LYRICS:
Machine Hearts Gavin Dunne 2018
Machine Hearts
We never saw
Two fates intertwined
Sorrow in the memories
Rooted, realigned
No cold comfort here for me
A meaning
A feeling
Reason to be
A sickness
In all the secrecy
Every cycle
Same old ending
Give all that I have
And if I don’t have a heart
Then what is broken?
Bonds of time they come apart
We’ve been awoken at the end
And if I don’t have a heart
Then why keep hoping?
We were blinded from the start
Forever frozen my friend
Flowers wilt and fade
Wither into weary walls
Glint of dancing blades
Cry for mercy at the fall
A taste of
Emotion
Forbidden seed
The sting of
The flavour bittersweet
It always ends the same way
And if I don’t have a heart
Then what is broken?
Bonds of time they come apart
We’ve been awoken at the end
And if I don’t have a heart
Then why keep hoping?
We were blinded from the start
Forever frozen my friend
Machine Hearts
We never saw
Can you exist without a reason to?
Can you live without a cause?
Back to the end
Forever starting over
Fractured again
To die another time
Back to the end
A slowing of the motors
Damaged by design
A meaning
A feeling
Reason to be
A longing
For a finality
And if I don’t have a heart
Then what is broken?
Bonds of time they come apart
We’ve been awoken at the end
And if I don’t have a heart
Then why keep hoping?
We were blinded from the start
Forever frozen my friend
And we keep hoping
Forever frozen my friend

Really loved this song! I love how you even incorporated some of the odd chanting Keiichi Okabe loves to put in his tracks. And I'm glad to hear you enjoyed Nier after giving it another go. Normally I say first impressions matter a lot with games, but there's just so much to Nier that kind of blows normal gaming conventions out of the water. Though I'm curious. Did you finish the story, or did you "finish" the story if you know what I mean. I find that most people are surprised that there is still a lot more content past the first few "playthroughs."

@@janstastny5937 I had to use the FAR mod since the game refused to Start in fullscreen, not to mention the completely wrong resolution. And even then the framerate in cutscenes often dropped from about 60 to less than 20. The Keyboard & Mouse control also is janky af, you can feel they just used remapping to convert Mouse movement into virtual Joystick movement (especially since there's a max. speed). Sure, it somehow works, but it's definitely one of the worst PC ports I ever saw. And the fact they never patched it (The FAR mod still is kinda necessary) makes it even worse. So, Yeah... absolutely excellent Story & Gameplay from Yoko Taro, but incredibly awful PC Port work from Platinum / Square Enix.

Holy crap. Way to start 2018 strong; this is a masterpiece of a song. The lyrics have a poetry to them, telling the story of the game without giving anything away to someone who hasn't played it but desperately wants to (someone like me), but they also combine in a way that has such a wonderful sound through the combination of syllables. Excellent melody, and just... just such a good sound to it all. It reminds me of the introspective beauty drawing inspiration from technology that we saw in the visuals of Blade Runner 2049 last year, except in audio form. This is outstanding :)

Maybe I'm projecting here but the structure and instrumentals of the song perfectly complement the lyrics and overall theme; starting with a beginning and middle composed of almost somber cycles, ending with an almost defiant duet that leaves you with the shred of hope that the characters remember this time around and move on.

Almost 2 years after this song was released, I'm here again to listen to it again. And I just want to say: Thank you for this masterpiece Gavin. Storytime: I really first listened to the song at the end of 2018. I haven't played or even watched a video about Nier: Automata (yet) but the song really stuck with me and my girlfriend. A few weeks later with a lot of different problems, were only a few came from our relationship, she decided to leave me because everything was too much. I played the song a lot after that because I was asking myself too if I had a heart after all. It really helped to ease the pain. Only a few days later, we met again. She said I was right about her just escaping from the relationship because it was the easiest thing to do to reduce her problems. It changed or relationship for the better. Some time after that, in 2019, I took the chance and bought Nier: Automata in a steam sale to see what the fuzz was all about. And so far, most of the games I bought because Gavin made a great song about it, it was totally worth the money. So I was playing through Nier: Automata, my now-fiancée watching me play, enjoying the story together. Again and again we listened to the song and the more we knew the story, the more we understood the depth of the song and the true meaning of those words. Nier: Automata changed me (to a degree) and without you Gavin, I doubt I'd ever gave the game a shot. It changed me for the better, at least I think so. It was a unique experience and we both liked the game so much, we took a bit of it into our life. Our son, who is born in a few weeks, gets Emil as his middle name. All of those wonderful things thanks to you Gavin. This wasn't the first time your music helped me through hard times and I bet it won't be the last. A simple thank you is barely enough to describe what you mean to me, and many others as well. I love your art, your work is wonderful and I am grateful to be alive right now to listen to the amazing sounds you're enlighten the world with. Thank you.

