Dedicated this to my 14 year old son who just happened to have to be having his birthday party the day the album released. I just pulled him aside and told him to take an air pod and listen with me. I cried the whole time. We’ve been through some shit together and we’ve leaned on each other when we had no one so it’s literally impossible for me as a parent to hear this and not cry. I have to skip it if I don’t want to ugly cry on the spot in front of people lol.

@@randomahhbeats146 Yeahhhh, I have a son. He’s 14. I had him when I was 19 years old. When I was barely 18 years old I met this guy who was 23, and I thought I knew it all, I thought I had met the “man of my dreams” (oh how I was wrong) so when he asked me to marry him after 6 months, I stupidly said yes... and then I got pregnant, and dropped out of Cosmetology school (because my “husband”convinced me into thinking he’d actually provide for us and that I could stay home for a few years and go back to school when our son got older... spoiler alert: he lied.) Our marriage ended when my son was only 8 months old. I had to move back home and work my ass off to support my baby. Meanwhile, “dad” was busy doing drugs, then getting arrested, then cleaning up for a little while... wash, and repeat. “Dad” didn’t really want anything to do with my son until he was about 4 or 5 years old. “Dad” just completely ducked out on that whole first section of my kids life because it involved “dad” having to change diapers, feed him, put him to sleep, etc. He came around some when my son was old enough to do some basic things for himself, but then I found out that “dad” was usually always passed out from doing drugs or sick from not doing them, so he could barely take care of himself, let alone a small child... He was around for maybe 7 years off and on, mostly off. Obviously I’m not allowing my son to go and stay the night with his “dad” who’s been using drugs, plus, when “dad” was on drugs he’d usually just disappear for months anyways so I didn’t have to even worry about that very much. But I never asked “dad” for a dime. I didn’t take him to court for child support, I never wanted his money, not that he even had any... and I never denied “dad” from seeing my son when he was sober. I just wanted my son to have his “dad” in his life, even just a little. I think that it’s important for kids to have both parents around if it’s possible... I dealt with it the best I knew how to. But now “dad” is in jail again, for the 5th time this year. He’s currently awaiting a grand jury trial for a felony grand theft auto + several misdemeanors. He’ll probably go to prison once he’s sentenced. My son has only heard from his “dad” one time in over 2 years now... “Dad” was actually arrested this last time just 2 days before my son’s 14th birthday... of course, my son hoped of getting a phone call from him, but when he didn’t, we weren’t surprised... and then I looked “dad” up (I look him up every so often because I worry if he’s on the streets, in jail, or dead... it’s not fun) and I found out that he was back in custody. So yeah, for us, the lyrics in this song are very accurate even coming from a different viewpoint and background... when I heard the song the first time I couldn’t hardly listen to it because it had me so choked up. I had been trying to find the words to tell my kid that his “dad” was back in jail, which is probably why he didn’t get a call on his birthday (even though we both knew he most likely wouldn’t have called anyway). And I sat there on his bed, the day of his 14th birthday (Sept 22nd), and told him I was so sorry. I told him that I wasn’t going to lie to him and tell him everything is always going to be okay, and that 14 years ago I didn’t know that things were going to end up this way. I laid there at the hospital holding him the day he was born and I promised him this amazing and beautiful life, but I know it’s not been everything I promised it would be. I told him I wish I could take the pain away for him, and that I wish I could shelter him from these disappointments and the harsh realities of the world. And what really gets me is after I told my son how sorry I am for failing him by not being able to keep those promises I made him the day he was born, he not only reassures me and is understanding, but he’s grateful and appreciative... thanking me for everything I have done for him... I’m a very proud mom of an amazing son who is already one hell of a strong young man at 14 years old. So I guess when you add the lyrics of this song MGK wrote for his daughter + the rocky relationship MGK had with his own dad... you equal = me ugly crying at my kids party on Sept 25th after the album is released and then me dedicating this song to the most awesome young man I know. Hopefully my life story clarified your question 😉
