Is 16 GB enough for AI, browsing the web, office apps and photo editing?

For what I understand, 16GB of RAM should be fine for browsing, office apps, and photo editing, especially on Apple devices since they handle memory really well. For AI, it depends. If you’re just running AI tools in the cloud, like ChatGPT, it’s more than enough. But if you’re doing heavier stuff like training machine learning models locally, 16GB might feel a bit tight. In that case, 32GB would give you more breathing room.👌Hope that helps!

the thing is m4 at amazon is 1799 with 24 ram and 1 tb while the m4 pro base with 24 ram and 512 is 1749, I think its better to have that extra power for less than 512 of storage, am i wrong?

Thanks for the video! I went with the M4 base model. I tossed 2 iPhone clips into a timeline on premiere, totaling 10 seconds. Added an adjustment layer. It took 2 minutes to render a 10 second clip and the fans kicked into full gear. Is there a chance I got a faulty unit?

I've been a Windows user my whole life, but I’m considering purchasing my first MacBook for general use and development of personal projects. I plan to use it for tools like Xcode and JetBrains IDEs, programming in things like C#, Swift, Python etc, i may run programs in containers with Docker, and Virtual machines maybe (or not) Would the base M4 with 16GB RAM be sufficient for a few years? I want to future-proof my setup as much as possible. I’m also torn between storage options. Both models are priced at £1999: MacBook Pro 2024 14.2in M4, 24GB RAM, 1TB Storage MacBook Pro 2024 14.2in M4 Pro, 24GB RAM, 512GB Storage The Pro model has less storage but potentially more performance. For my use case, which includes programming, and general multitasking, which would you recommend? I don't do video editing at all. I would love some advice 🙏

Hi there! Both options are great, but based on what you’ve shared I’d lean toward the MacBook Pro M4 with 24GB RAM and 1TB storage. Here’s why: For programming and multitasking, the M4 chip is already super powerful, and having the extra storage (1TB) will give you more flexibility for large projects, files, or dependencies without needing external drives. The M4 Pro does have more performance, but for your use case (programming and general multitasking), the difference probably won’t be that noticeable. On the other hand, running out of storage can become a headache over time. So, if it were me, I’d go for the extra storage and still have plenty of power for everything you described! Hi! I’m going to buy a MacBook Pro soon, but I’m not sure which one to buy: M4 seems very well balanced especially for the use in computer science and physics master degree. However, the M4 pro with 24 gb ram and more power is very tempting. I’d go with the M4 pro to future-proof and mostly to have some extra ram and power, even for some rare gaming. What is stopping me is the fact that the M4 pro is less efficient for light tasks, since it has less efficiency cores. What do you think? I typically use maylab, Xcode, many browser tabs, and sometimes a virtual machine. I’m going to keep it for the next 6 years minimum

Agree that the base m4 pro model sounds like it would be a good fit for you. You probably won’t outgrow it in that time period, but if you do, you could always resell it and upgrade to the current base level MacBook Pro. The base level computers generally have a great resell value. Upgrades, while expensive when you purchase it from Apple, typically have a minor impact on the resell price later on.

Hey!! I didn’t notice any differences to be honest. With both I got around 2 days (maybe 20 hours) of usage while doing research, web browsing, and writing, plus around 6-7 hours of video editing. If there’s a difference, I didn’t notice it at all. Hope it helps!😬😅

Well, it depends on the level you want to go with video editing, if you’re talking about editing 4K, 6K Log or Raw footage with a lot of effects, color grading, transitions etc and you don’t want to worry about performance, I say go with MacBook Pro M4 Pro and buy a good external ssd. If you don’t know yet, I still recommend the m4 pro, that way you’ll have a machine that can handle pretty anything you throw at it.😁👌

Im not the biggest editor who edits hard raw footage. I edit simple 4K action camera footage or 1080p. But my issue lies with motion graphics, text, animations, etc... I have a base Mac Mini M2 with 16GB of ram and struggles with some of it. Would the new base M4 Mac Mini be much better with motion graphics?

Hi! I believe so! This MacBook Pro M4 it’s essentially the same as the Mac Mini M4, you should get identical results. The GPU cores are much more powerful than the M2 version👌

Great question! To fully enjoy that kind of performance, it would likely need newer technology like Thunderbolt 5, as current standards like Thunderbolt 4 might not have enough bandwidth. Some devices could handle it with a fallback to lower settings, but for the best experience, having the latest hardware will probably be necessary. Did i miss any rumours?😅

@@jakewitkowski2819 you don't, TB5 supports up to 120 GB/s and 5K 120Hz at 10 Bit color (so Studio Display with 120Hz) requires about 57 GB/s. That's half of what TB5 can provide. 5K 120 needs just 10 GB/s more than what the Pro Display XDR requires. It's not out of this world
