and available. I am trying to decide on the MacBook M4 Pro 24gb RAM or the M4 Max with 36GB RAM. I got a deal with $300 off on the MAX so it's only $400 more than the PRO. These are both 1TB machines. SO the PRO is $2399 and the MAX is $2799 at these specs. . Any thoughts would be helpful. m4 pro is the sweet spot. I upgraded from a 12 years old macbook pro, it seems the right choice for me as "content creator", especially for nice gpu, long battery life etc...

"If you're going for the M4 Max, you're paying purely for the extra power". I mean, that's kinda the point, and why I ordered a base model M4 Max today, lol. Although the Max also gives you an extra 12GB RAM, and double the SSD space, if we're talking comparing base models. If 24GB is too weedy for your needs, you gotta pay an additional £400 on the M4 Pro. So in 14" 1TB MBPs, it's £2799 (M4 Pro) vs £3199 (M4 Max) to go from 20 GPU cores to 32. Add £300 to this for a 40-core GPU MBP. GPU cores are important for Photo and video editing, and gaming. I think the base Max is the sweet spot. I'll try it out for a few months and if I need more, I'll upgrade.

Even if you add the extra $400, you get 48gb of RAM vs 36gm on the max; the same amount of CPU cores, 4 hour better battery Iife (video streaming according to apple) etc, but lose out on 12 gpu cores. Definitely the max will be faster especially during the video rendering, but when talking about value and sweet spot, I think that is the m4 pro this year

Maybe I won't max out its resources today, or tomorrow, but in 5 years time when this is still my main laptop, it will still be able to hold its own. The consideration in almost all the videos I've watched is only ever for how it performs today. I got 5 years out of my 2019, and paid about 4200 for it, so it cost 840 a year. If I had skipped upgrading a bunch of stuff then it would have cost maybe 2800 / 560 a year. I spend most of my day with it, so having an extra 280 in my pocket per year is basically nothing, to get to drive around in a supercar every day. I'm planning 16" max, 4tb, 64gb ram, nano texture, and so far all the calls for caution that I see in video reviews amount to a rounding error spread over the lifetime of the device vs the daily experience. I cannot see the point in being restrained.

as a developer it means alot for me , minimum of 64 Ram is a must .. why ? i run emulators and large databases even for CPU side I need more cores for faster compile times since we as developers keep running and hot reloading our projects 99.9% of the time during the development and testing so ya its truly means a lot for us but for storage meh .. we don't really care about anything higher than 1 TB since we run everything from server or nas or external drives . that's just my workflow and my IMO for example a binned m3 max vs m4 max unbinned that is almost 35 % to 45 % boost , IMO not worth upgrading unless you get decent resell value with your m3 max otherwise wait for m5 max for a proper jump like around 50% maybe more who knows what apple hides for the future with m5's

Larger screen size is a huge asset or a huge curse, depending on one's uses. I personally have no desire for the 16. I use my 14 as a desktop 60+% of the time; it's connected to a 27" monitor. But I also travel with it, take it out and about some... And the 14 is just so much easier to handle. So I think screen size is really a personal choice. Most reviews would say the sound quality is a little better on the 16". The larger size allows better cooling if you're really pushing it. But most it comes down to screen size vs size and weight.

I think anyone trying to run native AI, specifically those who want to max out Stable DIffusion's abilities or run a 30B+ LLM, will need the Max simply because of the 128GB option. I couldn't quite afford that, so I went with a maxxed out M4 Pro Mini with 64GB of Ram. I'm hoping it's up to the task. We'll just have to see.

I'm finding reviewers solely focus on the power performance difference between Pro and Max. I've had to purchase an M4max machine, even though I don't do graphics intensive work, as it's the only way I can get the extra addressing to support 8TB of onboard storage, which is my absolute priority after a history of dragging external ssd's around containing very large orchestral sample libraries. I'm effectively using the M4max as an M4pro machine, but a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

@@shizukajones3307 CPU’s are the same in both. *GPU* is 20 cores in the M4Pro 14/20 chip and 32 cores in the 14/32 Max chip. The Max chip also has double the media encoders.

