While Machine Girl's musical extremity remains admirable, the songwriting and mixing on U-Void Synthesizer fall flat.

The best way I can explain a Machine Girl album and why I love them, is they sound like a gorey, bloody, horrifying, brutal insane, action packed, First Person Shooter OST. It reminds of video games like DOOM, Wolfenstein, God of War, etc. WLFGRL, U-Synth, and Because I'm Young Arrogant sound like you can murder stuff to these albums. Like an unstoppable killing Machine Girl.

Would absolutely love if Fantano would give a proper review of any of MG's releases as its own entity rather than a sub-par take on an existing project he already likes. There are absolutely similarities between DG and ATR but its a totally different niche of music in hardcore electronic, and his ability to discern otherwise makes me think less of his opinion.

Was pretty excited to see if this was going to get a review, as I believed it was one of the more interesting albums of its genre in a bit. As an avid electronic fan--although I will be fully honest, I don't hold the same knowledge as many diehards, lol--, I was expecting, more so hoping, that it would get a bit of higher score, as I think she did a very good job of incorporating new and old styles in a way that felt experimental but still accessible and somewhat catchy in a very, very odd way! (didn't expect anything huge, though) but yeah! I can understand your points in this video. Just happy to hear more electronic in general covered on this channel. finishing up the last few minutes of the video now. cheers, melon. :)

@@SIZLL I don't think it's so much that. I have a theory that it's over-exposure and constant burnout. I'm a music reviewer as well, and even I feel this at times. Mostly I'm just ravenous for music as I'm still fairly early into my career even if I'm super dedicated to busting my ass constantly. It's very easy when you hear tens of thousands of albums a year. Chances are, he listens to more albums in a week than most of us do in a month or two. He generally will hear more of the same than us who think the newest and greatest is the best thing. Trying to downplay ATR isn't cool, but neither is dismissing every genre that's not indie rock or trap rap by comparing it to one person. This reviewer will not compare every shoegaze release to MBV (shoegaze classic) and Death Grips (random band he's a fan of). It will only happen with genres he's unfamiliar with, and honestly should not be touching on in his reviews. In his Machinedrum - Room(s) review, he literally called it dubstep and spent several minutes describing how the synths don't sound like "wub wub". His review of Porter Robinson's Worlds basically missed the point of the entire album, to the point where he didn't even realize that it's a concept album. It's embarrassing, because his reviews of genres and communities he actually is a part of are great reviews, but he needs to pander to a wider audience to stay relevant.

@Ross Orange I listen to both Machine Girl and Death Grips all the time. I don't disagree that there are comparisons to be made and that there is some inspiration there, but at that point you may as well say that Atari Teenage Riot, Nine Inch Nails, fuck, even just the entire concept of metal, industrial, rap, etc., are ripoffs of Death Grips. It's one thing to say that something is inspired, but Fantano for the past few years has tried so hard to avoid just calling Machine Girl a Death Grips rip-off because he's not a very good critic who fanboys out over Death Grips and god forbid anything that slightly reminds him of it.

Fantano clearly doesn't know what the hell he's talking about here. First of all I don't understand why he constantly compares MG to Death Grips, when it's clear they come from two completely different set of influences, and make music that sounds nothing alike. Also, that comment about how "the mix is not clean :((( sounds like mp3", like it's a bad thing, almost made me laugh out loud. The lofi aspect didn't stop Year of the Snitch from being a 9/10, did it now? YOTS literally sounds like a shitty youtube2mp3 rip, but that doesn't mean it's also bad music. Fantano knows that. I don't get it why when MG does it, it's bad.

This is a pretty decent MG album, I just think Anthony has it out for him for some reason. Compared to Ugly Art I'd say this is going for a much more rock sounding aesthetic, and yes, while certain songs sound too cloudy with a filtered lowpass or whatever, most of the production comes with the same density you get out of most of MG's work, the kind of stuff that you hear something new every listen through. MG has never been very serious about lyrics, in a way most of his songs are just a nerd orgy plugged into a distortion petal and windows 95, and I'd definitely go into this album with a "ready to hear loud noises and shit myself" mentality. Personally I like Young Arrogant and Ugly Art better, but also personally I would give this one atleast a 6, probably a 7. Give it a shot if the 5 deters you from listening.

For all the Machine Girl projects, you really had to pick this one. I checked your RYM profile a while back & saw you gave a 3.5/5 (7/10) to BIYAAHEYSF (BECAUSE IM YOUNG ARROGANT AND HATE EVERYTHING YOU STAND FOR). Instead of reviewing it favorably, you placed it in the Sept. 2017 YUNOREVIEW section because you thought the synth timbres / everything in the production sounded too much like Death Grips; which c'mon that came before 'Steroids' & that sound more falls align to Atari Teenage Riot than anything (which DG were heavily influenced by). Haven't watched the review nor listened to this record in its entirety. Just wanted to say that their record that I mentioned is great. Sure you said that it was also one-dimensional so I guess that accounts to the YUNO. Anyway, it's whatever.

Easily my favorite album so far this year. It was honestly underwhelming until I listened like four or five times because it is so dense and chaotic, but I like it just as much as any other album of theirs. That being said, they're a favorite of mine and I consider three of their five albums to be 9/10 or higher

Hello, I just listened to this album before watching this video so I could form my own opinion. I never listened to machine girl before so here’s my opinion. That shit had me acting like I just smoked crack, banging my head and rocking out at 4am. 7/10 Some parts were too noisy, could of been a little more clean, but I was pumped for most of it. I think Anthony had it perfectly with that it’s too squeezed together and isn’t that flattering. It goes hard as hell and the sound quality is 2020 but definitely needed a bit more balance. Can’t wait to see more stuff from them in the future! They got my follow and support.

I guess if a track doesn't speak to you that's it and there's nothing you can do 😄 "Scroll of Sorrow" is one of my favorites precisely because of the lyrics, it's such a unique mix of envy, rage, self-hatred, and doomerism. Super relevant and fresh, I don't think I've heard a lot of songs like it

I don’t agree with anything you said. I don’t think the album is as good as The Ugly Art, but it’s still one of their better releases. I didn’t hear anything wrong with the production and it comes across like you’re giving a pass to other artists that make similar music but are overly critical of Machine Girl. I find it strange that you said ‘Suck Shit’ was the worst song - I think it was the best. It’s such an energetic song and the guest vocals at the end come across so intense. You’re definitely giving too much flack to the lyrics - the song is just supposed to be an aggressive threat - not some sort of deep insightful think-piece.