I've never played this game but this song is amazing. it tells an amazing tale of not being human and stuck in a unhappy cycle. but can be related to real life with how our world is with Mental Health issues rising and everything going on and how Humanity is doomed to repeat our mistakes. its a song but the sorrow of humanity and our mistakes, not learning from our past. TLDR: beautiful song
@Aoenias
@Aoenias 11 ай бұрын
It's poetic in that the robots wish to be alive, to be human, and they are trapped in an endless cycle of conflict and suffering and have yet to realize that this is itself what it means to be human. That they are already human. And the only ones to realize this, they knew it would drive them all mad, so they fabricated this cyclical lie under the guise of service to a Humanity that no longer exists.

Wow... just wow...chills and tears, what can I say. The music hits that same tone of the game and the lyrics are the first thing since completing the game that hit so hard as the game itself... "If I don't have a heart, then what is broken?" breaks me every time, in good part because Sharm's vocals fit the song so well, and your voices go along so well as always :) What a start to 2018 :)

I know this one has been up for months but it's one of the handful I keep playing over and over again. I also end up linking this one to my D&D friends a lot because of the meaning behind it. This one and "The Natural Heart" are two of my favorites for pointing out "humanity". I'm really glad you do all of these original songs for games, especially when your songs echo the meaning the game was trying to convey. You probably get all this a lot, but thanks all the same. :)

The lyrics fit the game so well :o SPOILERS: I teared up everytime you put 2B's death scene on screen D: That part got to me real hard when I played the game... Her death was meaningless... Just like everything else in this game, there is no meaning, no purpose in that world... What carries meaning is what you do with the experience you had with the game... Masterpiece from beginning to end.

I have the same, but I started nier series by song of the ancients cover by Lizz Roberts. If you want to try it below is what you can expect from it okay,if you don't have ps3 then watch nier gestalt on yt(materwelonz did really good one) because in mine personal opinion is better and automata contains spoilers to it,few but not that great you don't have to play gestalt to udnerstand automata. Let's start talking about game: 1 Yoko Taro loves to put philosophical topics as main theme(Gestalt was heavy on "what is good or evil" while automata goes full existentialism),and it's main reason why I even started reccomending it 2 Plot: in Gestalt is better,at least I think that, but in Automata is really good, especially after yuou see full picture and start thinking abou it as whole. 3 gameplay: Yoko has strange love to mix as many genres as possible(slasher, sideslasher, bullethell, etc) but gameplay is much better than one from Gestalt 4 Soundtrack by Keichi Okabe and support of Emi Evans:Keichi Okabe is great at composing music,Emi Evans isn't only one singing here but is main attraction. Especially her chaos language(mix of 5-6 modern languages made to sound, absolutely no meaning at all) 6 It may be repetetive, but it compensates with everything else 7 Yoko Taro has great love for playing with perspectives(not only in game mechanic but also in plot itself) conclusion:It would be great if you begin with Gestalt(playing or watching lets play) but you don't have to. Game itself isn't for everyone, but there is a chance that you will fall in love before you even notice it

Given this game won the award for best soundtrack of 2017, I was worried for this as it would have a lot to live up to, but a strong, tight focus on the main characters with some damn good lyrics meant you kept close to the core of the game's story and feel. Well done Gav and thanks for the amazing work you do.

Everyone saying their favorite lines, I'll throw mine out. "The sting of the flavor, bittersweet." That line shows so much understanding about Automata's story. Automata isn't another "robots be people too" story, it's a story about people trying to live in a really fucked up world. Yes, androids feel emotions, but is that a good thing? Life sucks. It's full of hardship and pain. Why live in a world like that? What's the reason for living if life is just a series of suffering and disappointment? That's what Nier's story is about. It's a story about people and nihilism thinly disguised as a story about machines.