No, Apple makes it easier. When you go buy a MacBook every step of the way you have a hint that lets you know which configuration is best for your requirements. Also there’s a wizard that gives you a couple options after asking some questions about how you will use your Mac. More options is good

I think in a fourteen inch chassis the M4 Pro 12/16 is the right solution. I think 14/20 is a bit too much in terms of heat dissipation. They should have given the possibilty to put 36 Gb of Ram. I think I stay with the 24 Gb model. At least in Italy 460 Euros for having 48 Gb instead of 24 is too much.

for video the m4 max is a diffrent league vs the pro its x2 for encoding time. the M4 Max have double Bandwith and x2 video encoders.

I use Lightroom classic and photoshop simultaneously, the both use about 15-18 GB together, and the memory pressure goes yellow at about 60%, so I am worried about choosing 24GB.

Oh, that’s a complete different story then. Did you consider a Mac Studio or Mac mini m4 pro? Or do you need the portability? Because, you can get a lot more performance for much cheaper.. Even the current Mac Studio M2 Max will be a powerhouse and the new Mac mini with M4 Pro with 32Gb RAM and 1TB SSD will cost you $1399. You need the 48GB version if you need the portability though.

@@andrecreates I need the portability. Price doesn’t matter, I will go for the newest MacBook Pros. But that doesn’t mean I want to spend money for a configuration I don’t need. The only thing where I am still undecided is the RAM. If 48 is too much for my needs, I rather spend the price difference on a new lens.

Ok, the thing is, 24gb will probably not be enough and the only upgrade you can do is to 48Gb. At the very least will give you more headroom and you’ll be able to do the work without even thinking about the computer. It will help you do the work faster, I believe it’s the best decision as an investment for your work.

M3 Max or M4 Pro???

I’m stuck between going with the 16” M4P 14/20 48Ram 512GB or the 16” M4M 14/32 36ram 1TB for video editing in Davinci resolve studio. Idk if the performance bump from the chip and SSD is worth an extra $800. If the 14” M4M didn’t have heating issues I would just get that but too many people are saying it’s a hotbox. Also, I need the laptop within the next day or two and these are the only options in store I’d have to wait over 2 weeks to get a custom one and I have no machine right now for my work so I’m on a time crunch.

I don’t know what kind of videos you’re doing but if they are really intensive i would definitely choose the Max. I believe it’s the 14” that it’s having those problems but to be honest, from what I’ve seen, it’s always running benchmarks tests which push them to the limit. In my case, editing Slog3 10bit 4:2:2 10/15m videos I have no problem whatsoever

Nop.. I own the M3 Max 14c/30c, 36GB RAM, 1TB SSD. And when it came out a lot of people, on KZbin, were saying the same thing about overheating… never experienced that. Again, it’s just my opinion, but people should be actually testing these machines by working with them… with stress tests of course it will heat.. it’s like putting a car doing drag races for an hour..kind of.🤷‍♂️

I needed 8TB for work so I went for the Max. It was nice to get 64GB, but if would have settled for 48 if I could have gotten the large drive.

I got a better example of making a mistake. Imagine spending 2500Euro on a laptop, to discover it comes with a cringe outdated OS, full of bloatware, that is edged out by just using a comand line in other OS. Even their iPad os is better then that crap, and iPad OS is really bad. User experience with this shit abysmal to say the very least, and the worse part of it is the fact you can't fucking put anything else on it.

Not everyone is a video or photo editor. Thoseextra GPU cores make a big difference in gaming, if you have the money.

Yeah, but M1 Max 32 GPU cores (which I have) is level of Nvidia 3050 and M4 Max 40 GPU cores only 50% faster which is level probably of 3070/4070 for gaming
