I love this guy for the silly way of remembering things. I always mix up cathode and anode. But that "Red cat says reduction happens at the cathode". Is funny and makes it so much easier to remember 😂😂

even though the anode and cathode are negative and positive respectively, it's weird that reduction happens at the cathode in both electrolytic and electrochemical? messes with my brain!! I'm guessing cations and anions are always the same charge regardless of the type of cell??

hi sir. what is the apparatus at 5:46 where the hydrogen gas is being fed into?
@farisjunaid81382 жыл бұрын
At 9:24 will those reactions in each half cell occur continuously until one of the reactants are used up? e.g. in the Zn/Zn2+ half cell the Zn is being oxidised to Zn2+ so once all Zn is used up will the current and voltage becomes 0 as no more electron flow?
@MaChemGuy2 жыл бұрын
That’s right

What do you mean by most positive half-cell is the cathode? Do you mean the half cell with the most positive electrode potential or the half cell with the most positive charge of ions? Because for example at the cathode reduction is occurring so the charges of the ions are being reduced and becoming less positive. So if most positive is talking about the charges then the statements contradict with each other, as in the half cell where reduction is occuring this cell would be the least positive and so it should be the anode and not the cathode but in fact it's the cathode because in this half cell reduction is taking place. So do you mean that the cathode is the half cell with the most positive electrode potential? Because if otherwise, I'm very confused.

Hello, I have a question/request for the channel owner, why don't you make videos solving an entire A2 paper now that exams are really close ? Edexcel preferably (?) That would be of massive help, thank you.

Positive Anode Negative is Cathode - I think it only applies to certain fuel cells? love your work Sir!
@MaChemGuy6 жыл бұрын
Graceful Cow At GCSE you study electrolysis where the electricity is supplied to the cell. In these the anode is positive and the cathode is negative. These are called electrolytic cells. These electrochemical cells at A level work the opposite way as they create an electrical current. The anode is now negative and the cathode is positive. Interestingly, reduction always takes place at the cathode (redcat). Do a search on electrolytic cells (GCSE) and electrochemical cells (A level) if you’d prefer to check. Some teachers have messaged me to say they’ve been teaching it wrong to their A level students. Hope this helps. Glad you like the videos :)

MaChemGuy Thank you so much sir! Makes so much more sense now that you have explained it! My teacher never did! Will be using Redcat A LOT now :) your videos are a life saver definitely this close to exams.

how do electrons flow through the voltmeter if it has infinite resistance? shouldn't the electrodes due to equilibrium just build up negative charge due to oxidation of the metal in water? if there's a wire (low resistance) it makes sense to me as electrons would flow from high to low charge density but then why would there be a potential difference?
