What I love about these are how they often change the whole feeling of the song, almost changing the meaning. This comes across so much darker and full of self loathing. No longer is it "fun" being the dirtbag - it isn't nostalgic for the feeling of being a teen with a lack of future prospects - this is a kid on the edge, not wanting to drag "her" into their darkness. The song went from a good backdrop in freaks and geeks to something more akin to We need to talk about Kevin.
